I have a late 70's gm tilt column, and I am loosing the column shift.

(1) can I just pop the shift lever pin out of the lever and pull it out, or do I have to disassemble the column and remove the shifting rod. I plan on cutting the nub off the column flush with the rest of the collar

(2)how can I disable or remove the column lock, that locks the wheel when in park? was thinking of just welding the shift tab at the bottom of the column to avoid tearing the column apart.
Thanks
Scott

Pull the pin- remove the Handle [with the shifter in LOW] GEAR....[bypasses the locking part]CUT OFF the shift lever.
saw off the shifter pin mount area/grind flush and fill with fiberglass filler............

Only problem with leaving it in low gear is my key is in the column. how hard is it to remove the pin that locks the wheel? Can it be done without tearing the column down?

Mine was a late 70's tilt floor shift column from a camaro with the key in the column. I shaved off the key, removed everything that looked like a locking mechanism, and reassembled the column. Took about 2 hours--no big deal. Go ahead and tear it down. That way you can check the turn signal stuff and make sure that its all in good shape and relube everything. Dynatron bumper repair epoxy works good to fill the holes with a piece of tape on the backside of the hole til it dries. Giver Hell!
