tech request: 40s brakes on 30s axle

i see it mentioned often but ive never realy seen any information on what is needed to do this, taking say 41-48 ford car brakes and putting them onto a 31 ish model A axle.

they just bolt on? or do you swap spindals?

how do ya do it?

You can either swap the the spindles complete
with brakes or........
purchase the bearing adapters and backing plate centering spacers
from company's such as Speedway.
You also have to do a little notching of the backing plate
holes so they will bolt to the A spindles.
Thats about it.

New bushings and king pins (for the year spindles you
are using).
And you will probably need to shortin the tie-rod.

so if you had an entire 40s front end youd just need the bushings and shorten the tie-rod?

Yes, buy new king pins, have them installed in your spindles and put it all together on your 30s axle. Your tierod may or may not be the right length. Good luck, dug

keep your A axle ....and use `37-48 spindles

the model A had different style tie rod ends than the ones used later (`35-`48).....so just shortening your old tie rod will not be enuff...you will need to make a new one and use the later style tie rod ends for the steering arms on you spindles....or shorten one end of a later tie rod


if you don't have access to the eqiuipment to do this,i'd make you a new tie rod...or shorten one too

any chance the 40s tie rod would be the right lentgth, or at least closer?

The later axles are wider than the Model A.
Which means your spindles are further apart,
so you need to shorten the later tierod to use it,with the later spindles,on an early axle.

The 40's tie rod is the one you want to use
if you are using the 40 spindles.
But you will have to shortin it.
If the rod ends are worn, you may as well just
buy a new one with new rod ends.

Also if you are going to use the forty spindles,
you will need a bolt on steering arm if you
are using a drag link steering box.
The forty used a cross steer box.

Don't forget that the king pin inclination is different between an A and a 40.The inclination on the A is 6 degrees and on the 40 it's 7 1/2 degrees so the tires will be angled inwards at the bottom.Not a big deal;when everything is assembled,the alignment should be re-adjusted usually by heating and bending the axle slightly.
