Those are not kids, they are HotRod hodlums having thier focus redirected...
Actually I have been teaching a Hot Rod class to "troubled" kids. We are building a 29 RPU but sorta ran out of things to do this week. So I showed them what wet sanding (great fun) is like. My 48 needs a freshening up for spring so I let them sand it for me. The truck had black DP90 over purple primer. I basically just wanted to get the black off. They got most of it done. Now I'll have to finish it up.

You are a good guy.. Donating your time to the kids is a wonderful thing..... but Nike wants the kids back to work right away.
maybe you will keep a few out of trouble.

Good idea! I was thinking about repainting the van, but I'm dreading those big painted surfaces! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Seriously...it's a good thing you're doing. Lots of Good Karma Points coming you're way.
These kids are great!! You would never guess that half of them were ever in trouble. They make me feel like a star when I'm working with them. The class was started by Jerry Duncan in York. It meets for about 4 hours on Fridays. He needed someone to show them how to do rust repair and a little more. Now I'm hooked and in for the long haul. It was hard at first letting go and not making things perfect. But the kids fight over who gets to work on the car. Some of them are naturals and picked it up right away. It got to the point I could draw some lines on the car and they would take it from there.
We are going to try to finish the RPU for York. Hopefully it will give the kids a sense on acomplishment. I will have to bring it home and clean a few things up before it goes together.

I'm very impressed. I think that's a great thing your doing. Not only getting them on the path to a better life, but intraducing them to a great hobby.
Kudos to you!!
My mom works in the educational department of a prison, so I understand how hard it can be to turn some people around from that kind of life.

good work
I have this one cousin that is a baby factory. She's got these two twins, only they don't look nothin alike, and this older boy who's a asshole in training. She's a real piece of work, and takes her shit out on her kids, so they're gonna be good and screwed up in the head as they get older. She don't teach them nothin, just yells at them.
Anyhow... one time they came out to my parent's house (she wanted to borrow some money I figure), and I was down in the side yard checking out the bottom end of a Caddy 500 I just had gotten. They're down there, messing with crap, won't leave anything alone. So I shove a screw driver in each of the twin's hands, and show them how to scrape crap off the motor. They were only 5yrs old and could barely speak, but they understood that much. The older one, about 8, I showed how to break bolts loose.. how to understand leverage, how to use your weight against things to make them work for you.
After a few minutes of this, they didn't want to leave. They loved it. First bit of real work I think they ever saw, or knew. I think that's what boys need... something to do with their hands, something to focus on so all the extra bullshit in their lives just kinda falls to the side.
So, I think anything done to help kids focus and learn real, usable skills is damn near the work of god...

I think I'm going to go out and get into trouble just so I can come down and help http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. In all seriousness that is pretty damn cool of you. Any of those kids could be the next Cole Foster,Jimmy Shine, or any of the cool builders here on this board. later plmczy

that is an awesome gesture that you are doing. If you can save one kid from turning to crime and ending up in jail it was all worth it. I think i need to talk to some of the guys in our club and hit the local high schools to see how we can volunteer some time. We were all young punk shit heads at one time. For some of us that was a loooooong time ago. And who said we are a "heart-less"bunch http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Excellent work!
A lot of schools have cut there Tech Ed / Industrial arts programs so the kids that don't fit into the standard system get left out and fall into trouble. I wish more people would get this involved.
Heck......I need to find out when the next schoolboard meeting is.
Keep at it,
Stevie G
Thanks guys!!
These kids aren't in High School. They're in a court appointed program. Most have been in serious trouble, but to know the kids you wouldn't think half of them would hurt a fly. They are just a product of their envirement. A couple of them may be trouble makers but the majority are just great kids.
Yes the good karma has been with me. Twice now after I left them I have run out of gas (broken gas gauge) on the way home. Both times the truck spit and sputtered right in front of a gas station. No walking, just pull in and fill up.

I helped out a kid for a rew years. I think it worked? His parents said it realy helped. I have moved to Texas just in the past 7 months and things started going down hill for him. We talk on the phone and his parents give me up dates all the time. The kid just turned 18 and wants to bail. I'm trying to get him out here for school.
He's got it bad, 24 T, 56 F100, 60 Dodge, I guess I might have screwed him up in that respect. Wish me luck.

You "RULE" Clark http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I think that karma thing is working. I went hunting a running small block chevy for their project and started running into a couple of great buys. First I found the kids a 283 with a powerglide. Both work for $100. The guy with the 283 has a few things I may want. Then at the local speed shop I saw an add for a guy selling a NOS Offy 4x2 intake for an SBC. After callin the guy he said he wants $150 for it. Needless to say the guy was even nice enough to drop it off.
The real payoff is the kids. I feal like a million bucks after spending the afternoon with them.
