And the VERY last one for tonight fresh outta the shop;the paint is still wet.No more until tomorrow when I start on a 1936 NJ plate for an old friend.I hope I scaled the dimensions properly as it's an odd size(5 1/2X 11).Stay tuned.

Well it's Saturday and I just finished my project for today. It's a reproduction of a 1936 New Jersey license plate for my friend Glenn.
A little story behind this one:
Glenn and I were stationed in Jacksonville Florida together in 1965 going to Ordnance school. We hadn't seen or talked to one another since June of 65 when we went our separate ways;me to the NATC in Maryland to work testing new weapons systems and Glenn to a patrol squadron on the Phillipines to do ASW duty in the South China Sea.
While reading the 2nd issue of Ol Skool Rodz I noticed a letter to the editor from Glenn. The age seemed about right and his last name isn't exactly a common one,so after trying in vain to contact the magazine,I used Yahoo search and got a number.
Called and his wife answered. She confirmed that I had the right person and promised to tell him as he was at work at the time.
Got a call from him that night and his mind was blown. He hadn't heard from anybody he was stationed with since he got out in 67.We talked old times for awhile and have been corresponding ever since. He owns a couple street rods including a primed 36 coupe with turqouise steelies and a chopped 41 Chevy sedan. He does custom upholstery on the side as well.We are going to get tobether this September when we head out East for our annual trek to Massachusetts.
I figured I'd surprise him with this plate for his car.I don't think he'll be reading this because he doesn't do computers, but if anyone on this board knows him, keep it quiet!
Long story but here's the result:

Ray, That is a great way to renew an old friendship. I'm sure he will appreciate it.
BTW, Do you remember when we weren't neighbors in 1957 in New Oreleans? Neither do I, but that shouldn't keep you from doing a plate for me. That FAB32 vanity plate I didn't have back then would be a good one to duplicate. HAHA!!!

Ray, If you are looking for a LA plate I was refering to the MI vanity plate that I didn't have. I'm sure you remember the one, when we weren't neighbors and I hadn't reregistered my car in Louisiana. How could you forget when this didn't happen, it was 1962.

Hey Frank:
I didn't look up the 1957 LA plates and I didn't find out they were PURPLE with EASTER EGG YELLOW numbers(!)and there wasn't a pelican in the middle. Is this the one you weren't talking about?Or was it the 1962 MI vanity plate that you weren't talking about? Okay, so do you own a plate printing press? Can you do any state like CA circa 1930? How do you make these plates, they are great! They truly look real.
(sorry if these questions have already been covered but inquiring minds want to know)

It is in the TechOmatic.

DAAMMMMN, that is wayy cool. I wish I had a steady enough hand for that shit. I like the amount of creativity that went into it but to tell the truth I was really hoping he had a press and some dies.

No press Jesse. The plates are cut from thin sheet aluminum(I never miked it so I don't know the thickness)cut with a pair of shears, the holes drilled, and the plate rattlecanned. Then they are lettered using shades to obtain the dimensional effect.I get the pictures of the plates from a website(the plate shack I think the name of it is)and figure the dimensions of the numbers, etc.
Here are my two latest ones:the first is for a friend of mine in Maine and the second is for my wife's Thunderbird. The 'Bird plate is painted the same color as the car.

damn Ray, these things are dangerous. Throw a frame and some lexan over that, and I'd be tempted to run one full time...

Especially on a 50s-60s car where the sits down inside the bumper.

Thats what I was thinkin, at least for the front because in Cali it's state law to run a front plate. I just need a cool enough car to run one is all.

Those are sooo damn cool. I'm gonna have to give er' a try sometime. One thing, though, is that most sign shops will have premade license blanks for a couple bucks, .080 alum, white on both sides.

Boy Ray, that's neat. It would be cool to have a '68 plate for my Camaro that matched the Bridge Plate on the back. I doubt anyone would notice but I'd know...

I've used the pre-made blanks before and they work just fine;you just have to scuff em up real good to get the paint to stick.
The only reason I started making my own blanks was someone had given me a bunch of aluminum panels about 19x24.They're easy to cut with tinsnips and I get 6 blanks out of each one(if I'm doing standard size plates).I cut em and drill em and scuff and paint a half dozen at a whack.Don't cost anything and these are zinc chromate on one side and light gray satin finish on the other. Here's one I just finished a few minutes ago for a friend of mine in Pennsylvania. He had given me a set of LazerLines brushes and wouldn't take any money for them(they're about $125 a set)so I figured he'd get a kick out of this.

If you get bored with NORMAL colors, by all means don't feel that you cant make one thats black with lime green letters, from 1964, that says SQUISHD http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the heads-up on the colors manyolcars; The site that I use to research my plates(licenseplateshack)shows a 57 LA plate in purple and yellow. There is a 60 plate that looks to be purple and sort of a dark mustard yellow letter. The 57 plate may have been a(old)repaint as my monitor usually reproduces colors pretty accurately.I try very hard to reproduce the originals as closely as possible to add to the realism. Thanks again.
