I'm going to be repainting my flathead as soon as I get it back from the machine shop. Im looking for the best paint to use. I used POR-15 last time and I'm not real happy with the way it held up or held its color. I'm looking for a bright red. Is brush or spray best? This is going on a flathead in a hoodless car. Thanks for any help!

I usually spray motors with an epoxy primer then coat them with base coat clear coat just like painting a car. Holds up great. I've had old motors come back from being hot tanked and they still had most of the paint on them.

I've had good luck using "One Shot" signpainter enamal. It stays glossy longer than anything I have ever used.

I used "Concept" a single stage on my engine. Shot it over clean block and heads.
It has been on since 1997 and looks as good as ever.
I just washed the bare block with a sponge and dish wash liquid.
Then, I wrang out the sponge, dipped it in clean water and wiped again.
I kept repeating that process untill the sponge stopped picking up soap.
Washed with a prep sol. and wiped down with clean wipe.
Then mixed paint, shot, waited for flash, shot a second coat, let dry, stabbed it in car, bolted on accessories, wired, fired, been driving since.

Bill Hirsh sells oem type stuff that has held up really well for me.

I used the rattle can high temp engine paint on my 390 FE (under a hood). You can get it at any parts store. Cleaned it super well, and degreased it before spraying. 10 years later and it still looks fine. Its Not show quality, but its not peeling off or discolored much either. Its discolored a little around the headers, but not bad.

Do a search (the little button up by where you click to Logon, between "Main Index" and "My Home") and type in the words "engine paint". Youll get a good hours worth of responses to read on this same subject.

Imron, good paint.
DO NOT BREATH IT!
WEARthe best respirator you can get, preferably a fresh air supply suit.

I too have had good luck with the high temp rattle cans - if you clean it, it will stick

I used One Shot bright red on my flathead. I have used gloss black on other engines with excellant results

One shot works amazingly well... I noticed Eastwood sells some hardener for one-shot that I guess makes it better. I bought some and have tried it on my wifes car... so far, so good.
