You are not alone. I paid and waited, and waited. wrote emails, finally got issue #2 after it was out on the newstands and I can see #3 will be late as well. They are a sister mag to the HORSE which is a pretty good chopper rag but I don't think OSR will last long. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Issue 1 looked like it would be good, so I bought it. The editors could not have picked worse shots of cars to start off with. The article on Jesse James' car, regardless of what you think of him, was pathetic. Some of the worst pix I have ever seen for a magazine. The car is very nice and needed better shots. And anyone who asks could you have done better, "hell yeah"
2nd, WTF is with this mag? Is it trying to gear itself towards the " I live in SoCal, buy a 4 door, cut the roof off so all 12 of my buddies car drive in it and we can drink PBR and call it a kustom because we all have coats and the car is black with red rims" crowd? Maybe its because I have had a little too much to drink and have to be up in 5 hours 4 work. This magazine, along with a lot of things I have noticed lately, are really starting to piss me off. Stop befor I make real enemies.....

I picked up #3 at a local bookstore, "Hastings", along with Custom Rodder, and some CD's...

OSR's pictures suck farts from my ass. I wanted to see Jesse James' car as well..but instead it was closeups of gas caps & shots of him...like we don't see his mug on everything all the time anyhow.

I also hate the little 1/4-page advertisements in the middle of an editorial...it throws me off, and is quite annoying.

The pics in #3 have gotten better, and I dig the selection of cars...especially the red '57 Ford at the back.

Anyways...I don't think OSR will last long...so I'd get my money back for those subscriptions before it disappears for good.

I don't really read much so the writing does not bother me and yes it is nice to see a picture of an entire car once in a while. hahaha not a shot of the shotgun gas cap or whatever was on jesse's 36. But our own nummnuts is in issue 3 thats cool. bottom line I guess is I would rather go to the book store and pick up ol skool rodz rather than popular hot rodding!!! the only draw back that I can see is when you have to ask the worker at the store. do you have old school rodz then you realize I am going to have to spell it to them because it's spelled so freekin stupid. kinda makes you feel like your 8 years old. or perhaps the guy that came up with the name hade a nissan and flipped the name upside down to spell nassin that was cool to do when I was in high school duhhhh hahahaha OSR 4 LIFE!!!!!!!

I have to agree with A-bomber on OSRs, it's cool to see a HAMBer in the mag (numnuts). I was disappointed in the pics of a few of the cars. Like the pile-up,jessies.... mostly just shots of parts on cars , not full pics. Other then that she's a good magazine. Not much diffrent on CCD..On the speeling jess deel wit it...

Gotta disagree when it comes to the photo's though.Lot's of them shot by one of our very own, Mike Harrington (Buick59) really liked the shots on the deserted road.I also thought the Bonneville coverage was kick ass, even though he missed the ice fishing shot.

Alright which one is numnuts car? I liked the article they did on Bo Huff, I've always heard of people talking about him just never knew the story behind the man. The story on Jimmy White 32 fueled my desire more to build something out of nothing. He started out not knowing how to weld and stuff and look what happened, he has one hellacious cool car. I respect that. All the other articles I like also. The only beef I have with this issue was there wasn't any tech article. I couldn't care less how well the mag is put together as long as it has bitchen hot rods and kool kustoms I'll get it. I just wish I could get all the mags like this, but then I'd never get anything done(not that I do now) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I hope you get your sub situation straightened out, thats not good for businness there. later plmczy

"I picked up issue #3 today at Barnes & Nobles, and the issue is quite a mess. I was really disappointed."

I couldnt disagree more, issue #3 is the best yet. Maybe I am biased because I am good friends with Bo, but it rocks. Ivo's article on Jimmy White was good too, I have always heard about him and his Hemi A, and seen the Video in MFS clip, but the article told more.. The mag is good, prob. the best out there (besides Rolls&Pleats).. But what do I know, I live in Utah and have a 4-door, no red rims though so maybe I am missing something!! quit whining

#3 is good. Sure they need to aim their editorial in a less PLAYSKOOL direction. Mikes shots are killer as usual. Lot of HAMBers cars. Nummnuts sedan lookin fine as well.

Junkyard Dog 32
04-01-2004, 11:13 AM
In #2 it seemed the writers were poking fun at the "Playskool" spelling. I kinda thought it was funny, after reading the letter in the front.

Just a guess, but I'd bet the folks from OSR are reading these posts, and are, likely, trying to make changes based on what the feedback is. I bet they know their own shortcomings, and are doing all they can.

When you build a car, it takes a few trips around the block to get the bugs worked out... Give 'em a break.

I really like OSR, and I hope they get 'er tweaked.

After seeing this post, I went out and grabbed a copy of the third issue at the local book joint.

I see no problem with it...there's an article on Numnut's sedan, Jimmy White's Hemi A-bone, a cool chopped 50s Dodge in progress owned by a kid, a neat little yellow track-T, and other shit worth readin' and looking at.

The Bo Huff article was cool, and the ads are actually refreshing if you ask me! SO much nicer than the multi-page Heidts ads and such in OTHER mags!!

The magazine caters to our kind of cars and features rides you'll NEVER see in the "mainstream" printed media. Sure, there's a few rough edges here and there, but these guys are just starting out...they'll get it ironed out!

(I've been reading The Horse Backstreet Choppers mag for quite a while, so the format isn't as new to me as it may be to some of you more used to STREET RODDER or something.)

I can understand your gripe if you paid for a subscription and didn't receive anything...but if OSR is like most other mags, subs are handled by outside services that are often not directly part of the magazine's staff.

You have a right to be pissed if you're not getting what you paid for, but bashing a magazine that features the kinds of cars we dig and drive? I can't see that...I've enjoyed all three issues so far and look forward to more!

(I read Custom Rodder to balance out the rough cars in OSR...I like some of the stuff they feature and I dig seeing high end completed customs once in a while, too. CR and OSR are the only two car mags I read cover to cover.)

I've noticed that OSR sells out FAST around here, too...so they must have hit a bullseye with people other than us...cuz I doubt that there's THAT many HAMBers in my city!

LOL, I agree the mag caters to our kind of stuff for the most part. If you don't like some of it then flip the page. The fact of the matter is if OSR were to stick a $50 gift certificate to Outback steak house in every issue, someone would complain that it wasn't sizzler! And yes Mike's pics look pretty good to me, and I'm not saying it because he's on the HAMB. To many excuse shitty work around here because it might be a hamber and they dont want to get slammed, I on the other hand will say it sucks and I don't care who it is. That magazine sucks! Not sure why any of you would support it enough to purchase a subscription. The first issue features a car with a jag rear end. That's not ol skool with a k or a ch, that just sucks. I felt completely belittled when I read the first issue (borrowed it). If you want to see pictures of greasers that own hot rods, keep buyin it. Personally, I just want to see the hot rods. They have had some cool cars featured, but the emphasis on how tall the owners pompadour is just aint movin me. I'll stick to CK, Hop Up, Rodders Journal, etc.

Alright guys, yes there uh pros, and CONS about this rag. I went this morning and had coffee at the boarders and read most of it.
Theres an article on the guy with the custom dodge, that thing is not even finished, way hacked. I don't know about showing stuff like that in a rag. They should call it "work in progress" but tey show the guy running it like it's done.

The Bo Huff article was pretty cool, infact there was another article with the guy on the cover that had vintage chopper pics which were cool.
OK about Huff's 57, that car is cool but it has ben around the block. In fact it was in the mooneyes catalog about 5 years ago, I love how they say checkout the 30" shifter when they don't include a shot of the interior.
One thing that gets me is the pixelized pictures they publish, I think they get a lot through emails and don't have anyone to take real shots.

The mag is a piece of shit, but why do I keep buying it? What I hate the most are those stupid greaser 'rat' drawings (no offense, but I've seen gradeschoolers who can draw better.) they should dump them and use the space for more cars. I do like the pics of the low 't' though.

It's not the content that bothers me. I like Kustom Kulture, the Rockabilly Greaser thang. It's cool and a breath of fresh air. I know everybody is having fun. I love that the scene is irreverent. This is fun!

I enjoyed that Nummnuts ride was profiled and the Dodge has potential when they get a little more serious with it. The Bo Huff article was cool. It's just needs to be a little slicker a little more grapically polished, that's all. I just couldn't enjoy it enough. I realize it must be awfully difficult to put out a magazine. There has to be a million things to do. But, in order to survive it has to get alot better.

I hope that CKD is a better issue this time too, That cover has got me scared. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Just curious.. What were all of your guys' opinions of the first 2 issues of 'HOT ROD DELUXE' (published in 1999, now being published as 'CAR CULTURE DELUXE')? In my opinion, the first 2 issues of HRD kinda sucked, save the write-up on the CHOPPERS. Now CKD has the reputation of ONE OF the best rags out there on the subject matter, and I tend to agree.

When I compare issue #1 of HRD (CKD) to issue #1 of OSR, OSR is the clearcut winner. Sure the mag has it's shortcomings, but it's a new publication. My bet is they will do well, time will tell.

I've had problems with the delivery of my CK Deluxe subscription, and they told me it was due to the fact that the CKD did not distribute the mags to their subscribers, but a separate company did.....

I will continue to buy both

Is that as far as "lifestyle" magazines go? For that Garage kicks ass in that arena- and for pure hot rods Hop Up is the undisputed KING! The rest only rank because there really isn't any competition.

The first page of their Web site was all I needed to see what was going on here. It says:

"Do you love kustom-built American iron? Do you like the thrill of the wind blowing through your hair at 100 mph in something that you created in your own garage? Then keep up with the latest and greatest hot rods and customs from around the world."

"Ol' Skool RodZ brings you the best from the hot rod and kustom world. Cruise with us down Nostalgic Avenue to check out the kustom... Light up the tires on Hot Rod Lane with open wheeled rods and check out the grease monkeys wrenching, painting and striping their sleds in home garages. This is where you'll find baddest of the bad. No $100,000 show queens or chromed out trophies here. Ol' Skool RodZ magazine will entertain and inform the (pre 1970) American car builder/enthusiast."

"Ol' Skool RodZ is about old metal bodies, carburetors and straight pipes. We'll bring you the best from car clubs around the globe - the universe. No mambsy-pansy editorials or chicken shit pandering. We'll call it as we see it and cut to the chase. With grassroots reporting, in-your-face features and hot babes to warm your oil. We're putting the grease back in the greaser Kulture."

"We'll cover events, road trips, unauthorized drags and let you in on the shoptalk, tech tips and roadside repairs from America's best ol' skool rod builders and fabricators. We'll cover rods from Model A's to chopped trucks and maybe a suede bare bones Caddy now and then. Hot Rod art, tattoos and open straight pipes on lazy summer days will help set the backdrop to a magazine that will make a difference."

================================================== ==========

Hot rods and Harleys. They go together quite well. But you're either a hot rodder or you're not. Obviously, owning a hot rod is only part of it. And you're either a biker or you're not. As we all know, there's more to being a biker than buying a Softail. The point here is that the magazine is put out by bikers, not hot rodders. I don't read The Horse but they seem to have a reputation for being good at writing about choppers and the biker lifestyle. But that doesn't make them hot rodders, or qualified to write about hot rods and hot rodders.

The real irony here is that since the mid-Eighties (after the new Harley-Davidsons became somewhat easier to maintain, with the changeover to the Evolution engine in the Big Twin models in 1984), we've been hearing bikers complain about their community having been invaded by RUBs (rich urban bikers) - people who just buy a new Harley-Davidson and start acting like bikers. Real bikers regard those people with the same disdain that we have for what we call gold-chainers - the people who just buy a high-dollar finished car and call themselves hot rodders. And yet the people who write this magazine have done to us what they hate having done to them: unqualified outsiders representing themselves as insiders, and writing about them in order to make money.

This doesn't really matter to me. I've never seen the magazine or looked for it. And although I had a book published in 1993 that was called Harley-Davidson Performance Parts Directory, I'll never be a biker. I love hot rods, race cars, drag boats, Ducatis, Moto Guzzis, Nortons, and good mountain bikes too much for that.

Did any of you ever stop to think that maybe we aren't "Ol Skool Rodz" target audience?

I mean, if you've ever looked at the mag, it's pretty obvious that it's dumbed down to the point where an illiterate 3rd grade retard could somewhat comprehend it.

I really think the magazine is positioning itself to be the "industry leader" when the mullet wearing camaro/ Monster Truck/ Nascar crowd catches on to the "new hip rat rod rockerbilly" scene.

"Hey Jim Bob, you seen that new Ol' Skool Rodz rag? I like it because there's lots of pictures of black primer and it don't hurt my brain too bad."

Anyone that is seriously into traditional Rods and/or customs won't care anything about Ol' Skool Rodz because it's a fucking joke when compared side by side with Hop Up or TRJ. And as far as the lifestyle portion is concerned, Garage Magazine makes Ol' Skool rodz its bitch...no contest.

Don't get me wrong...I'll buy The Horse magazine (obviously published by the same company) if there's something in it I like, because there is no real alternative. But it makes me wish there was a magazine the caliber of TRJ that was covering traditional bike builds....anyone listening?

I'm not saying they should shut their doors and close up shop, just that they should either nurture their image as a joke and do something original with it (what a concept!), or cut out the bullshit and concentrate on becoming a quality magazine with real car features.

And Bigums, I have no idea who you might be talking about. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif However, I will say that Peter Vincent is a fucking ruler....one look at that article with his photos and it shows.

Man...first all we hear is that the "big" magazines are too filled with billet goldchainer crap...

...then along comes a real, live magazine that features cool and crude cars built by teens who couldn't get anyone to help 'em chop their four door 50s tanker, so they did it themselves a bunch of times till THEY liked the way it looked...

...who CARES if he drives it while he finishes it???

Stuff like that makes me GLAD to fork over six bucks every couple of months...show me REAL cars built by average guys and gals...it's a refreshing contrast to the high dollar, built-on-commission-for-checkwriters cars that we see in mainstream mags...and I'm glad to have the new mag to look forward to!

Yeah, the goofy-ass lifestyle stuff is comical...it adds a sense of FUN (oh shit...not FUN!) to the atmosphere of the mag and shows that it doesn't take itself too seriously!

"WWWAAAAAHHHHH...the big magazines are full of Goldchainers!"

okay, check out this new mag

"WWAAAAAAAAHHHH...it's got a funny name and greasers with primered cars in it!"

Damn...can't make you HAPPY...go read Playgirl!

And to you bleedy fucking vaginas IF YOU HAVE A FUCKIN PROBLEM WITH MY STUFF SAY IT TO MY FACE! If you can shoot better pictures than me and write better articles then DO IT! You brave Keyboard warriors!

Why don't you turn on your boob tubes and watch monster garage or Orange county choppers or Amercan hot rod. Seems like so much cry baby shit goes on here. Some of you fuckers are not happy unless you are constantly crying about shit and what other people are doing.

OL Skool Rodz is paying for my tutition photo equipment etc etc. How many of you get to say you get paid for doing what you love......and for me that is shooting cars. Maybe some of you should get pay checks for constantly complaining and bitching and pissing and moaning.

I know I am not the best writer or photographer.......but lets see you panzy assholes that criticize do any better. Cmon' put up or shut up! I realy would like to see how much better you can do.

Don't like it don't buy it! About the people who are not getting their stuff.........I'll do my best to ask around about getting it sent to you. PM if ya like with your addresses.

Do I love every car featured in there.......no way. But thats why they have menu's in Restaurants don't they. That 50's caddy in the 1st issue that was owned by the tattoo guy has to be one of the ugliest, most overdone pieces of shit I've ever seen in recent years. I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than look at that thing again.

Considering their target market, I think they would sell more magazines if they had a section in the back devoted to cute rockerbilly hairstyles and outfits for men.

I'm not going to rant or rave about the mag. But I will say this, I do enjoy it because here in "Squirrel Nuts" Arkansas the Kustom Kulture or what ever it's being refered to these days, is slim to non. Me and one other guy are the only two in Central Arkansas thats into this shit and he never comes to anything locally. The rest of the guys are in LA(Lower Arkansas), or up North. I think there are what like six or seven HAMBer's on this site. Now I'm sure there are more but out here its 4X4's and muscle cars. The reason I wont bitch about the mag itself is because and not a photographer nor a writer so I have no business criticizing either. Look I don't see why you guys are so hard on OSR. I"ll admit the first issue was a little ruff, the name is a bit hokey, and Jessie's entire car should have been in at least one shot. You can't see the flow of a nice custom from a bunch of dis-jointed art shots. But as much as we have all bitched about that I don't think they will make that mistake again. How many of you were completly satisfied with your first car build, or your first attempt at painting or pinstriping? To me this issue is their best yet. This mag beats the ones all the arm-chair experts out there are NOT publishing. The perfect Magazine? no. Room for improvement? Sure, but give 'em a chance.

Everytime one of us DOESN"T buy a car magazine,we should send Ryan a Buck.

Buy what you like.
Don't like it,don't buy it.
Simple.

If the magazine speaks to you... buy it.

If the magazine isn't your "one handed reading material"...

leave it on the shelf. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

OSR is a fledgling mag that needs to get it's shit together. Regardless of whether you like the name or not, I actually like the mag. I was, however, very dissapointed with issue #3. Basically, I thought it sucked. But I for one like the lay-out, the pics are getting much better, the subject matter has been good...but if they lose the tech they lose my sub. I just hope it doesn't turn into CKD. DO NOT reply on my CKD reference please. What I am getting at by that statement is that I thought CKD was the shit, for the first four or five issues. After that it went down hill real fast, imo. I hope that same thing doesn't happen to OSR. But, they need to get their shit together to prevent that from happening. IMO, they took a step back with issue #3. I give them leeway since they are new to the magazine bidnezz.
As far as the subscription is concerned, I have gotten tremendous service so far and I hope they keep up the good work....at least for me.
