I have one...just afraid of what may be living inside..... It took years for it to quit cloggin up my filter.
The stainless will cause an electro-galvanic corrosion on the mild steel parts if you have say.. a pickup tube or float? We built a ss tank for dad's and within 3 months his intank pump quit working...pulled it out and it looked like it had been laying in the salvage yard for 120 years. It was bad. We never thought about it...the tank sender and pump were out of a late model but they all have poly tanks now.

Thanks guys. I went to Bob Drakes and they actually finally make a gas tank for a 35-37 Ford pickup in mild steel that accepts the original filler neck. Gotta have one. Now I hafta borrow some money from Rashy.

weve never had a ss tank come back for any reason, would the ss do the same to justa sender and a pickup?

I just got a painted steel tank from Tanks Inc for my '36 coupe. It doesn't accept the screw in neck, but we plan to cut the end sleeve off and connect the main tube to the tank with a 3" rubber hose. This tank is made in the same shapes as original and is 1.5" deeper for a total of 16 gallons. $220 if I remember correctly. $20 shipping. Mounts in the factory holes.

BOY,
Are YOU barking up the WRONG tree!
Why not have it boiled and lined?
Had Mama's done for $140. Seems fine.
Looks good.

I am unsure of the reason behind the accelerated corrosion but I hear that very few people are building the ss tanks for this very reason.
Rashy. Mine shows some leakage around the seams, dunno if I wanna jack with it. They say that lining stuff is just a temp fix for a couple of years. Dunno...I have never done it myself.

run a poly tank in my 40. it was with the car when I got it. I like it so much I bought a poly tank for my 48 pickup (which is on a 67 chevy truck frame, and has a 67 blazer tank)
anyhow my opinion.. go poly (and keep the pipes away from it)

Sorry to intrude, but, are the Ford 39/40 tanks compatible with a 40 merc? I have a coupe and need to get a gas tank for it real soon.

Rock Valley is another option, they build a decent tank.

According to Mr 40's FatStuff, Ford Ranger gas tanks will work, giving you additional capacity. They sell the brackets to make it work w/wo the tank.
