View Full Version : The '47 gets 4" shorter in the ass end! And a mock up GRILLE

KIRK!

Jason and I blocked the rear end tonight. It should still settle an inch or more front and back. That'll be just right for a bagless driver. I mean I plan on driving it to Detroit for Billetproof. Then we cut the bottom half off the old grille to see what the Buick would look like. What do you think?

Jason is in there for a height reference.

I was thinkin' skirts but after we mocked them up they're going away.

Those are Buick grille teeth aren't they? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I acquired a bunch of them last fall to do the exact same thing to the grille opening on my 46. I haven't gotten started yet but at least now I now it looks right. The car is looking good man.

Looking awesome...

Tail is PERFECT..lights look bitchin'.
Rear Without skirts looks best...But I like them on two..anyway to keep them so they can be easily put on removed...flush with wheel arch???

Love the Hubcaps...Plymouth? Stude?

The front has to have slim chrome rims or frenched lights.
Grille is bit too teethy for me..big floating chrome bar my pic!

Damn..i want on of these now....

Cheers

The chop is sweet and the stance looks great. I'm not sure about the grille either. It would probably grow on me.
So, you're bringing yours to Michigan? I guess I won't be the only one there with a '46-'48. Mine's not chopped so we'll be able to tell 'em apart. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Wanna sell the skirts?

KIRK!
03-24-2004, 11:08 AM
Yeah, the grille is very questionable. I cut up my crappy one because I have another stocker coming from an Ebay auction.

Oh, and the headlights WILL be frenched. Just waiting for the money to buy rings.

Yea...get yer 6' 6" frieand to stand next to yer car so it looks lower!!! When ya gonna drop that bitch??? And Kirk...that is the ugliest fucking grille ...looks like an old chrysler product...one of the granny cars.
Man...being in Oklahoma sure makes me cranky!

I like it. Tough call on the skirts. good with, good without. sits real nice, though.

Geez old lady!!!! Nah, Brewsir I agree. It sounded much better in theory than when we popped it in.

Jason's only like 5'4" tall. Nearly a midget!

I think the grill looks pretty good, the grill teeth are the same matching shape as the rib going down the center of your hood. How successfull the grill comes out might depend on what that upper grille bar looks like in the end. Is it going to be body color or chrome?

Looks pretty damn cool to me, skirts just dont seem to look right to me, but the grill is ok, tough call, sweet ride though. D.J.

I think I'd like it more without the skirts, but if ya keep 'em...maybe roll that rear pan???

Ok ..I like the skirts...it's a custom...nice ass too! (yours too Kirk haha)
We got the tranny in last nite...but before putting the driveshaft back in, we checked the U-joints and found a couple of very tight spots in the yoke end sooo today Root's dad is taking it out for a new U joint....damn truck even got a oil change...it won't know how to act!

I also vote no on the skirts. It looks mean without them.

I vote yes on the grill. It will take some finessing, but I think it's a great, unique start.

Got your email. I'll keep an eye out for the package. Thanks!

dude,

you're askin' for opinions, so here's mine:

lose the skirts

roll the rear pan

no bumpers, front or back

don't do the vertical grill teeth

when you french the headlights do so as subtly as possible. i.e., just weld the trim rings on, fill, paint body color, and mount the light fixtures from the back. i'm pretty sure that some ford trim rings are stainless and others are mild steel. if yours are ss then find some mild steel ones.

good job so far

oh yeah, post pix of whatever you do when it's "done"

It's going to be impossible to look at a grill properly until you get all the metal primed the same color. Now it looks like it's got a mustache and goatee with a bling-bling grin inbetween. I can't look at it now without thinking "Greased Lighting" since you told me that's the same grille. Definitely like the no skirt look with those wheel/tires/caps.

It looks the same above, but in this piece of shit, it's just flat stock.

The overall contour of the car is fabulous. I am not a fan of skirts, so my opinion on that is probably too predictable. I do think (since you asked) that the vertical grille teeth fight with the chopped, smoothed and lowered (visually widened) car. Not that it should have a stock grille, but something with more horizontal emphasis. By the way, this opinion is worth every bit of what you paid for it....... Very nice work overall.

looking killer kirk. I that the grill could work, but will take a more ovalized opening maybe?

Just playing around with putting a floater in there and molding the upper bar into more of a suround instead of square opening. Hard to really tell without the bumper and headlights on it, but you get the drift.

I'm not diggin' the grill either, but the rest is bad ass. Especially without the skirts.

03-24-2004, 08:04 PM
Kirk think about this......'53 chevy grille surround -molded in[no spears around fender corner]-4-5 horizontal bar grille-Then use a pair of 53 Buick headlight rings and turn signals

I definitely like the floater idea. No matter what if I go with the stock grille top and something else below, the whole opening will get molded in.

Dondanno..I told you not to tell!

Thanks for the input. It's funny how we all pretty much end up in the same place opinion wise.

Jason showed me the Grease thing like 2 months ago and I was bummed. I even hated that car when I was young. I still root for the pizza face guy.

Does anyone have a nice candidate for a floater?? Here's something interesting on Ebay. It's one piece.

I like the buick grille cause it's different and I would have to say it looks tough with or without skirts. why not take a couple old bumper gaurds and make a grille ou of em with two gaurds and sme exhsaust tubing. you can always paint it and chrome it later. prolly a cheap date and cool too! I got a mess of bumper gaurds if you need some. drew

I feel so lame. I have had such a clear vision for the whole car since day one...except for the grille treatment.

Django
03-25-2004, 11:13 AM
Is that a '55 bumper accessory bar? THat would be a good grill, but it might be a little small for that car. Or you would just have to mould more sheetmetal.

Damn, that looks like it was really nice when you started. I would have just run it like that for awhile. It will be bad ass when you finish it.

Yeah, I bought it on Ebay from an old man in Alabama who was doing an OK job of a frame off restoration. It was pretty solid but not perfect. I had to promise him I would restore it. Ooops!

Denise, I know, I know. It's being put together. The web wizard Zonkola basically does it on the side for nearly free. So I can't push too hard. I think there will be a big cheer when it goes up. I'll let everyone know as soon as it does.

Come on dude, there's a huge line behind me here in Michigan that wanna register and we've been waiting like forever and the guys are getting drunk and unruley and misbehavin. I just wanna pay my money so I can get away from these guys. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW, I'm first in line, no matter what anyone else says, I wanna be the first one registered at the FIRST BilletProof-Detroit show ever! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

oh yeah, and the pressure is not going to stop till it's updated http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Word travels fast. I was going to put up a post regarding the meeting but I forgot all the contact info at home, I'll do it tonight though. So.... I thought I'd just bust your balls a bit about the website today. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The guys at the meeting were all very nice, especially Cornbinder and Roger, forgot his HAMB name. Boomer seems like he has everything under control. I do think that the website being updated and being able to register that way would do alot in getting the ball rolling.

I'll be attending 3 large shows in the month of May here in Michigan that I'll not only had out the "personal" invites but flyers as well. 2 out of the three have large vendor/swap areas. I'll hit them as well. I'll also get the all the "Gay Michigan Bitches" involved. The Midland guys can hand out flyers in their area, the Flintoids can handle their area, the Lansing crew can get their area, Safarinut to handle his area and maybe get Mongo to handle the Grand Rapids area. With all the Michigan HAMB folks involved, we've got this state covered as far as getting the word out.

Michigan, especially Detroit, really needs this show and I'm going to do evrything in my power to help see that it's successful. How many cars at the first BilletProof-California? 60 I heard. I'm going to guarentee we're going to triple that! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif and it's going to be a hell of a party to boot! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
