Thanks Kontinentals for another great show!! I was amazed how many real Hot Rods and Kustoms attended this years show. This year I was going to try to remember everyone's real names instead of their HAMB names. After the first three I was already lost, so lost that I can't even remember the HAMB names that I meet. "Sorry guys."

The only question that I have is this picture a new trend for Hot Rodding? Sorry the picture is a little dark, but their RV lights were not bright enough. I guess this Stray Kat can't run with the Big Dogs.

Thanks again guys for a great time!

Happy Trails,

Mick

I don't understand...
What "trend"?
The bad picture?
The lighting of lights at night?
Please splain...

there were four HUGE Rockstar Tour busses down the street that were pulling enclosed trailers and immaculate streetrods. Each rig all together was probably worth close to a million dollars. They had christmas lights, and gazebo tents, etc. It was pretty crazy.

they were the owners of the woodie, and the convertible streetrods.

DrJ, those guys RVed their rods all the way down from dallas! they didn't quite fit in.

I believe he is talking about the RV parking lot that was just south of the club. Some of our elder and more well off rodders trailered their cars down behind their RVs and kind of camped out...

I heard some negative reaction to this too, but to be honest it doesn't bother me at all. Those guys were having fun just like we were and they certainly weren't hurting anyone. Plus, those were the guys that brought that cream '36 roadster and that gorgeous '32 3w.

If you were loaded and could afford to do it, would you? I don't think I would, but who's to say?

I see what look like a woodie next to a surf board leaning on a big motor home….
Ether that or a city bus ran into the woodie and knocked the board off?

I have never been one to say anything about trailers...I have used them myself. Heck, I would love to have that kind of rig...but when we were walking down the street that was a trip to see...lights, food, the whole bit...it was like a little Vegas on Congress!

This is why NSRA has banned camping at the Nats East in York,Pa.They take up way too much room and you never see their cars move.
Too bad for the Scotty crowd, though.I'm gonna miss them this year.

I've thought about that, like what if I actually bought a Lottery ticket and it actually wone the gazillion dollars.
I'd sell the half million dollar tool shed I live in here and buy 2-3 car garages within a block of every SHERATON hotel in every city big enough to have a SHERATON.
Then I'd park one (or two) of the cool hotrods or customs I had built for me to my exact dream of what they should look like (I don't have enough years left to build that many myself, so I'd hire ALL the builders on the HAMB full time!) in each one of them and I'd just cruise around the country visiting all the national and state parks and going to car shows and switching off which car I drove on the next leg of the journey at a whim... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
But I no way in hell would I be my own "tour bus" driver...boooooring! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

No negative remarks from this Kat. Saturday night I got the chance to talk to the guys and they were alright. I wish I could remember their names....The Forty Ford Woody & the 36 Ford Roadster the guys owned were awesome.... I had two older guys approach me over the weekend, and asked if Dewey had RV hook ups? I was not prepared to answer this question. This is the reason for my question.

If this is something that is needed at a show, than I need to make sure that the Stray Kat 500 is prepared.

Happy Trails,

Mick

Look I'm not bad mouthing people with money I jest don't understand them. If I had that much money to spend I'd most likely jest build 7 rats and drive one a day rather than build one trailer queen. The way I see it is that they came down for a "car show". If you trailer it down, you don't have to clean it for the show, the wife is comfy, and you have 1st class accomodations for the weekend. Perfectly fine for the car show.

"We", however, were at a weekend Roundup. A huge part of the fun is driving down in a caravan with your buddies, cruising Congress on Fri. and Sat. night, driving to Ski Shores Sunday morning, or fighting the speed bumps at Flyrite.

Is that a big difference? To me it is. If it's not to them, then more power to 'em! As long as they are having fun.

if they had mobile homes like that... i cant imagine what their garages look like at home.. big moolah ..maybe i can be their lackey.. you know.. cleaning the garage.. fixing their cars.. walking the dog..

I gotta say ..I had a great time at the roundup..even though I got there late and left a little early on Sunday...but I'm not so sure it would have been nearly as much fun if I had trailered my truck out and parked 3 blocks away from the club ...that would have been way too far to stumble after the drinkin!
Besides ...when ya drive'em...some of the best parts are the trip...not always the destination......for me anyway

Maybe I'm a jerk, but I think it's pretty weak. It's that street rod mentality. Dallas is only about 3 hours from Austin...if your ride is as finished as those cars...DRIVE the thing. "Look at what I own" cars don't impress me at all. The heart and soul to a cool, outdoor gathering is all the cars that are built with the purpose of being driven. Big-buck mobile homes, pulling big-buck trailers, carrying big-buck, rarely-driven cars should be reserved for AutoRama type shows. I'm sure I'll get beat up over this point of view...but you know a lot of you are thinking the same thing...I'll take the heat. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Theres 50 million different ways to look at anything. I didnt meet them but I'm glad they wanted to hang with us. I'm a poor boy, try to build decent traditional hot rods out of rusty junk. If it weren't for the people much better off financially than me doing their thing the legislators and bureacrats would have outlawed us and shut down our obsession that we all live and breathe 24-7 long ago. Money talks, these folks, thru spending their money on high dollar cars, weilding their power, keep the goverment jackals at bay, thus allowing us to continue to do what we do. Besides, the San Jose had no vacany, they had to have some place to sleep!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The speed bumps at Flyrite will be gone by the next party.

You guys dont like my motor home?

That 36 was phenomenal. It was kinda funny, across from the club (Jardland http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) you have 6 beautiful cars from Cal that look like they hadn't ever been washed. Just down the street, 3 cars that look like they have never been driven. Definitely different attitudes. I prefer the first, but it all beats fishing.

I guess my cars "could" be called close to finished like that (maybe?) and I drove them, and I gotta admit that was the fun part for me...but if I was going to Cali or back to MN or someplace like that I would rather trailer because a super long drive like that always gives me too much stress...so I guess I am half a wuss or something? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

And yes, I realize I ain't normal when it comes to car care...I don't like rock chips and I freaking hate it when things break...I like to just be able to jump in anytime and go anywhere and look sorta good doing it...as good as a chump like me can look...I guess I am a cruiser at heart or something. I freaking love driving my cars but I also love keeping them up...some kind of "maintainer" syndrom or something?

We get them up here. Caravan of 3 or 4 motorhomes shows up about a week before the season to grab the best spot. Then the trucks with the generator, sattelite dish, lighting, cook's tent and four wheelers arrives. Guides show up, check their radios and head out on the four wheelers to scout the area and push game from the areas they aren't going to hunt to the areas they have best axcess to. Head guide sets up his comunications center and map room to plot the guides actions.
Night before opening day four drunk dentists or doctors show up in a limo from the airport just as the cook has the steaks about ready and the game's on TV. They eat, down a bottle of Jack and talk about how great it is to be back in the outdoors under the stars then drift off to the motorhomes for the night.

It's called Elk hunting up here... And it ain't what it used to be...

I probably whined about the motorhome guys to one person or another during the roundup, but here's my thing...

This Roundup is the most informal, friendly car show I've ever been to. It's been that way for as long as they've had 'em. When people divide off like that into their own little groups, I know they don't mean it, but it sort of feels like they're too good to hang out with the rest of us down near the Continental Club. I admit that I myself am an anti-social guy (not on purpose, I just am) and I can be a real retard at times, but at least I try to get along and hang out...these guys had their own little town and acted sorta like they didn't want to hang out with the rest of us...that's why I didn't like it.

Again, that's just the impression I got at the time. They're probably good folks all round.

BARNETT
03-31-2004, 02:13 PM
Merc50...I think we're essentially saying the same thing. If somebody wants to trailer their car across the country, I can sorta understand it...sorta. Personally, I would be inclined to drive my old ride across country, if I had the time, rather than trailer it across country. Somebody mentioned that they thought those buses were from Dallas, though...that is a whole different story. It's only a 3 hour drive! I'm sure they had freshly built motors and either leather or tweed upholstery and a.c. and stereos and drink holders and all the other creature comforts that a person HAS to have these days in order to drive to the super market...yet they stuck their cars in swanky trailers and pulled them behind a swanky tour-bus-of an R.V., to an outdoor car show. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions and ways of doing things...I just think some of these people are missing the basic point to a car...it was meant to be driven.

porknbeaner
03-31-2004, 02:17 PM
Trailering cars is not a new trend its an old one.
Don't know if it's my choice of how to travel, but as I get closer to retirement I think more and more about takeing my hotel room with me and heading out for parts unknown. So who knows, I could be trailering a rod someday.
When I was a kid we used to say different spots for different dots.
BTW there was a beater Model A at the Goodguys KC last year that came in on a streacher. From what I understand the guy was/is a HAMBer, he had his whole family with him and had as much fun as is legal.
Didn't bother me at all, I just drove across town and he from parts unknown. Doubt if the whole family would have fit in the coupe, if the family isn't part of it then what good is it.
Just my .02

I saw the RV's too, and I said if I wanted to see a trailer park I would have stayed in Alabama.
The other thing I noticed was the line 50 -100 people deep to get your registration, all of that was pre-registered.I waited 1 1/2 hours and walked right up. I drank alot and had a good time while they stood there. I thought I was at a national event for minute. I guess they were just Xcited.
You know there were people staying 6 to a room at the Austin Hotel. I know that was more fun than staying in the motor homes.
Guys I drove 2000 miles round trip from Decatur,Alabama in my 46 Ford coupe and all I had to do was change one plug and adjust 2 valves on the way home.

I wish I would have told you my username on HAMB when I talked to you.
I didn't have room for the case in the car so I left it next to the door at the K club Sunday morning, maybe its in the hands of some good Texan. It turned out pretty good I would have liked to have seen everyone have a hand at it and then given it away as a door prize. My friend Brian who owns Loose Wheels Garage would have been the sponsor as a door prize. Later,Mike
