View Full Version : 32 C dan, to chop or not to chop?

I'm looking for opinions on chopping or not chopping my 32 two door sedan. I know it is probably personal preference but this car is going to be my daily ride and I have kids that will be riding in the back regularly. I love the sinister look of a chopped sedan but want to know how much this will effect the drivability of it since it will be driven everyday. I'm leaning towards chopping it 3 1/2 inches but I need to make a final decision soon. Thanx in advance for your input.

Well my vote is not to chop, and I noticed your kinda a east coast area. So give it a bit of a channel. Once you chop it , boy it's a bitch to get it back to orignal. Channel is easy to put back on its rails. It's your car now, but a hundred years from now?? If you do go with a chop I say 2". Yea I love the C-dans, so much I want to trade my phaeton for one, makes a great family car!! LOve to see a picture of it.
thanks continental

This may sound rediculous to some people but a chopped car might make you drive more safely - you'd have to be more aware of your surroundings.
Kids are short, chop it a lot.
If you channel it, don't chop. If you chop it don't channel.
If you channel it channel it just to the bottom of the frame.
Personally, I like 32s chopped and not channelled because the frame looks so good in itself. Channels are for Model As and, well, everything EXCEPT the 32!
If you chop it, 3-1/2" isn't enough, go a full 9 centimeters! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
deuce,
before you start hackin' on your car i suggest you find one of the pix of traileredcarsuck's 32 c-dan. i know it's been on here before, but don't know where to look. maybe pm him and ask him to e-mail you a pic. fenderless and unchopped. excellent choice imho. i believe his has a slight channel, but can't remember for sure.

No doubt about it....whack it! and remember "too much is just enough".
CHOP IT! It's a hot rod right? You don't have any plans of restoring it do you? Then there isn't even any question if you should the question should be when ...

If yer gonna drive it a LOT---- 2 inch chop---just enough to give it "the look" and won't make a damn bit O' difference in driveability..........

Thanx for all the input. That last picture of that hiboy sedan from Dirk gave me some evenin wood. The one of the one unchopped with the fenders is too cool also but the hiboy does it. If anyone has any more pics of chopped or unchopped hiboys from different angles it would be appreciated.

all looks good, i think whichever way you want to go is the right way.... friend of mine said, he is building the sedan for himself, not the kids. if they want to fit in one, they can build one up themselves http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I agree that a chopped sedan looks good...but I won't chop it 'cause "it's the thing to do". Chop it if YOU want it chopped. I'm getting to where it's kinda cool NOT to do what everyone expects. If you don't, then everyone will ask when you're going to. If you do, they have nothing to talk about. If you're going high boy, I say channel it.

I am in the same position with my '32 Sedan. I'm going to run it fenderless, and will probably chop it in the end, but I've seen a couple of nice unchopped fenderless sedans as well. My current plan is to get it on the road first, then decide.
I have a heap of photos of '32 Sedans that I have collected from the internet. If you want, I can zip them up and email them to you.

....my vote is for a mild chop if running fenderless......stock height looks best with fenders. 2" is pretty and 4" is wicked.......Steve

Go for the "wicked" look. At least 4 inches. I've been looking at lots of pics of Tudor sedans to get ideas for mine, and a healthy chop gives it the look I want.

I have a Tudor body that is cut 3". It always thought it made the car look too long to me. I also have a sedan delivery that is cut 2", it looks good on the delivery, but not enough for a tudor sedan. A friend of mine cut his 2 1/2 and I thought it looked about perfect. I always thought the more radical the chop, the more extreme the car has to be dumped in front. If you are going to have it cut resist the temptation to "get your moneys worth" by cutting it too much. If you are doing it yourself it doesn't matter.

BTW--I saw your(deuceV8)roadster at k-ville last may,love it
is the sedan going to favor it,black primer-cream wheels, white walls?

Hey Stu thanx for the commments. I'm thinking the sedan is gonna be a flat green (brush applied) and I'm thinking of using some signage on the door. My grandfather has been dead about 30 years but I wanted to up his name on there and say used cars as he sold cars when he was alive, and sand it down and give it a weathered old look. It will have steelies but probably red this time with some wide whites.
man everybody knows when you do a radical chop on a tudor all ya gota do to make it look right is take 4 more inches-length wise- out of that back window;)

Well i love sedans not that we see many over here, plastic roadsters and coupes and lots of pops(anglias).I love pops too it is getting more common over here to channel and leave the roof on pops they look so good. Now thats the way i would go stay full height with the roof and channel it with a zed in each end of the chassis, make her real low they look so good.If you don't like it then chop it you still have the choice and if you want just take the zeds out of the chassis but a chop is almost irriversible although i have seen someone reverse a chop and it looked ok............Mad Marq

Having not seen your car, the answer could go either way. But a 2 1/2" chop is drivable......

Is it true the car's named regret because they took the 389 out and dropped in that small block? A very cool car, nonetheless, I took a bunch of pics of it at K-zoo.

chop the fucker...this one is 7 1/2 i think
Rainer that plymouth is a beut absolutly spot on .The moment i saw it i thought what a beautiful car it is exactly right.I also have to say another car i think is right is Rod riguez although not everyones cup of tea it looks right.Personally do it your way but if your not sure about the roof run the car with a full top and do it later so you won't regret it.As for the car at the bottom of the page my personal view is that it is way over the top, just a personal view mind some people like em like that but i think it is probably less practical with a heavy chop and channell. My truck is going to be channelled 5 inches and zedded 5 inches back and front but i'm keeping the full roof for now,you never know i may chop it at a later date if it don't look right.I will however still have the choice to chop or not to chop. Also the decision may be made by where you live in the states, most sunny state cars seem to be heavily chopped but eastcoast cars are mainly heavily channelled and zedded this may in part be due to the weather. As we have weather over here in blighty like the east coast i'm going east coast style with my truck you on the other hand may want to go with popularity and chop it but if you do chop it make the back higher and rake the screen back too more work but looks better...........MAD MARQ

That red one is very nice!
I just sent you an email with a few other unchopped sedans. Having looked at a few of them now, I think the most important factor in making them look good unchopped is to have fairly tall tyres on the rear.

If it's not quite low enough and not chopped it will look kind of dorky. Just my opinion.

Donzie or Hatch or fuelpump might have a pic of mine its chopped a little over 2 1/4". The reason being it was built out of a severely damaged car and a doner top. It just ended up at that height after we saved everyting we could. I was shooting for 2", which I think is a perfect chop for a '32 2dr. with fenders.

I love the look of the stock tudor just above that chickenridgerods post. Its dripping patina!
So hows the lower subrails and floors of the proposed tudor? If you want to get low and save the floors you could always take a little off the top and a little out of the middle. This one has a 4 inch chop and a 6 inch section. Just one more variation to consider.
I don't think I have ever seen a deuce tudor that did not look good. Go extreme or nothing at all and they still look cool. Steve
