View Full Version : Cochran Coupe gets a motor...

Ryan
04-01-2004, 10:41 AM
Came to work this morning and had a picture of my motor waiting for me. We went back and forth on heads, induction, etc... Originally, we were going to run an Edelbrock 4 deuce intake (runnin on 2 carbs), but then keith found those great block letter heads and decided to run a matching block letter super intake. I am really excited...

Ryan great looking engine. I love the heads. Jealousy intended. What coupe is that going in?? Not the 38 is it?
Maybe mommys chevy? That would be cool for a change http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yeah, tell us more about "the Cochran Coupe".I musta missed sumpin.

Ryan

No, she's going in the model-a that Keith has been building me. It's pretty much my dream car - late 40s bonneville inspired hot rod. The car has changed direction a bit as we are now thinking of putting it on deuce rails. I'm too tall for the chop and channel...

That's a really cool way of Z-ing the front. It definately would be a characteristic that would stand out as your car.

Have you thought about putting another Z at the firewall so that you could increase your leg room, but still give it that massively channeled look?

Petejoe
04-01-2004, 11:16 AM
Great looking 30. That flathead will look fabulous in that car!
Speaking of flathead intakes. I noticed the 33 on that website had an intake I have never seen. Anyone know anything about it???

Ryan
04-01-2004, 11:17 AM
Yeah, short of getting my legs cut off at the knee it just ain't happening (I'm 6'3") on that frame with that channel. And you'll see some really far out things once it is on deuce rails though... the car will still be very low and racy...

Ryan
04-01-2004, 11:19 AM
That's Flip's old car and that's not just any intake... It's blown.

Frustrating isn't it? ( Im 6'2" )
I already had my roadster on wheels, on a channeled and Z'd Model A frame.
And when I got my seats back from being upholstered, I finally had to admit that I was just not going to be able to fit in the thing...
So I started over with the Deuce rails, and the Unibody construction.
The car is 3'11" tall now, with the Hard top on...
Your car is really cool, it has the look.
I cant wait to follow the progress on it...

I think it looks "REAL"!!!!!!!!!!!
ryan your TALL ASS isn't going to fit in that thing unless you get the deuce rails,
6'4",,,
Sucks being tall sometimes huh?

Flips 33 is crashed, think the 32 roadster he has is getting that motor from the 33...
I could be wrong because the 32 roadster might be headed for B-ville....

I loved the 33, it was one of my favorite cars...
Ryan I'm sorry I missed you in AUSTIN,
Did jimmy let you hear the message?
hahahah
I got yours..

Ryan, that motor looks great! You know I have a soft spot for flatties.
You'll appreciate the extra 6" of headroom the '32 rails will give you. One tip for you though....after hitting my head on the roof (A-coupe chopped 4.5 on '32 rails) a few times, I've learned that if you lean your head to the side when you hit a big bump, you'll gain a bit more clearance! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You know, you're right, that car is too low....Not very practical, either, with those little ittie bittie windows. Those tires sticking up like that would probably cause problems, too.I can help you out of this terrible situation, though.I'll trade you straight up for my wifes Subaru. It's green, you would really like it.Very practical, too.I think it gets very good gas mileage, too, except when my wife is driving it.A very practical flat 4 cylinder.

Reggie, driving your car last weekend has got me all fired up again. Prolly the first REAL traditional hot rod I've driven in 3 or 4 years... No telling what you cost me!

Germ, I missed you too gorgeous. Jimmy handed me the cell to hear your ramble and I just had to reply man. Laughed pretty hard when I put on my prison slippers the next morning after my beauty bath. We could have taken over the capitol David Koresh style holmes...

Tall. I hate being it sometimes. I don't even get the added benefits with the ladies as my back makes me slump and makes me look short. I was good in my time though - should have been there.

6'3"? What a co-inky-dink! I'm 3'6". So gimme the car, you brobdignagian mutant.

Yow, that after-pic of Flip's coupe made me cry worse than a double bill of "Brian's Song" and "Field of Dreams."

04-01-2004, 05:40 PM
To fit you your coupe you would have to be 3' 6". that think is tiny inside.. unless you are sitting in the runble seat area and looking thru both the back and front windows to see out (or over)

Slick mill. I understand your seating problem though, I'm only 5'11" and too much channel without putting wells in the floor just kills me.
On the other hand it would be a shame to change the little coupe, so if you don't fit I'm just across town http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Be interested in seeing the end result, Tardel has a good eye and builds some pretty neat stuff.

Ryan

Yeah, Keith is pretty much the smartest guy I know. He can make a traditional Ford revolutionary in ways that others have never even thought about doing. You have to see one of his cars in person to really understand it. He's one of my best friends, so obviously I'm biased... but, trust me on this one.

At first it felt weird that he was building MY hot rod, but it is my dream car and he can do things I can't begin to. Afterall, this isn't a simple bolt together deal like my '38 was... Lots of fabrication and thinking and figuring and... well, you get the point.

It's a VERY long term project and I would be pretty surprised to be driving it in a year or two. I'm so stoked to see the motor though... been thinking about driving Reggie's '32 and firing up that motor all day.

Like Mike Zenor said, we are short, feel free to pass your kick ass ride down to one of us who can fit in it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif.....seriously tho, thats gonna be one hell of a kickass ride once its all done, its already kickass as is. Whoever said earlier that you should put that flatty in a chevy....well....that doesnt need to happen http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. I know an older gentleman in Oregon that had an ol 32 with brand new edelbrock heads in the early fifties, I love talkin cars with that dude http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Maybe ill post an ol pic of him if i can find em

You can't go on a diet to get shorter.

Edit: That wrecked '34 looks like a driver's training video from the mid-fifties. What a shame - that car has been very inspirational for my view of '34 coupes, which I used to hate because I thought you had to build them with gigantic supercharged big-blocks or hemis and too-big tires on the back.

Hey Ryan... damn nice ride there... what was the chop on it? I read in Rex's specs that it was a 4inch but looks way more in the photo on this thread... just wondering how much I am going to chop my 32 truck... I am 5'11" and maybe not going to channel it. I want a slammed chop for sure though. Nice work!

Like the chop, although, personally thought that the original 'tall/unchopped' look was not only 'refreshingly different', but also fitting for the 40's build.

Either way,

Man am I jealous. Where in the hell can a guy without your connections score one of these? I would love to find one to build that wasn't solid ass rust, but where? Another thing Ryan. How come you never see traditional style hotrods around here? After seeing those pictures...I've got my eyes peeled. This board is sucking me in, that thing is awesome.

Ryan
04-01-2004, 11:44 PM
Jason... traditional hot rods have never been big around Midland... Not sure why. I didn't see my first traditional car till I moved to France - ironic.

Anyway, if you really wanna get sucked in and learn about all of this stuff you need to buy as many Dean Batchelor books as ya can. Start with this one:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0760313032/qid=1080879359/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/104-7163238-7603904?v=glance&s=books

There are lots of different trains of thoughts on how a car should be built today, but these books give ya a foundation atleast. From there you can decide exactly what you are into...

I agree with Ryan Keith is AWSOME!! He builds a bad ass car!!

Now I am going to cry seing pics of my car and all the kind words. The car is in pieces in my garage and driveway at this time. I was planning on building my 32 and turning the three window into a bonneville car.? Keith is sooooo busy that we haven't had time to work on the race car chassis, or the put the roadster frame in the jig yet, for that matter. Either way the car will live again.

I crashed it on the way back from the 2001 or 2002 river city reliability run, and that was the best and worst day all in one. my dream car wrecked in shitty L.A. of all places. Hey the ribs stopped hurting after a couple months and the tooth was lost in another crash but......Fuck seing that car still hurts.

Ryan,
It looks to me from where the toe board part of the firewall is aettin you have that body channeled 7"-8".
If it was only channeled the 4" height of the frame would the extra 3"-4" of height you'd gain be enough for you to fit in?

Ryan-

A few summers ago, I was going up to Vern's place (and Keiths at the time) a few times a month. Your coupe always pulled me in like a magnet. Also saw David's (Six5Monster) lil' yellow roadster before he started on it. I'm heading up to Vern's this weekend in my Roadster for the first time, so if you need anything while I'm there, let me know.
