AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, tonight was a good night after a dicey day in the fargin dentist's chair getting my annual root canal.
Loaded up on pain pills and leaped into the Rocky goodtime van and motored over the Mighty Missouri river to Carkiller's place. It's still as amazing as ever with half his parts business, a few harleys and at least 2 hot rod projects all jambed into an old 2 car garage! In all that confusion, he pulls out two '59 Buick front backing plates and an old Pontiac posi 3rd member for me....
The buick backing plates are going behind my finned buick drums and 2.5" self energizing buick brakes, all bolted to my 40 ford spindles on a 4" dropped, chrome tube axle. This mo-fo oughta stop when I holler "STOP"!
I dunno what gears are bolted to the old posi carrier but I have several sets of 3.23's in good shape I can reuse or maybe even get nuts with some drag-strip gears. I'm thinkin I'll whip together a drag-strip 3rd member with a full spool instead with some race gears....Doesn't take very long to swap out a poncho 3rd member in the parking lot.
When I take delivery of my new finned buick drums, I'll begin putting the front brake package together and I'll chronicle the assembly with lots of digital photos for a real-live HAMB tech post....coming soon to a computer near you! Stay tuned as I muddle my way through this as I've never done this particular swap before but it can't be too hard, right?

Nice man, nice. Does that 3rd member "crate" happen to say Punishable under federal law? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey, Tuck...if a Saginaw THREE SPEED is strong enough for a 402 El Camino figure eight racer...it'll do ya just fine!

Tuck, when ya look in the little "windows" of the carrier, you can see the clutch discs where the axle shafts come into the side gears. I can see about 3 discs before they go outa site. My non-posi 3rd members have no discs and the entire center is open on one side so you can see and install/remove the little side gears and the pin they ride on. It's completely different looking than this one.

cool
question #2
would it be "easier" to modify the self energizeing breaks off of the buicks I stole those drums off of and use them on the ford spindles? Just redrill the holes or machine out the centers and do a swap?

that would rule

Tuck...never having done it, I dunno yet. That's why I'm going to attempt using the buick backing plates. Carkiller tells me there's only 2 years that have the correct offset and even then a 3/16ths spacer is needed, I'm told.
But I have no first hand info on any of this shit yet...I'll know more as I go through this shit. BTW, the plates I got are from a '59..
Here's a shitty photo of where the clutch plates are in my 3rd member. I know, I know...ya can't make out a thing...neither can I but they're there.

Sounds like a cool project. Judging by the recess in the Buick B/plates, you might have to make a spacer between them and the spindles. It's hard to see but these Lincolns have a spacer to make up for the deep recess in the b/plates. The recess depth looks similar. Keep us posted.
