View Full Version : Lonestar Round-Up in Review
Best car show in the country held by the nicest bunch of guys in Texas. Make no bones about it - the Lonestar Round-Up is a large national show now (3 to 400 cars?), but the Kontinentals know how to handle numbers and everyone still left with a very personal feeling. I can not say enough about these guys or this show...
My wife and I got there Friday night and were greeted by perferct weather and old friends. We stayed at the San Jose (RAD RAD RAD) and hung out at the Kontinental Club all night... Heard some great tunes, drank some cold beer, and talked with good pals. Absolutely perfect evening capped off by Kontinental Reggie asking me to drive his flathead powered 32-5w to the show the next morning...
And the drive was pretty much how you dream any REAL flathead powered hot rod drive should be. I'm still on cloud nine... More on that later.
The show itself is how it should be - more friends, more music, and more beer... BUT the cars were just amazing this year - I'm sure you've already seen pics and I'll let those (along with some artsy ones from me) tell that story.
Thank you Kontinentals for the best time I've had in a long time. I owe you all a great deal of gratitude for just being the way you all are and doing what you do. I can't say enough about all of you. I am simply blown away.

I mentioned Reggie letting me drive one of his 32's to the show on Saturday. Well, when it came time to give out the HAMB award I was real conflicted. On one side, this car I just drove was my favorite car at the show... On the other, I just drove it in myself and that looks, well.... Anyways, I asked ElJefe for advice and he set me straight. Reggie's 32-5w got the award.

Welcome to Tejas!
Love those pics, especially that of Crease's Huey helicopter seats with bass boat inserts. They look great.
Reggies award was well deserved. Glad to see you were able to have your name on it.

Ryan thanks for being part of the show.It was great getting to hang out a little bit w/ you and your wife. And on behalf of the Kontinentals, I would personally like to thank everyone for making the trip and the experience so memorable for all of us. It wouldn't be a show w/o all the cars. There was some jaw dropping stuff again this year as you can see from the many pics. I also want to thank all my fellow Kontinentals for all their efforts and hard work. It does not go by unnoticed. Hopefully, no one got too upset w/ the closeness of cars on Sat at the park. It was just kinda tough to judge where we gonna wind up while trying to get everybody in. More real estate next year for parking at the park. I thought the awards came off perfectly. There was some really tough choices to be made by those who got to pick, but I think in the end it was alot of everyone's favorites that walk away w/ the trophies.
Below is a list of the awards and winners. If anyone can match up the pics w/ the awards try and do that. I didn't have a camera much less time to take some shots but I think the pic are around. Here goes:
HOP UP Award: '56 Black Merc- Laura Matthews(Austin)
CUSTOM RODDER Award: Watson Inspired '53 Chevy-Aaron Labato(N.M.)
LEE PRATT Award: Copper '54 Ford Truck-Keith Tucker(Calif)
KENNEDY BROS Award: Black '32 Ford 5W-Jim Goodbar(Texas)
KEITH WEESNER Award:Red Oxide '32 Ford 3W-Gary Thomas(Texas)
GARY HOWARD Award: Tan '50 Ford Coupe-Darryl Dudley(Texas)
PETE & JAKE Award: Cream '36 Ford Roadster-Wayne Davis(Texas)
VON FRANCO Award: Purple '32 Ford Roadster(Kennedy Bros Built)-Jim Jard (Houston)
NORM GRABOWSKI Award: Black '36 Ford 3W- Billy F Gibbons
HAMB Award: Brown '32 Ford 5W - Reggie Hill(fellow Kontinental from just outsude of Austin)
KONTINENTALS' Award: '32 Bluegreen Ford Roadster-Bob Bleed(whereabouts unknown)
We want to thank all the guys above for helping us w/ the awards and Bigun for fabbing the awesome trophies. Did anyone get a pic of the trophies?
My favorite part of the weekend....w/o a doubt the scene on S. Congress Fri and Sat night and the sound of open headers roaring up and down that street all thoughout both evenings. It was like a dream come true for me that I awoke from today cuz tonight(Sun) its all back to abnormal. Was it a dream? My mind says yes.....my feet say no. Mucho Gracias to everyone that came in and was a part of LSRU'04.

Great to see you and the missus again Ryan - and everyone else who came to the show - we are blown away with the amount of folks and cars who decided to come visit us here and enjoy a great weekend. Thanks to all of ya'll for inspiring us - and a big thanks to El Jefe, Willie B for helping make this thing possible and all my brother Kontinentals for being great hosts and friends. I'm just now going thru some of the posts here and seeing some great shots and stories - too cool.
It is a weird thing to get used to seeing all the hop ups and kustoms all up and down Congress all weekend - I got used to it too - and now I have to take off this morning for work - driving down Congress isn't quite the same - but I walk out to my caddy and see the fresh stripes by Franco on the decklid (laid out while I had to run and get registration started) and I know it wasn't just a dream
more pictures to follow - official Kontinentals photographer George Brainard was shooting all weekend - said he took 1,134 photos and we'll get those up soon - in the meantime - post more Ryan! those look great!

Man guys I promise not to miss the next one....we had family in ICU so we had to pass. We will be cruising the Fleetline next year hopefully. Is this park gonna be big enough to hold all the cars next year?
Wow...what a show, and what awesome people.
I was running on empty for Friday night since I'd stayed up until 3:30 AM every night last week trying to get my Triumph project finished (which still didn't quite happen, but I brought it anyway...more on that later)....but I wouldn't have traded the last few days for anything.
It was great to see my Texas extended hot rod family again, as well as meet a bunch of rad new people...Jimmy White (ruler!), Aaron from Albuquerque, Reggie of the Kontinentals, Dean from Dice Magazine, the HAMB's own Ryan, and the list goes on...
The shoebox gave me some shit on Sunday morning (shifter is worn out...I wonder why http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ), but I think maybe my car just didn't want to leave Austin. I managed to get 3rd, 4th and Reverse to somewhat work and got it home though. Thanks to Honest Charley, Flt-Blk, Deyomatic, Old Car Pilot, Buzzard, Big Ric, Kevin and Kenny for helping me get it sorted out enough to get it home. And thanks to Outlaw for the hospitality.
The Triumph got a pretty good reaction, which made all the hard work and lack of sleep worthwhile. Thanks to the Kontinentals for allowing me to bring one of only a handful of bikes into the show....and for putting on what has become what I believe is the best show in the nation.
You know I'll be back next year.

What a great time! Thank you Ryan for the HAMB. The Roundup would have never happened the way it did, three years ago. And now it's snowballing into a big deal.
Friday and Saturday nights of the Roundup and the Drags on South Congress are just about genius to me. It's like being in our own hot rod movie. Kick ass bands playing in the club, bitchin' cars parked up and down the street, cruisin', burnouts, and me drinkin' beer out by the dumpster with the hoodlums.
It's stinks that we can't do it every weekend!!! I'm sitting at work having withdrawls.
Thanks so much to all of ya'll that made it down. We rent the park, but ya'll make it a show. I can't believe how many people drove from so far away. Just to come to our little corner of the hot rod world.
Honest

Thats It, I cant wait any longer. I am moving back to Texas. It may be a couple of years, but the wife and I will be outa here, as soon as the kids are a little older. I love it down there. It looks like you guys have a real good thing down there, congrats Kontinentals for now having one of if not the best car show around. I will be down next year for sure..
If I had to pick my favorite car of the weekend, it would have to be the red oxide Deuce 3W that won the Keith Weesner award. That thing won me over hands down...everywhere you looked it had some neat little detail that set it apart.
That's it in the first photo at the top...did anyone get a another good pic of it?
Bass, actually I took 47 pictures of that car alone... I will post them when I get home tonight...
Awesome...thanks, Ryan.

I know, I am breaking some rules here because, I have not done an Itro. yet. I will after more coffee. I built this car in 45 days of none stop thrashing, 8am till..... the wife calls... everyday. Did Reggie recently buy that car from a guy in SC. It looks just like a local car that was sold to a guy in Tex. Flew in and drove it home. It was a 32 5W with a flattie in brown primer. If it is the same car it rocks. Hated to see the local guy sell it. It was the coolest car in SC.

Ryan, thought you'd be taller...
Gotta speak up for the "Moe" character. That's Morgan Rowe in Johnson City, just outside of Austin. He's a new convert to American Hot Rods and really did throw that straight six powered modified together in just a few weeks. I think he started working on it the day after Valentine's day. No hassling him. He's a builder type person that isn't afraid to try anything.
Sooooo many people at the show! I was amazed at the number of out-of-towners and the huge number of HAMBers. I had to cut out Saturday evening, but still had a ball.

Ryan, you driving my car made my day more than you can imagine. It was perfect watching you and the missus drive off in it. You have NO IDEA how good that felt. After all, the leader of the HAMB can't drive to our meet in a Rental. It won't happen as long as I'm around.
And man, I'm still floored that you picked my car! I really, really didn't expect it. I was standing up talking to the famous Jim "Jake" Jacobs and clapping when my name was called. I heard it, but it didn't register until he said "I think they are calling you!" What a day! Right up there with my wedding and the birth of my sons. Thank you!
El Jeffe, all of this happened on the anniversary of me being tapped as a Kontinental. Thank you man....for bringing me out of the hotrod closet. Until then, I had only participated in only 1 car show....and that was the first roundup.
Kontinental brothers, you rock!! I can only think of one guy that didn't enjoy himself (and he almost caught a punch). But that's ok....399 out of 400 happy hot rodders is a hell-uv-a batting average.

You just frickin rock! I swear you've got the best damn attitude ever.
Sandman,
As usual had a blast hangin with you and your lovely wife. Can we do it again next weekend? Not sure how you've lived here for 6 months and know more people than I do, but I'll just accept it.
Nailhead 60,
Your just plain cool. It was great to get to know you a little better.
Hank Cash,
Great to finally meet you.
30Roadster,
Where the hell were you?
Foiled,
It was great meeting you.
Buzzard, Krupanut, Fat Luckys, EvilFordCoupe and all my brothers in the club, you guys did it again. Cant thank you enough.

If you look close at the drivers side front you can see a bolt holding the shackle for the 1/4 elliptic ... mounted upside down. So hitting a bump puts the spring in stretch rather than compression http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Seems like an interesting reversal of physics http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I suspect the rear end is mounted the same way.
Just a guess ....

You owe me a new pair of underwear. Your kickin my ass at the drags with or without those skinny ass tires. Unless of course........... Now I can tear my car down and ride around in yours for a while.

Crease,
You talked far too much trash to tear it down and up-grade for the drags. I think that car just feels fast w/o a windsheild and being so low to the ground.
Ryan,
Your photos are art. I generally don't say that about photography, but you do have a knack for capturing the essence of a hot rod and finding the details that most would miss.

That is HUGE coming from AntiC! Personally...I respect the hell outta anyone that takes a pic that's in focus, doesn't have flash spots, and isn't at a screwy angel just to avoid the previous 2 things I mentioned.

Anyone can be an "artist" with a macro lense. I'm not an artist... I just have a nice camera. I took lots of shots with the macro just cause that's how I look at cars after awhile... scanning for details and what not... Course now I'm sitting here wondering where all my shots of the full car are. Quite frustrating really...
Reggie, you have no idea how much you made me smile on Saturday. I've driven some pretty insane cars in my life... some real insane cars... I think that 3 or so miles to the park and back might have been some of my favorite miles ever...

I had a blast at this years Roundup, not suprising really. Sorry I didn't get to meet you Ryan, I'm sure I walked past you a couple of times, just never realized it was you.
Glad to have met everyone I did have a chance to and finally put some faces to some HAMB names.
Magnet- hope you aren't completely fried from our scorching 80 degree weather http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Bobbleed- I kick myself for not getting a CD while I had the chance, but my wallet was running on empty at the time. Send me a PM if I can order one from you.

Ryan I can't beleive thats just a nice camera makeing those look so great. The eye that looks through it is what makes a great shot.
Foiled, I also got a little flack comeing into the park with my car. It was actually a guy before the gate.I showed him my registration and told him I had already been cleared by the Kontinentals for attending. He was still trying to be a hard ass and then finally told me to take it up with the guy at the gate. That was the last word about it that I heard.
Hopefully that will be my last Roundup in the wagon and I am trying to set a goal to have the 30 down there next year.

Those mid '60's chevy trucks made it in, even the one with the 20" wheels. Made me think my car could have gotten in, but I knew it would be out of place even if I did have a pass...there are exceptions to every rule but that truck??? Some of the street rods (t-bucket that wouldn't start that the guy was trying to hock) I definately wouldn't have missed. There was better quality control last year, but there were more cars this year...guess it's a tradeoff.

Ryan-
It was nice to meet you...
I know what you are saying about all of the close shots and not too many of full cars....
I think that has alot to do with how close together everyone was parked.
I had a great time!
When the Round-up is over, it's like going back to 3rd grade after Spring break, AND IT SUCKS!

Sorry about that guys, with the size this thing has gotten we had to hire some non-Kontinental event staff to work the outer gate, that did not know about the VIP execptions.
All these guys knew was pre 1963 and we forgot to tell them Phils wagon is always a welcome adition.
We try our best to be as inclusive as possible and yes there were some F%$kin' murdered mercs, dicusting T buckets, and WTF wheels. We might need to get alittle more selective in the future but we just want to have fun.
We only had one total ass hole all weekend, guy with a 57 chevy restro (go figure that one http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif) got all bent outta place about where he had to park. Dude about got put down by Reggie. He's not invited back.

i didnt have a pass for the continental club friday night but figured i might be able to have a beer and bail. the guy at the door was pretty damn nice and told me that there was a certain amount sold and if it wasnt filled to capacity, i could come back... he didnt have to explain anything, he could have just told me to get lost.
gotta admit, i didnt know what to say but thanks... im use to doormen being pricks. this guy was cool about it, and was even smiling.
made it back alive, not much worse for the wear...
met some great people and new friends, and some old. one of the best times i've had at a show.
sent my bike home with its new owner, 38Chevy454 (terry), to terrorize the west coast, and brought home a new project, terry's supercharged 63 riviera that used to be stoners...this is gonna be a fun project!
gotta say big ups to Bud's Bike shop, not too far from the happenings, El Jefe' sent me there to look for parts to diagnose a no start problem after the trip down, they were nice enough to let me try out a new coil aganst my old one, and would accept no money when i bought nothing even as i insisted for the bother, thanks!
and thanks terry for letting a bunch of US share your room!
plan9...i got yo pics, none i can share of the primer 3 winder on the hamb, ryan is in all of em! haha BUT i DO got them ORCA pics! i'm counting them, and they better ALL be posted! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey Krupanut, I was'nt sweating it about getting in. I knew the guy just did'nt know. I just thought I'd tell my story so Foiled would'nt think he was singeled out and getting picked on.
I do hope to be in the other car next year though.

I'm still crackin' up over your business card Jason.
Got home last night (Late!) It was a pleasure to meet so many HAMBers and even got to meet Ryan for the first time. Show was great. Want to thank everybody for the hospitality. And yes, it was a long drive in Little D's truck, but nothing compared to John Beaty's T-roadster. Here are some pics from the trip home

Wow, great pics and I'm still in recovery. 1720 miles in 2 days. I think I may be the luckiest HAMB'er right now as I now have a bitchin Triumph that needs nothing and traded Ray a car that needs work. I may not have had one of my hot rods at the show, but Austin was a great place to meet up and trade. Next year I'll have one of my cars for sure. This was my third year and the Kontinentals pulled off another great show, my compliments on a job well done. You guys work hard to put on a show that is worth driving 1720 miles to get to.
Thanks to plan9, Ray and Brewsir for the great weekend hanging out with you guys. Especially plan9 who I talked into going last minute and helped me with driving. Next year we'll road trip again.

I cannot believe that the bike was for sale. I stood around it all Friday night waiting to meet Ray. It's one of, if not the, coolest bikes I've ever seen. I kidded with my wife that I was waiting around to buy it.
Thanks for making the huge journey back to Texas. Bring your truck next year so you can haul the bike with you.

cool cars, cold beer, and half naked ladies. "life was good!".............A big thanks goes out to the Kontinentals for all the fun............And another big thanks to smitty for all your help. The wild indian wouldn't have made it with out your help bro.
haha, i thought i was the luckiest guy in the whole world! c'mon terry, don't say that bike don't need nothin! its still got some detail stuff to work out, i know, i'm prolly my worst critic.
buzzard, thanks for the nice words on the bike, it hadn't exactly been for sale, i built it for myself the way i wanted, if i was ever to sell it, it was supposed to get some decent money...but i had been lusting after this riviera since stoner had it. and now its mine mwahahaha! actually a good trade for both parties involved, i think all things considered.
you guys make it hard to stay humble!

Monica's already said we will be home in Austin for the Round-up every year....and who's going to say no to that. Dallas and Nate are still in shock....its either from the show or all the Bar-B-Q we ate. Met a lot of Kool Kats and finally got to meet the man behind the Hamb...see you all next year.
