I was going through old pictures today and came across these and thought id share. I was out at this guys piece of property in the desert giving hime my down payment on the sedan delivery in the background , and then just kinda snooping around i saw this wacky looking project that was obviousely from the early 60's, maybay even 50's, and i asked him where he dug that out from. He said he had gotten it from some crack-head that was going to sell it as scrap aluminum, (yes,ALUMINUM), for his next fix and thought "oh no", it's worth saving, and bought for a song. He did resurch on the project and came up with this. There were 3 sailors that worked sheetmetal ,(more than likely gearheads), on a ship together in the Navy. Well, they decided when they got out they would get together and build a radical aluminum rod, and so they did . This car is on the cover of a 50's HotRod mag. Not sure which issue but i'm sure one of you guys can fill that info in. The car was built entirly out of aluminum except of course for the frame ,and wood spares to buck the aluminum on, and was left as a skeleton for support. It was painted like a hunter green entirly on the cover of H/R. The "straight 8" engine sat behind the two passenger,(for a lack of better words), cubbyhole, and the rear end was not identified. It looked as if they used European window frames Jag/Mg maybe. I tryed to see how the engine and rearend were mated but it was to far back in the hole. I picked up my sedan delivery a few weeks later and he had moved it to the back 40 and i didn't see it again, until.......... I was watching The revised "Gone in 60 seconds", and when they show the front of their chop-shop there it was!, right behind the fence up front, what looked to have been sanded and maybe polished out. If someone has that copy of H/R i sure would love to read the full story behind it. Enjoy! "Hip" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I am sorry I need to be honest. The workmanship is cool and interesting, but somethings are just butt ugly. Of course as years go by I guess it makes them more interesting. Why isn't the guy restoring it????

daign
03-25-2004, 12:56 PM
That thing was built by one guy. I believe he was a automotive designer from los angeles. Norman Timbs...

That car is no longer in the desert. It sold for some hefty bucks at Barrett Jackson about 2 years ago here in LA. I took pictures of it and took a look around the 'interior'.

Its an interesting project and piece of history. But its a piece of scrap metal to most...

Well what i was saying last night is that i figure he either sold it or rented to the movie company. You can see the aircraft influence that went into this project in the "step only" plate from the magazine article. I like it. Almost looks like a cross between a NASA lifting body and a vintage lakes racer. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Eh, the vette looks like it's been used for parts. Nix that.. vette crap is expensive, almost as much as mustang crap.

What's that rusty 30's sedan, in the pic of the 2 4door sedans and the cab-over in the background? Looks like something other than fjord... Are there two? One pic looks like a 2-door, the other a 4 door... same car?

I'm astounded at the stuff hiding out in the bushes here in the dirt...

I don't think we'll here from him tonight. He was taking his truck out on its maiden voyage today after work and he made a sharp turn in an intersection and the bed flew off! He forgot to bolt it down. Man it wasn't a pretty scene to say the least.

Ok . Just now found the time to reply to Satin's little "fib"! The truck is not on the road yet. The trucks maiden voyage is at least another month out. The bed will be securely bolted to the frame, unlike the previouse clone was,and it didn't kick up the production in the post like i think he thought it might. when he showed me his reply i couldn't just let it go. I'm not a total dumbass, just one of my cheeks are numb.
