View Full Version : Removing plastic body filler from small dents

Plastic media blasting won't remove filler, and I'm not going to sandblast old sheet metal.

On large areas, I use a propane torch, using just enough heat to soften up the filler so it can be removed with a scraper, and then finish up with a D/A sander.

What's the best way to get old plastic filler out of small dents in vintage fenders, without removing any of the metal, and minimizing the chance of work-hardening it?

a wire cup in an angle grinder works pretty good on high crown areas.

or multiple aplications of aircraft remover on flatter panels.

36 grit will take it out. Just don't bare down on it.

Small flat wire brush or rotary file.

Take a 5 inch 36 grit grinding disc on your air grinder and cut it into a pentagon or hexagon shape, using old tin snips. Use it with a 3" backing plate. The corners of the disk will quickly dig right into tight spots and rip the filler out...

I've found that a heavy duty industrial type heat gun works better than a torch.

Depending on the crown of the panel and metal thickness, Id be tempted to still go with the Propane torch.
Might just shrink out the dent while you're at it.
