a driver of a mid 50's bel air gave me the address for the hamb... might i say great forum. i do not own a big piece of american iron, just a slug of german steel. dont flame me but i want to make i different than the rest of the million or soo mercedes benz 300D's.. yes its a diesel .. more specifically a 5 cylinder turbocharged diesel

i have been thinking of lowering the car slightly and putting factory chrome hubcaps with some homemade white walls(saw the vid, its awesome) and painting it a flat black or flat brown and redo all the chrome(well its anodized aluminum, except the bumpers)

if you have any advice it would be awesome. and again, please dont hate me for asking for some advice on customizing an old german sedan . most of the mercedes guys have questioned my sanity

Sir, step away from the Benz, and put down the paint sprayer!

Then you might spend a while looking at what these forum postings are really about.

I don't think that the world is ready for an ol' skool rat rod Benz.

Later, Kinky6

its an '85... i suppose to new but to me it has a nice shape.. i could always look for a "fin" (early 60's models to late 60's IIRC)

thats a fin

yea, if you could pry a fin from the owners cold dead hands, or find one that isnt rusted out.

i think the LWB(long wheel base) car's would have potential.. but i want to use what ive got...

i shall return ...eventually with something appropriate.

but i thank the owner of the video "make your own whitewalls"

it will prove usefull since no one makes whitewalls within my price range for the 300D

sounds like a cool project. Though, I too agree one not really suited for this forum. However, have you seen this page:

http://allshops.org/

that's one not dedicated specifically to traditional hot rods with lots of great info

But, I bet when its done and you post it up you'd at least get a 50% positive reaction, and that's good considering the crowd here :D

good luck!

hey, new guy it is an easy custom ,,, just follow junkadelics' instructions Slam it on the ground (heat the springs and throw blocks in the rear) ,,,, throw a set of hundred spoke knock off wires on it with white walls (399 on e-bay)... throw some curb feelers on it,, custom fab some fenderskirts for it.....If it has dead paint even better..... just leave it let it oxidize.... look for every outer accesory possible for it,,,, treat it like an old bomb.... it will be bad... if you are close to N.C i will pin stripe it out for you.... your buddie with the baremetal 75" is going in the right direction...Low and slow ..Pimp IT.Remember Trashy Is better... and dragin' curb feelers is a lost art.....

im going to a car swap meet in zephryhills,fl in november to see if i can score any neat things i.e. metal coolers, old auto club grill badges, i like the auto stuff from the 50-60's era

Hey... he posted an intro which is better than 50% of the newbs that stumble in here.

Nice old Benz... good luck with the build... if'n it were mine, I'd make it start, stop, turn and idle... and drive the shit outta it. I would like to see you stay away from the flat-anything though, but that's just me.

Yeah, practice on the Benz, then go buy a 20, 30,40,50 or 60's car and we will be here to help!!!

I have heated many springs , with a hand held propane bottle...while laying under the car, smoking a cig, and drinkin' a beer, Its as close to a religious experience as I will ever have , of course I am not very religious! The heating of the springs is not a problem.... never had an issue..done more than I know ...It scares people ,because they love fear, and buying exspensive suspension components.....Heat'em if you got 'em......Oh, yeh the best part of heating them,,is the breakin run afterwards... it usually brings them on down another inch or so .....

thankyou for the compliment, im a member of about 15 other forums and a moderator of 3 so i guess i had enough practice

ill post more when i get an american classic.. heck today when i was buying some firewood the guy had a early 60's F250 and i asked how much he wants for it he said, ill trade for the benz or $2000.... and it was in decent shape not alot of rust engine ran interior was decent.. bed wasnt rusted through. if i had the money i would have bought it.
