View Full Version : Fellow HAMB'er killed in his Henry J....(updated p.7)
McGrath

Tommy McCray (Yellow Henry J) called me a while ago and told me that Jerry Branson(Joplin) was killed in his Henry J(the Blue one at the HAMB Drags last year).
Apparently he had some car trouble, pulled over to the side of the Highway and was hit from behind by an 18 wheeler. From what I understand, he was killed instantly. I never met him, but from what I have heard he was a helluva nice guy.
Tommy also mentioned that Jerrys wife found out when the Funeral Parlor called and asked her what she wanted to do with the Body. Wouldn't that be a hell of a way to find out about your husbands death?

My sympathies to anyone who knew or loved him.
It's been a bittersweet week. We had a son born, then found out my best friends grandpa died. Then one of my aunts.
Is there a fund for the family or anything? Or any way 5000 people can help?

"Is there a fund for the family or anything? Or any way 5000 people can help?"
I didn't know him, but I am pretty sure WZJunk and some of the other Missouri HAMB'ers knew him. Hopefully one of them can give us a little more information.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jerry and his friends. He helped us out greatly at the Drags last year. He made a couple trips in that little HenryJ to haul extra wood for our pig. He was a willing helper even though he had just heard of the HAMB through WZJunk and others. His presence will be deeply missed this August.

I'm not sure how this sounds...and I hope this is received well, but would you all be interested in us doing like a 2 day auction and donate the money to purchase arrangements for the service from all of us?
We would also do a longer one to help with expenses?
Ryan? Say so and it will be....
I think that is a good idea Ace. I do think the HAMB needs to send something.
Can someone post the funeral info when they hear about it? We need to send off a HAMBer with the proper respects.

Exactly Reynolds, the media and war have definately watered down the meaning of death, i believe Joseph Stalin said it best, "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of one million is a statistic." people theese days view death as a statistic, and not as the loss of a human life. My deepest condolences to his family.

Well, shit. Condolences to the family. I've got a friend who was lucky. He stopped to help someone and got caught between the 2 cars when a third car ass ended his. They were way off the road too. Dumb bastard 1/2 asleep thought he was following those tail lights. Realized they weren't moving too late. Luckily my buddy lived but his legs aren't the same. I think the auction is a good idea too but I'd suggest a raffle. That way all the money goes to the family, not just the winning bid.

A group of us HAMBers have just had a wonderful day working on Denise's Big Olds. It could not have turned out any better. It was one of those events that will live with all who were there as a fond memory.
I come in the house, exhausted from a hard day of play and work and the first thread I click on is this one. Going from a great high to this is very sobering. It makes you understand how fragile life is. My prayers go out to the family, may they be comforted in this very sad time.

Unlike most people in Kentucky I come from a small family. I don't have dozens of cousins or a multitude of aunts and uncles. But I consider each and every person here family. I've met many people from the HAMB and there's even more I haven't met yet. I still love each one like a brother or sister. To know that one has been taken from us is a disheartening thing. I feel so bad for the family and know too well the pain they suffer. May God bless them in the days to come and give them strength while they mourn their loss.
I think the raffle or a fund might be better then an auction..
..or maybe multiple auctions..

I just talked to Tommy again and he got a little more information.Jerry was pulling a Willys behind his Henry J, on his way to a Swap meet in Boliver,MO.
The accident is still being investigated, but right now it looks like Jerry lost a spindle on the Trailer. Tommy hadn't yet heard if the truck hit him while he was trying to get off the road, or if he was already off the road.
Kind of Ironic, the property where he was knocked off the road is owned by an outfit called "Hillbilly Heaven Hot Rods".

From the Joplin Globe 4/4/04:
From staff reports
Joplin man killed in accident on I-44
A Joplin man was killed in a two-vehicle accident Friday on Interstate 44 east of Mount Vernon, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.
Jerry W. Branson, 54, 30527 Fox Run Lane, one of the drivers, was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City.
Mike E. Ogden, 50, of Springfield, Ohio, was the other driver.
The eastbound Branson car was struck from behind by the Ogden tractor-trailer, the patrol said. After the impact, the Branson car ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned. Branson was thrown out of his car in the accident, which occurred at 6:10 p.m.

Been thinking about this. The idea of the raffle or auction is a good one, but should someone take the initiative to send an arrangement or something for the services? I'd be glad to contribute if we could get something going there. That and maybe someone that is close could print this thread out and give it to the family, just to let them know that they are in our thoughts and prayers....

Jerry's family is in our prayers this day.
Any news on the funeral?
Maybe we could get some HAMB representation to send off a brother?

As far as a sending some flowers or holding a fund raiser, whatever... I'm all for it. Is there appropriate protocol for this kind of thing?

Wow, terrible news and an awful story to hear. I remember him from the drags and the fun he was having.
My sympathies and prayers for the family.
A HAMB flower arrangement at the funeral is a great idea. No matter how it is set up, I'll participate or contribute.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif my prayers go out to his family...
sending flowers etc is a great idea... let me know where to send my donation...
Henry J's rule... i've loved them since I built my first model of one at age 12. It was even cooler to see em going down the strip at the drags... I cant believe that happened.

Ohh how awful...
I just got back from the NSRA show Ryan mentioned above and the first thing I do after waking up is get on the HAMB. I recall seeing something about a crash on the news while we were down there. It was just a flash and I THOUGHT it involved a Hot-Rod but it's hard to recall as I wasn't really paying attention enough. I am sorry to say it but WZJUNK will probably hear it here first.....that sucks.
I can't imagine the pain. I am truely, deeply sorry for them...

Remember him and the car from the drags last summer. Was very impressed he drove his drag car to the strip. That thing ran strong for a street car.
He will be missed by many....
Godspeed!

Looks like I was wrong on two accounts. WZJUNK heard the news before this post and the accident I heard about did involve a Hot-Rod, but not a HAMB owned Hot-Rod and it wasn't fatal either....(that good news I guess).

Jerry used to live up this way (Columbia-Jeff.city area), he has ALOT of hot rod buddy`s and family up here.
We tried to get ahold of someone yesterday but everyone was already gone toward Joplin.
I`m going to make a call to information and see if I can atleast find a place to send a donation. I`ll let you guy`s know if I findout anything.

Is anyone local?
Or know his family?
Maybe he belonged to a local car club?

Some people request,in lieu of flowers,a donation be made to a specific charity.
This would frequently be included in an Obituary.
Thanks a ton assdragger. I'd really like us to send something or help his wife in some way.
yes, thanks Assdragger,
please post the info on the funeral, I would like to send flowers..
it would be awsome if we all did.

Sean, do you know where Jerry's accident occurred? I left Rolla at 4:00PM on Friday evening headed West on I-44 to the Southwest Nats at OK City. About 1/2 mile East of Mt. Vernon, Mo. there was a terrible accident in the eastbound lane. I told brother one of the vehicles looked like it might have been a rod or older car, it was over the embankment and I couldn't tell for sure. Just wondering!!! I visited with Jerry quite awhile at the HAMB Drags last year. He was a good guy and will be missed. Sam

OK fella`s, here`s what I was just told...
Jerry`s funeral is at 11:00am, burial at 3pm on Wednesday in Toronto Kansas. Dont know where...?
He`s at Thornhill Dillon Mortuary in Joplin, Phone number is: 417-623-4567
Contributions can be made in his name to:
Cheif CrazyHorse Monument
Custer,South Dakota
I think the monument thing is a well deserved and cool idea.
Who knows, if we got enough money together, maybe they would put a plaque somewhere in Jerry`s name as a large contributer!
Flowers are also good....lets get something together, I`m in!

That may have been it. Tommy told me the mile marker, but I forgot it by the time I updated the post. Tommy was told that Jerry's wreck happened right in front of a Shop called "Hillbilly Heaven Hot Rods", or "Hot Rod Heaven", something like that....
Whoever Tommy got his information from said that Jerry's family was in pretty good shape as far as Money goes, but said that Jerry was Diabetic and suggested that donations could also be made to the American Diabetes Association in Jerrys name.
Ok,
Since I didn't hear anyone else speak up, I just ordered a flower arrangement from All Seasons Florists (owned by Randy Sahasky, a friend of Jerry's). I probably spelled Randy's last name wrong.
The card will read "From your friends on the H.A.M.B."
I paid $106.83 for it and put it on my Visa. A hundred bucks should send something pretty nice.
If anyone out there wants to send me a buck in the mail to go towards paying for this send it to:
Mike Atchley
1595 County Road 256
Columbia, Missouri 65201-1711
And if no one sends me a cent I'll survive. It's the thought that counts. I hope this didn't step on anyone's toes. Sorry if it did.
If I collect more than the flowers cost I'll either send the rest to Ryan or Jerry's family/charity, whichever y'all want.

Sean, that's exactly where I saw the accident. It was a dusk and hard to see. There were ambulances and fire trucks driving in the median to get around traffic. I didn't stop. Guess there wasn't anything I could have done anyway. Atch, thanks for taking care of the flowers. Sam

Very nice, Atch. I'll send a couple of bucks out, tomorrow, to you. The offer still stands for a raffle/auction piece. I'm gonna go out in the shop tonight and see about getting something going for it. This kind of thing always reminds me of a really close friend I lost almost 4 years ago, due to a bike accident. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Sad news indeed. Although I never met Jerry, I feel he's a brother to us all. RIP
I'll drop a check in tomorrow's mail.
Thanks for picking up the ball.
turns out i do indeed have a paypal account. i guess that's from when i used paypal to pay for the hokey assed cookbook.
i don't know how to use it or how the money gets to me, but snapper figured it out that i do have one.
i guess it's under willie.atchley@med.va.gov, so if anyone is inclined to donate here's a way with paypal. and if anyone has already sent to fat cat's paypal account i'm sure he will forward it along, too.
can someone out there send me a pm telling me how paypal works for the recipient?
Here's their web page. You have to log in - if you've forgotten your login info they'll help you.

Frank, maybe you can check your records and see if he ordered one of your HAMB drags videos last year. If not, maybe you could send the family a video of that great day. If I remember correctly you got him racing quite a few times.

I too am taken aback by such happenings. I wish his family the best. Such things like this always make me think about our own mortality, LIVE and LOVE like this is your last day on Earth. I didn't know Joplin, but I am very saddened by this. With each opportunity that I get to meet someone new, I am happy I got that opportunity to be a part of their life travels. I regret I didn't have that opportunity with Jerry.
My most sincere regards to all who knew and loved him,

Just wanted to let you guys know in case you missed it, we're having a raffle in Joplin's honor, which is pinned at the top of page 1. There's some great stuff being raffled off, from Barnett, Brush, magazines, pictures....TONS of great things. ALL of the money raised will go to the Crazy Horse monument that is being built in SD, which is where his family wanted contributions made. It's such a great cause!
