Well, I spent about two hours working on a foot and a half long scratch THAT WILL NOT COME OUT on my nice black car that I am pretty sure was made by a chain wallet. I caught a guy years ago that scratched a buddies car pretty deep at Goodguys with one and ever since I have never understood supposed car guys with them walking around cars at a show...it is a accident waiting to happen. I think I saw the two goobs that did it because they were acting really funny around my car and they both had super long dork chains with stuff hanging from them...ah well, I guess the big freaking scratch will make my car cooler now or something http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Why do you guys like those fasion things anyways...man I am bummed http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Anybody got some suggestions for me on getting it out I might not have thought of...I need to get some clear coat compound but should I do it by hand just over the scratch or what?

I had one of those back in the 70's. Then one day the wallet came out of my pocket, blew back and hooked my belt to the spokes of the back wheel on the pan...

Stupid friggin chain rubbed all the paint off the frame by the seat too but it was just a rat bike old pan so who cared back then. Price of being cool I guess.

Is it all the way through the clear into the basecoat?

That sucks. You know what Phil and Lefty always say.

A few years back, I was walking through a small car show in Joplin,Mo.
Roger Amos had his 1958 Thunderbire convertible there.
As i was walking by his car, there was a big woman, not fat, just big, with a wad of keys hanging from a long chain fastened to a belt loop.
She was looking at Roger's 'Bird and the keys were dancing along the paint.
Roger was sitting a few cars away at Brad Ryan's car visiting.
I found him and told him about the keys on his paint.
I will always remember what Roger said.
He said, "That's the risk we take when we show our cars in public. Not everyone appreciates what it takes to get an old car into shape".
The remark I hate most is "It's just an old car".

Sometime the copper rivets on levi's do just the trick too! Hey it your hell bent about people with chains make sure not to go to that viva las vegas show, everyone and their mother has wallet chains, including FASTSPORTY!
I personally don't get the whole wallet chain thing,
it can catch on anything, scratch anything.
If your a hardcore Death Trap Rodder with no floor on your rod, you can get that chain draggin look!

I wanted to be like FASTSPORTY too, so I got myself a chain wallet. He will be proud next time he sees me. I'm not too skilled in scratch avoidance yet, so hopefully there won't be any mishaps when I go over to his parent's house this week and steal his Dad's bike http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Damn that sucks. I'm sorry to hear it. I got a chain wallet but I'm careful as hell with it and I take it off and stuff it in my pocket when i'm riding in someones car cause I'm scared it will snag something. I don't know about the fashion part of it, but I'd lose the damn thing all the time if it wasn't chained to me.

I have always felt that the guys who feel the need to run a chain drive wallet must be hanging around with the wrong crowd. I would find new friends to run with if I was paranoid they were gonne steel my wallet.

I have one, but it helps keeping my funds mine if you know what I mean. It has saved me from losing my wallet a number of times, both on bike and off. But at the same token I tend to keep the chain tucked in the pocket, so as to not give away my ninja stealth.:) The jingle gets to you after a while, anywho.....

There is a good compound used in a lot of body shops (I can't recall the name to save my life right now at all). But it heats up slow, so you could use a small buffer with out fear of burning. Works great, I've used it on a few cars I've done in the past with excellent results. Looks Pepto Bismol, maybe a cool body shop could give you heads up on it.....

I was at a local car show a couple of years ago and an unsupervised kid jumped into a guys 32 coupe and started playing with the steering wheel and making burn-out noises.....the guy freaked out and was WAY ugly to the kid......at the roundup - one of the So-Cal guys had a sign by his roadster that read something like " cars are like
other guys wives - you can look but you better not touch" I thought the sign was sort of shitty.....I don't know what the answer is - people are going to be inconsiderate and thoughtless whether they mean to be or not....makes you understand keeping them in primer...sorry about your car - that really sucks!

Oh man, i have so many horror stories of non car people and the shit shows around here...

One hot day back last summer, there was a decent size show, about 10 minutes from my house. Its located on a main street of a BUSY town. Since theres never enough room , most of us park in this one big parking lot..
Well this parking lot, holds alot of cars, and enough room for the tiny kids(has a 20 by 100 lot with grass and shit)

We get at the show around 5 ish.. and by 6 the parking lot is FILLED, and some venders packed up with food, kid toys, and a live band
Well it turned out to be a decent show, but by 8 the band seemed to get ALOT of attention..
The bad luck was we parked only a few feet from the stage. With the LOUD music(major headache) and the people touching the car it was crazy. Untill this FAT ass lady walks over.. I mean FAT!(easy 400 lbs) she strolls over the car with her hand rubbing the whole side of our freshly painted primer..
Then she gets the nerve to sit on our front passenger fender!!!!!!!!!!!Who the fuck sits on some ones car.. specailly at a car show ! We walk over and start yelling at her, to get off.. She doesnt move one bit!!!

After about 2 minutes of her BS.. (ingoring us) He junped in the car..Turn on the engine with out pipes, and start reving up.. She still doesnt move! We told her, one last chance before we hit the pedal...
By that time everyone made a clearing for us. We hit the car in low made a tiny burn out and "gradually" released the brake...

You shoulda seen this fat ass broud in the air http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif She was stunded that we ment business... the crowd was laughn like you wouldnt belive. We left making a 100 foot burn out, with the chick on her fat ass, imbarrised for life..

Are you pulling my chain! sorry to hear about the scratch that really is a case of big chain & little brain!
i have a chain.....not a bigun just one to keep my wallet where i put it, but as said before anyone with any kind of respect would tuck it in or hold on to it when near someones wheels. That kind of respect should come natural to gearheads knowing what goes into our rides.

Jim, I dont know Roger Amos but I wish I could be as calm as him. ( although I am getting better with age )
I never actually had to punch somebody in the face over something like that, but I came really close a couple of times.
And not always about my car either, sometimes it was a Buddy's car, and I knew how much the thing ment to him.
And its not just chains, rivets and handbags.
Some of them will start to open doors and hoods, and get pissed off when you say something about it...
Why do people like that go to a carshow anyway?

Sorry to hear about the Merc.

If you have ever been around Merc50 and any of his cars
they are immaculate and very well kept. His "Perfect"
black Merc has remained in exceptional condition for many
years, it's a shame to hear of someones carelessness.

I guess I expect a little more from fellow car enthusiasts
than sitting on a strangers fender and fondling cars.

I watched half a dozen people I didn't know digging into my
cooler at the Kontinental club this weekend, not to mention
the pawing of my car and a pickup bed full of other peoples
garbage before the night was through.

I guess I should lower my expectations, that way I won't be
so dissapointed

Why clear coat compound? You said the car did'nt even have clear on it.I would just get some of the regular 3M compound and try just buffing it by hand. Then go with a buffer on it if you have too.Just depends on how deep the scratch is. You can follow up with some lighter glaze or polishing compound to take out any swirls after that.Just don't buff through it.

Mark probably has all kinds of stuff at his shop to try on it.

Dont let it get you down. We can always touch it up with some of that thick ass black paint he had over there. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We can also get you some nice 80's graphics down the side and cover it up as a second option. If your lucky Flt-Blk may have a little R. Magenta left over just for the project. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"You may be a redneck, if both your dog and your wallet are on a chain." - Jeff Foxworthy.

Years ago, I worked with an electrician who had been in the Seabees, stationed in the Phillipines. He said that you had to assume someone would try to pickpocket you when you went into town. he and his buddies would have a local tailor modify their jeans with a zipper under a two-button flap on the wallet pocket. Never lost his wallet.

I still hate the damn things...and I will never know what really happend...but Im working on fixing it the best I can but anyone who knows me knows how bumed I am. Maybe it is time to two tone the car or something...paint the top half white or something...photoshop op for someone? The scratch runs from the inside of the trim to the edge of the door and past the door several more inches heading to the back of the car all above the trim...stands out in the light really bad.

I've worn a chain for years and work in a Boyd Coddington style shop with more candy colors on it than a candy store. I have still yet to stratch a car other than my own (it's suede). If I'm looking in side a car/truck I always got a mind on where my chain is, shorter is better in this case. Put it in your pocket or keep a hand on it when walking next to on leaning over a nice car period!!

I still contend that ricky racer's Ute looks 100% better (and it was sweet before) after the "cover up" flames went on to disguise the keyed side panels..

So here an idea....Mettallic black flames with subtle edging...hiding the scratches and not changing the overall "darkness of the car".

Sucks thou...my chain is never out at car shows....my car is one thing..but someone elses....

Cheers

Maybe paint that panel Black (with pearl) with a white/cream pinstripe line continuing the trim line back over following the curved rear panel disguising a join between the two...

Well, worked on it some more and it is getting better...I guess. The small scratches all around the main one are mostly gone but a really thin long one just wont go away...if I drag my finger nail over it I can feel it catch is so I think that I am screwed on getting it out any more...at this point I think it might only really show in the direct sunlight kinda thing, but I know it is around still and it will drive me nuts. It is a short drive and I am a pussy about such things, and my THEM! bro Phil is right...you just can't have anything nice. we call em wallet chains... but nomenclature aside, i use one every day with my keys on one end and my wallet on the other. its stopped my wallet getting stolen at least once and me loosing my keys a gazillion times.

EVERYTIME i go near a car, i tuck the chain in my pocket. same if im sitting in somones car as the balls can leave marks on vinyl. its not a chain wallet issue its a respect issue.

I'm not a big fan of the wallets either. I'd need a logging chain for my George Castanza wallet.

If the color is scratched that sucks. Why not try dragging some black into the scratch with a touch up brush a la Bass.
Let it dry overnight, then lightly sand with some ultra fine paper and buff. The low place in the scratch will retain the brushed in paint.

Sorry to hear it and good luck.

i think i kinda know what you mean. i wore a wallet chain long time before they started popping up everywhere, not to be cool but to stop pricks stealing my wallet.

look man it comes down to the same old shit on this board - its not what people dress like, what they drive, what style of music they listen to, its whether they are a car person or not. a car person will tuck his chain. a non car person wont.

you can dress a non car person in cotton wool and he'll still find a way to fuck your car! ahaha

Merc50, sorry to hear about your merc. Like others have said some people have no respect at all. I never get that close to cars at a show, I do it out of respect for the owner, 'course that's probably why I miss alot of details. On your scratch, use a toothpick and fill it in, not level with the surface, build it up a little. Let it dry and go over(wet sand) with 1500 to 2000 grit paper. Then buff it out good. I took a course in Auto detailing and they said that anything you can catch with your finger nail you won't buff all the way out, so you will have to fill it in. I hope this helps you out. Now I have to decide wether to keep my chain or chuck it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif. later plmczy

tuck the chian in your pocket, thats just out of respect man..I do it every time I am around cars.. Its not fashion, its not wanting to loose my wallet for the 3rd time.

Since I moved my wallet to my front pocket about 8 years ago, I've never lost it.

Always wanted a knucklehead but so glad i ended up with a panhead, should hate to be riding around on a knobhead http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Back on the subject though, my old Chevy truck with old flat grey paint that i didn't have to worry about, just had some mindless twat run a permanent marker from front to back!!
It came off straight away with brake cleaner, but thats not the point it was intentional damage to my property & that fuckin winds me up.......just glad i didn't catch 'em red handed....i would be in serious trouble.

Well, to make a long story short and avoid too much drama rama I had to come home last night around midnight from the hospital (daughter is in) to take care of the dog that cost me 2 grand while I was at the Round Up (another long story, daughters puppy that unknown to us ate a toy back around Halloween that she got "trick or treating" and that had vanished and had caused intestinal blockage in the dog because it ate it...and when ever my kid would wake up for a few mins she would ask about her dog so we can't let anything happen to it!)

I was staying awake by the phone due to problems with my kid (really low blood pressure and she could not stay awake for more than a few mins and was causing the doctors to worry..so of course I was in panic mode)and since I could not sleep waiting by the phone for updates I washed my stang off that got covered in antifreeze from a car in front of me on the highway that I guess let a hose go and then I worked on the merc until about 3:15 AM. (I freakng needed something to do rather than just sit around waiting for a call to see if I needed to come back or not)

I almost got the thing where it is next to impossible to see except in strong light at the right angle. The deepest thin lines of it will always be around but I can live with it now (I guess http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif).

I got the students watching a movie on Zimbabwe (and they are grossing out on the boiled worms and peanut butter meal the guy is getting to eat in a village right now) and about to pass out...but the good news is the scratch is gonna work out okay and the best news is the kid is okay now...man, what a night. My wife kept telling me not to come back up since she was getting better as the night went on but it was a "I wanted to anyway" kind of thing. From what my wife said it was like someone flipped a switch on my kid around 1:15 AM and she was wide awake (but in pain) and doing well...she should come home this morning.

Guess I am a true HAMB drama queen now...who ha!

That is outstanding news!!! Makes the scratch seem like no biggie, don't it? Tell Little Miss Vicky that her Uncle Buzz is thinkin' about her. I can't wait to get up there and play Pollie Pockets with her. And see her drive her car.

Just spent about $1500 on Lulu in the last two weeks. And now she has to see a dermatologist. All for the pitbull that I never wanted in the first place.

Yep, still in Texas, not sure when I'm going back yet, possibly Sunday or Monday. We'll see. All of OCP's big shit has been moved, just odds and ends at this point. I want to get back for the Marti Brom show in PHX on Tuesday.

Can I hear a few more "functional" arguments for wallet chains. . . they really make me laugh.

What's so humiliating about wearing something because you think it looks cool?
