I've got several new things right now.

fun fun.

First up is a tiki I recently painted. I'm using a new technique. I'm going for that SHAG/60's illustrationish look. Maybe I'm doing o.k. maybe not.

So this Week in Automotive art History..I bring you Andy Virgil....

Andy Virgil was a highly sought after and prolific illustrator during the 50's.60's and 70's.
He worked at a few large studios in the NYC area and painting race cars was a passion. He nearly got killed one year at Indy..when shooting ref. on race day,he was narrowly missed in the pits by a racer speeding in for tires.

A passion for his craft.....he was a very good jazz trumpeter that was taught by Maynard Ferguson.A major dispute with his studio boss came to blows one day over money in the early 70's and the agent ruined his career by bad mouthing and slander.

Andy died of cancer in 1980.

I give you Andy Virgil.........

Here's some more of my work.
Here's a mad bomber dog.

Title: "Mad Dog Parsons".

I knew a guy back home with that name. He was about as round....and about as good looking.

Maybe slightly less menacing. :D

Will do my duty to fulfill my obligations to the rules. Apologies for any percieved past indiscretions, (if any were detected.)
Yellow people have been preventing me from finishing some of my larger projects on paper so here's a few I used my computer to assist in finishing.

I sent a copy of this to an Army captain serving in Iraq a few years back. This was done in prisma color, scanned and enhanced w/ Photoshop.

Whoop! been waiting for this...had a little trouble with posting but after a quick kick to the brain by brush i'm now on track! haha

ok first is two versions of my buick roadmaster custom! blue/black suede paint, slammed, moon discs, shoebox-buick custom grille using parts from both, bonnet(hood) reshaped to match grille and buick bonnet(hood) lines reworked to suit..lower bumper valance has been smoothed and now has a neat rolled bead to mirror the bonnet and surround the licence plate! pinstriping, tuck and roll, and shaved trim finish it off!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/joedirt/roadmaster-blue.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/joedirt/roadmaster-black-suede.jpg

next up...got my finger out and actually painted a small canvas using acrylics and a not so small brush! was inspired by all the real painting going on here so thought i'd join in..crap photo but still....sled!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/joedirt/PICT0148.jpg

last, two versions of my latest rod rendering!, this is my kind of rod, and my kind of rendering. for my work most people ask me to produce really neat polished renderings like the buick above but they feel a little soul-less to me...these two are based on some fairly scruffy ink work and neaten'd up just enough using the airbrush tools and my tablet/lightpen in photoshop!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/joedirt/rod-red-ox.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/joedirt/rod-kahki.jpg

hope you like em! :)

Tingler, that stuff is fantastic! I love the way those new Tiki things look.
Django, your work looks great.
Brush, thanks for keeping us in line.

Here's one I posted on "pictures of you and your car." followed by an older Photoshop illust. of my car in it's current Red and "what would it look like in yellow." It's based on a thumbnail sketch I did on a post-it.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m45/jigger_01/PONCH.jpg

And finally, A buddy of mine (the guy I bought the Ponch from) bought a '53 Crestline HT a few years back and this was one of my suggestions on what to do with it. He didn't.

Brush-- if the billet in these is too O/T, LMK and I'll trash them. (It's not something I like, but it was a paying gig!)

These were done a few years ago as concepts for a car that may yet someday get finished. (I think it's 25% done, and pretty much for sale now.) Anyhoo, couple variations on a 37 Chevy. Top one is watercolor + graphite (and a few touches og gouache) on Arches watercolor paper. Bottom one is prismacolor on butcher paper.

This was inspired by the car advertising found in most mags of the period
its a 53-54 Willys, a what if car if you will....what if you lower the
entire car, nose and deck it, what if you add fender skirts and then mold
them in to the quarters, remove the Willys trade mark Caddy like fins
on the top of the quarters, make a 3 window coupe...What if Willys had and really produced it, would they still be going today....words to ponder friends, words to ponder.

Heres one I did for my Dad who used to run Oxnard Radiator.
Did this as a fathers day present for him. He has and still does alot of
custom radiators for classics and Hot Rod type cars. He is one of those
true craftsmen. Since childhood I remember people coming from all over the
U.S. to have him do work. Some of you may have met up with him.

Kick ass thread this week. I like seeing the more commercial stuff for a change. It's nice to see how our choice of art works it's way into the public genré.

havent painted anything in a while, but RustyRedRam who happens to be a high school teacher called me and asked if i'd do his podium....

this was a challenge because its old, 'textured', and it was painted with a roller. i think it came out pretty nice.

his only 'demands' were spider webs in the corners (I HATE pinstriped spiderwebs, but he's a good buddy) and fleuer de lis on the front.

i went outside my box to do the scroll and flair stuff, and i think the center piece on the top is dead on. it think it exemplifies my 'style' when i'm left to the quiet of my work space...

C&C welcome.
enjoy.

You guys amaze me. Here is one I drew for my buddy Dave. He got rid of his late seventies Chevy Crew Cab and bought a '65 F250. He originally wanted a apple green primer, but has now decided to go black primer and red wheels...

Brush,

I love that you are going back and looking up these older artists.

Andy Virgil - that's nice man...

It occurs to me that he was breaking a lot of rules there. Well not rules perse, but if you look at the majority of our frequent posters (yourself included), you see very little "human element". Andy put the man with the machine - you get much more mood that way...a feeling of passion.

Love it.

I am licking my chops for next weeks lesson.

Maybe I will be able to put up some art by then. We'll see - I am very busy at work and I have kinda been holding out for an exceptional Friday Art post...(which is the excuse I keep using to explain why I haven't finished it up yet :) )

...and not to shit in anyone's Cheerios, but I don't get the hot rod Jeeps. I just don't...

...good art, good artists, bad rod.

And I bet that Citroen would ride like old people fuck...stiff and creaky.

Agreed.

Everyone is encouraged to post art here. Nobody gets made fun of in the Art Show.

We are all very supportive here.

(at least usually) :D

It's Sunday, I know, but I've been gone a couple days and just wanted to check in. Locab, "Same?" "old?" "boring?" I was thinking Energetic! Prolific! Encouraging!

Brush,
You guys have been very welcoming. I appreciate any comments on my work, weather people like it or not. Metal sharpens metal and the best way to break into new territories, sometimes, can be the negative critisism; as long as it's CONSTRUCTIVE not cruel. I love having an outlet where I can get car lover's opinions "worldwide."
Great show this week, can't wait for the next one.

Broman,
Thanks for the verbal image, where's my Listerine?
