How many of you draw out your design , before you lay the paint down over what you drew? what do you use if you draw it out then stripe over it? Thanks Nate

Stabilo's are great. Does anyone draw out their whole design? just curious, I usually just draw a center line and start puttin down lines.

I draw a 1" grid, then draw all the lines for the first color.
Paint the first color, then let dry and repeat.
After the 3rd or 4th color is dry,I usually wash off the grid and work freehand.

I've probably drawn out two designs ever. To me part of striping is the surprise of coming out with a good design without doing any planning beforehand. but if you want to guarantee a good design, drawing it out is the way to go. And if your using clear plexiglass you can just put a peice of graph paper behiond it, because stabillos leave a slight trace behind.

Not to hijack the post or anything but I haven't been able to find stabillo pencils anywhere. Any Ideas?

Any decent art supply store should have Stabillo, you want the ones that say "Aquarellable".
Get White and Dark Blue.
Look in the Yellow pages under "sign supplies".
Or try Mid West Sign Supply,or N.Glantz online.

I'm with Daddio on that one.
Where are they?

I got a couple of pencils the other day called "Scribe All" all surface pencils. They are wood cased grease pencils touted as being ideal for: Tiles/ ceramics, fine art, hobby, textiles, stainglass, templates, stencils...

Anyone think something like that would be good for using in place of a stabilo?
I haven't had the opportunity to try one out yet.....

DOH!

Unkl Ian already answered the question.

I just busted out my Scribe alls and they seem to work real well on my metal table here. The line even wipes off easily with a little wiping with my fingertip.....

I'll probably give them a try.
