Bash,

 What a broad question, this should get a lot of opinions.

1. Traditional hot rod - A hot rod build in the late '40's or early 50's. Can also be a car build in the style of the late '40's or early '50's using parts available during that time period. The latter can be so well done, no one can tell the difference between the real early ride and one build in 2006. Cars could be anything from the early teens to 1934.
a. For most people the '32 Ford high boy roadster would be the quintessential hot rod. For me its a '32 Ford 5/W with no fenders chopped, a hot engine, big & Little's and one hell of a fast ride.
b. Any car can be hot rodded, but it wouldn't be a hot rod in the traditional since. A '57 Chevy isn't a traditional hot rod ,but a hot rodded classic Chevy in the full fender style of the '50's. Even a '99 Toyota can be hot rodded with go fast goodies.

2. Traditional custom - A car done in the radical, full or mild custom style of the late '40's and '50's. A car build in this style with parts from the era or a new custom build to look like a ride from that era. With customs its hard at times to tell when it was build.
a. For most people a '49 to '51 chopped Mercury would be the quintessential custom, I would agree with this statement.
b. There are many cars that customize well from '36 Fords top '58 Impala's and many others. A '63 Pontiac makes a great custom but its not a traditional custom. My personal custom is a '49 Cadillac Sedanette its not a traditional custom, just a great period ride in the early mild custom style. I can go on and on about this but I'll stop here!

"Can't wait to see the hamb hound dogs jump on my opinions".

This is almost like trying to define pornography, which even has the Supreme Court scratching their heads. If you find someone old enough to have been involved in pre-WW II rodding, they may say that a real rod runs a four banger--none of them new fangled V8s for them!!

Thanks Heathen for your definition. They used to have a saying about them 4 bangers too, " 4s are for go, and 8s are for show.

Thanks again,

Bash
