This is my first post as I'm a fng to this site. I'm not really a die-harder like alot of you, but I am a guy with a scrote. There is a moral to this story, so hang tight. I like b-body Chevy's. 1968&69 El caminos and Chevelles to be exact. 5 or 6 years ago I traded a guy out of a '69 for 5 motorcycle tires.(I own a dealership) This car was a driver with typical b-body rust but otherwise solid. Just an Elcam with a 350. Nothing special. I had a dream that I restored it so I started taking it apart. Keep in mind this car was a driver. I tore that car to hell, didn't mark shit, bagged nadda, complete dissassembly. That car never ran again. I practically gave it away after spending God knows how much time and money on it. The moral is don't do that. I was stupid.

My first five cars were 68-72 Chevelles (A-body cars in GM terms, actually).

Back in the early 80s, they were dirt cheap intermediates that nobody wanted...Novas and Camaros were the hot ticket back then. The MOST I ever paid for one back then was $700...and that was for a 396 four speed car!

Nothin' wrong with 'em...learned alot about cars and engines, had a lot of fun, won some races, made some money and scored some gals!

Being a car guy is an evoloutionary thing...you'll go through phases and learn something new with each project! It'll make ya well rounded (ummm...knowledge-wise, that is!)

My favorite "late model" cars are chevelles. I was so into them I would have probably gotten "chevelle" tatooed on my chest if my dad wouldn't murderize me! I never had the chance to get a 60's one, but I used to own a 79 Malibu (kissing cousin to the velle) that I turned into a cheap corner carver. Man, I miss that thing... comfortable, fast, and easy to drive.. those sloppy-assed grandma cars could be made into serious movers on the cheap.

Nothing wrong with a traditional Chevelle! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Mine gets me all over the west from North Idaho to Southern California and Seattle to Denver every year besides back and forth to work and local cruises. Beats showing up in a Honda or staying home because the 31 coupe isn't built yet and the flatty wouldn't be a good freeway flyer anyway. I've put in cruise control, air conditioning, tunes etc. It'll do 80mph all day and night, bury the speedo at less than 1/2 throttle, climb 6% grades at 8,000 ft. without kicking out of cruise control. It carries 4 people comfortably and I get thumbs up and "Wow, nice car!" everywhere I go. It's 34 years old so it's older than the Young Guns on this board. I can't do power parking at NSRA events but it's welcome everywhere else. That's traditional enough for me.

You learned from that first car wether you realize it or not. Now go build another one!

Django, The redline tires with black wheels and dogdish caps look rad on that car. I really like that look.

I drove a '71 Buick GS for a couple years that I sold to 'finish' my shoebox, and my Dad has a marina blue '66 SS396 4spd Chevelle that he's almost done with. I also have a '65 Buick Skylark convertible that I hope to finish sometime in the next two years.

So as you can see I have a soft spot for the GM A-body myself....welcome aboard, jheller

You from the Twin Cities, area?

I did a similar thing, when I was a teenager. I pulled the body off of my deuce, to have it painted, and just cut the wires that ran out the bottom of the firewall, without marking them. I figured I could just match 'em back up...
WRONG!!!

There is a lot of knowledge on here on the HAMB if you are interested in learning something...
I'm sorry for my aggresive post this morning....
I was a little confused in that in your intro, no where did you say you had a intrest in what we do here RYAN'S GARAGE (tm).....
You see, what you may not realize, is if you did not get Ryans approval, All of your warm welcomes might have turned into cold hearted flaming of a newbie....
But alas, maybe not...
The HAMB is a kinder gentler place now.....
Even GERM (tm) stood in your defense....
Someday you may know what a honor that was....
Maybe TLC should call on us again because we are no longer the "WE ARE FUCKING HOODLUMS" we once were.....
I'm again sorry I over reacted this morning when all I saw were Chevelles and VDUBS...
On the HAMB....

I thought I was on the wrong board....

I'm sorry...

Welcome to the HAMB...With a name like Heller I would have called myself HellerHighWater. What can I say I'm a little left of normal and a little right of insane http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't care if you like Chevelles or Elky's....Who thinks their Sporty is fast or the other BS that is not "traditional" on here. I come for the entertainment, education (I've learned alot here) and the comraderie (sp?).

But.....I do have to know one thing about you....are you that mother*%#@#& heller dude that always outbids me on stuff on Ebay? If so... at least it feels better that a HAMB'r is gettin' some cool stuff.

I personally think that early Elky's when done up look great. Astro Supremes, thin whites and a 'flaked roof are what I'm thinking!

And as a side note:

A sporty can be fast (had one). But after riding a Ducati monster gave up on going the Harley route for speed and HANDLING! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif I now run a fat FLH shovel with tank shift and apehangers...no speed, terrible handling and a mile high in the fun factor! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

LOL, Mine doesn't have much rust. Just the holes where the rust used to be! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

So, back on topic. What you interested in building there newbie? Don't let Ryan corupt you with that shiney black imaculate over powered thing of his. May I make some suggestions?

Go minimalist on the first one. You're building to learn and have fun. Cheap and easy learning curve.
Roadster or RPU. No top to chop and you'll still be cool.
Real roadsters are expensive, but a Brookville A body is not too expensive and I won't tell if you won't. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
A coupes are cheap and not hard to find too but need chopping and lots of rust & dent repairs.
No fenders, running boards or hood.
simple suspension. Dropped axle or suicide front end.
simple paint, wiring and cheap wheels & tires.
Wrecked donor car for running engine, tranny and rear end.
You want to get this one up and on the road so you can cruise and do events & see what everyone else is doing. Save building the monster engine & drivetrain for the next project. Once this one is up and running you can use it to learn things like shaving the handles, making a custom dash and other mods. That's another reason for the cheap paint.
Basically a simple but cool runner you can learn the basics on with minimal fuss then drive and have a ball with.

By the time this one is on the road you'll have learned some skills and you'll know what you want to do for the next one.

What's kind of humorous was when I was still roadracing and they started up this Sportster class. They ran it in the same class that I ran my Ducati 650 in. Made it fun for me, lots of people to pass. 'Cept one time at Roebling Road I coming around turn 3 and see a white plated (expert) sporty and get all excited, but I could not catch this puppy until the front straight at which time I blew by him. Around turn 3 he came back by me, went like this the whole race. Turns out it was this Shawn Higbee guy who went on to win the H-D Super Twins class and ride for Feracci. Tickled me that there was a sporty I couldn't outrun...

I was going to ask the same thing Curly! It cant be the same guy because the stuff he sells and bids on belong on traditional rods as we call them not chevelles!

My old hamb statement would be "Its not what you know but who you blow!"

New hamb statement "Welcome to the Hamb!"

I've been a horsepower guy forever, so musclecars are in my blood along with rods and customs. It was the power of musclecars that led youth away from hot rods back in the '60s, but later rods were built with muscelcar-era motors for the best of both worlds. If you're a horsepower junkie, it's hard not to love 'em all. In addition to my '50 Buick custom job, I've also got my '67 Chevelle wagon (parts hauler/daily driver) and my ongoing '65 GTO project car (with the world's largest traditional Pontiac V-8 engine). Musclecars are old cars too...at least they are now.

jheller,
I guess I'm the only one on the board that hasn't showed his ass yet, well not today anyway. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Try and ignore the really big hairy ones. And get yourself some big ol ziplock baggies for the next teardown.
Welcome friend, let us know what we can do to help you along,

Chevychevychevychevychevy.....this WAY OT thread is a little thin on Fords....here's a couple shots of my '69 Mach I....my first love. One shot during an open track event at Watkins Glen (yes, big blocks and road courses can mix....carefully), one in street trim and another of the mighty 428SCJ. There are lots others....drags and road course mostly.....one smokey burnout out on the road. yadayadayada...

Yup, i was into GM muscle..still enjoy seeing and working on em.
My scanner isn't hooked up, and i have no clue how to do it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I had a '70 ElCamino that was probably the cleanest car i've ever owned..350 300hp, 4 speed, 12 bolt, ac, disc's, 50 thousand miles, unrestored,blah blah blah..
Had a few "G" body Malibu's and another "G" ElCamino..
'66 Impala..etc etc...you get my point i'm sure..

I'm not too biased not to appreciate a nice car, even if it's not what i'm into now..
Hell, i'm not really into mustangs, but i've seen Chief's and it's a bad ride..hidden in a 'stock' skin..

Welcome to the Riff Raff

Painting the rim with a red line is a stroke of genius!
It hides the big rims (not that you need to do that)... and makes you look TWICE!

I like that!

Here's a "street machine" I built... looks stock until you pop the hood and see the 500hp aluminum head'ed big block FORD!!
Runs like a raped ape too!

OK- Chief,,I play your game!
My 1st car was a bone stock 62 Chevy II,,I wasn't old enough to drive so that car sat for a lil bit..I then picked up a cheap 76 Chevy. My dad & i did a lil work to the motor & then painted the car,,,primer gray w/black steel rims w/skinny whites. I drove that car for about a 1 1/2 yrs then sold it for a 63 Chevy II 4 door,,wich was also a stocker but i painted the rims black & put a set of skinny whites on it..During that time i wanted to do the 62 as an old style drag car,,looong story short. I got taken, the car got stripped and the shop closed down. I sued the guy & his estate,,In wich during that time owned another 64 Chevy II, 2 63 Impalas, one wagon & even a 38 Chevy Coupe...In wich were all sold/traded for more shitboxes & help to finance purchasing my 1st house... The guy eventually died and his estate settled...The Chevy II was badly abused and the best way to repair the 'hack' work was to tub it and sell it,,so with some of the money from the settlement the car got a full tube chassis and I purchased the Model A wich i still have today. I've always been about primer and black steelies w/skinny whites..Sorry, but its sad but true!..It didnt matter what type of car it was that was the treatment it got...I picked up the 53 Chevy wich was my daily driver as well as a stepping stone for what the 'Pack Rats' are today..We all have a 'LOVE' for vintage cars,,no matter they are..Thats why we are all here!
I hope this helped you with what you were looking for..Class is Dismissed

It doesn't roll on like an FXR, but it stays with the pack no prob, I put 200 miles on it Sunday. Took me a while to get all of the bugs off, the bike and myself.

Now, I gotta get the frame rails cut to length and weld them up and put the skills to work.

Yeah SPORTSTERS are for VIETNAMESE SHE-GENDER boys who DELIVER the HOOKER PURCHASER PAPER to the FAT PIMPLE FACED AMERICAN G.I.s............

isn't a SPORTSTER the BIKE that GIVES a BIG BALLS feeling to the VERTICALLY challenged and VAGINAL getting IMPAIRED?
Did HARLEY send you a HANDICAPPED PASS?????

EVEN BOY GEORGE wouldn't ride a SPORTSTER.....
maybe OL-SKOOL RODZ will make the SPORTSTER a COOL as they MADE the 56 RAT ROD CHEVY FAT GIRL TEACHER ARMED MISS PIGGY "COOL"....

I think its the other way around....
Guys that knock sportys and insist on big twins being the RULER (tm)
are probably lacking in INCHES in their own way....
Have to make it up in 6 more cubes....
or calling a old knuckle or Ironhead a "big twin"....
When the engine is smaller than mine?
Or do they mean BIG TWIN cause their bike weighs 200+ pounds more than my sporty?
Guess I'm just a TRANSEXUAL when I just thought I was a METROSEXUAL
