THIS IS SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN BUGGING ME FOR A LONG TIME, MAYBE WE CAN GET A CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGUE GOING ON THIS...
IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF THE FOLKS ON HERE TAKE OFFENSE TO THE TERM "RAT ROD", BUT IF YOU LOOK UP THE WORDS "JALOPY" AND "HOKEY" IN ANY DICTIONARY, THEY ARE REALLY NO BETTER, Is it any surprise that people are using this term? This is bound to be controversial but....OK .......HERE IT COMES.......
HOW ABOUT:
HOTRODDING ARCHIVES MESSAGE BOARD or (Hotrodders)...............OR
Historic Automobile Message Board.

I mean, there has got to be at least a hundred better names that would do justice to this hobby we all know and love. Anyone else want to chime in?

THIS IS FROM DICTIONARY.COM

n. Informa. pl. ja·lop·ies An old, dilapidated motor vehicle, especially an automobile.[Origin unknown.]

jalopy
n : a car that is old and unreliable; "the fenders had fallen off that old bus" [syn: bus (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=bus), heap (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=heap)]

Although most of the entries in the dictionaries for "Jalopy" have negative connotations, I would argue that the public in general would not define it exactly as it is in the dictionary. I think a lot of people look on them with nostalgia and respect for the ingenuity that went (goes) into them, and not neccessarily the same as a "hooptie" or "bucket" or P.O.S. or whatever you want to call them.

Yeah, I think we should do it!!! We should change what H.A.M.B. stands for!

And speaking of stoplights, ;) I think it's Hokey that they are red, yellow and GREEN.

I mean, come on! Green isn't even a primary color and since so many people are red/green colorblind anyway I think they should be red, yellow and BLUE.

I think we should start changing them the world over. In fact, I'm gonna start doing it myself tonight. I'm in Texas and these people don't seem to know what the lights are for anyway.......

But seriously now, this isn't/wasn't a discussion about rat rods or name changes. Leave the redirection of threads to the professionals... :D

...well thats why i didn't put it in general discussion. It is in the suggestions area.
I was giving a serious suggestion. If you read my thread, its saying that i would not want to change jalopy at all but, hokey sounds, well pretty hokey. the info on this board is anything but that. Theres some good stuff on here, hence "hotrodders archive message board" or something like that. So take it as sort of a compliment.
this way the acronym stays the same and its still called the HAMB and its not Hokey. The "jalopy Journal" is pretty much set in stone, it is what it is. and its a cool name, but the message board is only just one part of it.
Yes I know I just joined (finally) it took me a long time lurking etc, but this is something I always wondered about and frankly bugged me.
Also keep in mind, I did not start this thread or a new thread saying..."HEY LETS CHANGE THE NAME!"

"If someone has been hitting you on the head with a hammer for 2 years, and eventually you get used to it, does that mean you should keep letting them do it, just because you are used to it?" Leykis

I understand what you are saying Rash, but its not as if im proposing world peace.

If you are gonna let someone hit you in the head until you get used to it you have bigger worries than the name of this board.

as a noob, I need to say that I am a bit jaded by other message boards, and the name is part of why I stopped in here. If a board can poke fun at itself, it's cool by me. I only frequent 2 or 3 others, because most boards are wankfests. Party on, hoke-masters.

You... I like!

"Hokey-Ass" is kinda like "Jive-Turkey" or "Fuckin-A"... look them up, they really don't mean shit in the dictionary together... but they work.

Go build somethin and step away from the dictionary website.

I damn neart swallowed my gum....I can't even imagine changing the HAMB to something else. The name, "Hokey ass message board" drew me in the first time I saw it. I already knew it was for me and I was right. I totally love the look on my [midwesterner Catholic] wife's face when I speak of the Hokey ass message board.
It mimics the look I get from the guys at work when I try to explain it to them. It's the same look I got driving my ratty-ass 33 ford pickup around town...priceless! No, we can't get politically correct or we lose the "flavor" of our dearly beloved board. Even the name is a direct reflection of us and our attitudes. I don't usually try to speak for others but in this case I feel pretty safe in saying I speak for the majority of HAMBers when I say these things and I've spent a lot of time with a lot of HAMBers.....
Hokey Ass Message Board......great name and I pray Germ doesn't see this thread.

Ollin,

As Popeye said, "I'm what I'm" nothing more and nothing less. This says it well for the meaning of HAMB it works beside its just a title and nothing more.

Be Cool and get on the Honkey ass train, you'll love it.

comment was not made for the sake of being politically correct. did you read any of what I wrote? I just felt that the name is not fitting for the quality of information and content on this board. There is a lot of bad ass-well engineered cars and quality tech articles. Its an opinion. we are all entitled to them here so get over it man.

I suppose there are lots of great things that have unfitting names.

Like the chevy Nova= which translates to "doesn't go" or "Osco Drug stores"=which translates as a nauseating feeling. Or better still, the "ford probe", who wants to get rear ended by a ford probe!? not me.
"ass train"? sounds nasty ...ughhhh! haha
