so...my '62 poncho wagon aint chargin the battery...i replaced the regulater with a new one...the brushes in my generater look really good...i cleaned all the wire connecters real good..replaced the belt with a goodyear gaterback and it fits good on ther pullys..cleaned all the pullys real good....i tried to polerize the regulater but i only sparked once..not like the old regulater..so does anyone have any ideas..'cause i have no clue... if the car is running and i take off a battery cable, the car should keep running if it was charging shouldn't it?..or is that a myth???... school me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It works that way on an alternator- I would guess that would be the case on your generator car also....it should run when disconnected if charging.

Yea man, pull a battery cable once it's running. If it dies then your gen. is shot. It should work like an alt. All your battery does is crank it, your alt./gen. keeps it running.....good luck! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Did you disassemble the generator and physically check the brushes or just look at them? Why did you replace the regulator in the first place? Was it bad?
I would opt to take the generator apart, put new brushes in(they aren't expensive)make sure the grooves between the segments of the commutator are cleaned out(a broken hacksaw blade is about the right size for the job)being careful not to scratch the surfaces of the commutator. If the end bearings aren't sealed, lubricate them with a light coating of wheel bearing grease.Re-assemble and re-install.Repolarize the regulator.

I think Ray is steering you in the right direction. Replace the brushes and make sure that belt is really tightened.

Its not the Regulator that should be polarized, Its the field in the generator. Trying to polarize only the Regulator may break it i guess.

Take a look here under electrical system. Maybe you can find som usefull info.

Found this also on Google.

This one seams good to

I know its Tractor and Volkswagen pages but a genarator does not know what its mounted on :-)

so the drama continues...i replaced the regulater with a brand new one..polerized it,,still nothing.i have four other regulaters that were givin' to me and tried them as well,,so i took in my generater and had it tested.it apperently it is fine.but it still isnt charging..is there anything else i can do..i polerized both the generater/regulater..checked all the wires..let it run, reved it up, and take off the battery cable while its running and it stalls!!!what the hell can it be...anyone??? i was wondering ,how does the battery get charged from the regulater.it may be a dumb question but im fucking lost ...does the generater send power to the regulater, which charges the battery,,,but how does the battery get the charge????

Checking through old post as my dads 52 Ford is doing the same thing. Any other ideas? Car stalls when disconecting battery and generator appears to be fine. Gonna have it checked out for sure, but he put another generater on in the meantime and had the same results. Regulater has been changed out with a supposed good one as well.

Just an idea. Ain't there a fusable link somewhere in the wiring harness? Anyway, sounds like a possible wiring problem to me.

look at the ammeter, or if it doesn't have one get a volt meter and see what the voltage is on the battery when it is idling and when you rev it up. Some setups discharge at idle, so if you pull off the battery cable the engine will die.

No fusible links until the mid 60s or so....as far as I know....

WOW.. this is a blast from the past...i ended up yanking out the generater and put in a one wire alt'..and the car now lives in Santa Rosa,California..
