Thanks Grimlok.
The Chrisman Coupe is one of my 3 all time favorite Hot Rods.
When I had the chance to buy a couple of '40 hoods I snapped them up, just in case...
On the windshield height question, I have been told that legal minimum is 6" ( My Roadster is 6 1/8"), But I think legal minimum for LSR was 7"

Aw man, I've almost got all of my coupe panels rounded up now. Lacking a decklid and the panel below it. I had originally planned a sedan that would mimic the Chrisman Coupe's style (search for a thread of mine called "Bonneville pipedream" or something similar) but that plan fell to the side and now I almost have a complete coupe to assemble and chop. A couple of '40 Deluxe hoods would be ideal but I imagine I'll end up having to make due with something else.

So you are thinking about building a car like that?
I would love to see a street driven version of that...
How would you cool it? ( cutting holes in that nose would fuck up the lines )
Front engine or rear?
Radiator in the back maybe?
Or go air cooled...
And maybe not metallic brown... but other than that, HELL YEAH!!!

The plan was to build a car that could race at Bonneville and do double duty at the drag strip. Not so sure about making it street driven too. Overall performance would probably be compromised enough already. Particulars of the engine and drivetrain are foggy at best. Definitely front engine though. Ever seen the Robt. Williams painting with the chopped sedan that had '40 hoods? I've got a lot of ideas floating around and I'm just collecting pieces right now. Later this year I'll make a decision and start. It's possible that the coupe body will see a little time on the street before it's a dedicated race car though.

Hey Tim.. here's a link to some pics of my heep. My 5 window has a 8 inch chop and I drive it DAILY. The "hot rod" law here in Utah states "a pre 1949 vehicle can be 'chopped', 'channeled' or otherwise modified from it's original appearance. Fenders, hood, engine cover and bumpers are optional. Side pipes are permited." Thats it. Thats all it says! I am a certified state vehicle inspector, and as I read the law, it leaves the windshield height wide open. I haven't got any poop from the Highway Patrol yet (knock on wood). I don't know what the law is in all of your guy's states, but Utah's law is JUST RIGHT!
There are some pics of it on this link:

Hope this helps.

is there anywhere online you can look up the laws as they pertain to customizing from state to state? I'm just curious as to what they are for here and other states as well.
California has their vehicle code on the net. (Search for DMV.)
I believe Arizona does as well. (For them you have to search for MVD.)

Ever see the radiator setup in the military Hummer?
Something along those lines should work ok.
Even if you didn't copy the Hummers radiator setup, a radiator leaned forward at the top - say 45 degrees? - and fit with electric fan/fans should draw air in from the underside and cool ok.
Just needs a little thinking about airflow.

That's the look Kulturepimp was going for with his truck. He could tell you about cooling.

You would still need to get some air in the front to carry away the exhaust heat,
otherwise you will start melting plug wires etc.
