i picked up a 283 today. block numbers are 3789935. the heads are power pack, numbers 3795896.
the book i have says the block was cast 58-61. i believe the book has a typo, it's very confusing when it states maximum overbore.
can this block take an .125 over safely? i'll keep the stroke the same and end up with 301 cubes. if i can go this route, what piston should i use? i'm worried about compression ratio with these heads.
i know bobble ed is spertin 301 cubes in his beautiful roadster. i have a 6x2 intake, cal custom stuff to make it purty and i'm finally gonna put the headers i picked up from hotrodjosh to use.

Rick, I alwasy use the stamped numbers to decipher engine id on sbc's. I'll look it up for you if you can gimmee the stamped number on the right front of the block just in front of the right cylinder head.
Any 283 of 62 and newer vintage has the meat you desire for your overbore. Chevy used the same damn block for 283's and 327's after '62, the first year of the 327. I bored my 1967 block .125 and had it sonic tested....passed ok. I was lucky enough to find a good used set of factory DZ [Z-28, 302 chevy] pistons but they were 12.5 to 1. Had my machinist mill off enough of the dome to give me 10 to one and had every reciprocating part balanced...
HOOCHIE MAMA! That sucker would run!
I had a recent listing of piston part numbers for currrently available 301 pistons but I've misplaced it, sorry. I'd be interested in having those numbers again as I have one, lonely remaining '63, 283 engine [steel crank] that's crying for a .125" overbore.
Don't forget to score the 327 "cloverleaf" small journal rods for your 301. Install arp rod bolts. When I built my last one, P.A.W. sold those rods with the good bolts outa their catalogue. I think I paid $176 for mine, delivered to my door.

rocky, i got those numbers for you. i have the motor sitting at a friends house. the only way i can unload anything at my place is with a chain fall and at the moment, i can't back up close enough to it.
why am i telling you this? the 283 is bolted to a engine stand the guy picked up when he used to work at nichels around the early seventies. kinda fun to wonder what hemi nascar or indy motor they had bolted to it long ago.
anyways, the number stamped in front of the right head is F0830D. thanks for looking it up and all the other info. i sure would like the list of pistons if you or anyone else come across it.
thanks again, rick
