Hey, I'm picking up a 223 inline 6 and it's 6 volt....How do I go about switching the motor over to 12 volt in the distributer? I'm gonna put a 12 volt Ford alternator on it, but not sure about what to do with the distributer....anyone
have any idea? Was thinking of putting a pertronix kit in it
but not sure if it's more involved than that.
thanks!

When I converted to 12vlt. I did nothing to the distributor. It ran fine, but you do have to use a 12vlt. coil.
Leter, I converted to a modified S-10 electronic distibutor (it's a daily driver).
Some people say you need to convert the starter to 12vlt. but originally Ididn't and it was fine.
Just turned faster...

Points are happy with any voltage! So your distributor really doesn't need to be modified. The Pertronix would be a "nice to have" , though. You do need to change the coil to a 12 volt unit and put a resistor in the "run" circuit. The resistor keeps the points from getting full 12 volts all of the time. They'll last ALOT longer that way!

RSC is 100% correct. The only thing you need to protect the distributor is a ballast resistor. Little cermaic looking thing. There are a few different styles. Just be aware of where you mount it as the resistor gets hot under load.

Assuming your converting to negative ground, nothing has to be done with the dizzy. You must have an ignition resister between the starter switch and the coil. (I assume the Pertronix requires this). Also, you have to run a wire between the I terminal on the solonoid and the out terminal on the resistor. This gives you a full 12 volts to start. As mentioned, a 12 V coil must be used. Usually no mods are needed to the starter (it will spin faster)need for
