Unfortunately, can't use the black "63" plates. Has to be
62 and older, where the plates are yellow with black letters and have the "56" on it.

You can't. Last year tag you can get is 1962 for your "56" plates. If you try to put black plates or any other plates on your 1963 or later vehicle, DMV won't allow it. The only way you can keep your black plates is if you can prove that the car originally came with those black plates, or it has been continuously registered for the life of the vehicle.
For the last 3 years there has been a bill passed through California senate and assembly and it passed with flying colors... to allow the re-assignment of the CA black plates. All 3 times it made it to Governor Gray "I have no penis" Davis' desk only to be vetoed by him for "safety reasons". It's a bullshit excuse for "We want our prisoners to keep working and making new plates so that the people of CA can continue to pay for new plates". I don't think the CA black plates will get 1/2 of 1% of all plates in California. Hopefully Arnold will allow this one to go through if it is presented again. I've been kind of saving black plates in anticipation of this going through.

travis is absolutely correct.
I have tried, and failed, on two occasions to put black plates on a '63 car and on an earlier car... ya gotta have that old registration card that shows that the car had them on it at one time...
I also know of a stiry where the owner of the '50 Ford I did succeeded in getting black plated reassigned to the '50. HE just brought in the paperwork that was 30 years old that had the old black plate numbers on them... done deal.

Donnie-
this place-
www.licenseplates.tv (http://www.licenseplates.tv)
makes "novelty" plates that are a dead ringer for the real thing. They won't ship CA plates to CA so you have to have them shipped to another state and forwarded. Then you go to DMV and get new sticker because your 40 year old MONTH sticker just fell off and then someone stole your YEAR sticker- they hand you new ones for free.
they are like $75 each but I'd say on the OLDS it is the upgrade you need the most- those white plates doo look pretty bad.
you've seen mine right? they are only 6 numbers but they do look 100% real.

i don't generally take close ups of my license plate. . .
anyway, you know I am a picky bastard and I'm telling these are right on. raised letters, raised CALIFORNIA, inset rectangles where the stickers go, and a little 63 stamped under where the year sticker goes.
do it you won't be disappointed

Donnie- Do you have an old registration slip that shows the number of the black plates that were on the car before? You could have some novelty plates made up with that number. You'd have to age them, but it could work..

i just got mine in the mail and the look exactly like the old 63 plates. with the exception because i had them use my current plate numbers there are 7 instead of 6 numbers. other than that they look PERFECT.!!!!!!!!! i hightly recomend these guys if you have a post 62 car and want old plates......thanks again robert you rule!!!!!!!!!...
You do know that if you actually run those on the street you run the risk of a "forged plate" felony arrest don't you?
Just thought I'd mentio it.
Running no plates at all is less risky.
Just don't put a month and 2005 "sticker" on them and carry the real ones at all times, you might get by.
