chuck,

in the ford line 48, 49,& 50 were the same. although the general overall shape was very close to that of the 48-50, the 51 was different in the front sheet metal, dash, & back window. 52 was nearly identical to 51, but had some slight differences.

i assume the mercs were the same, but don't know for sure.

what plans do you have for this truck?

btw; the vin is stamped into the top of the frame rail beside the engine. i believe it's the passenger side, but i'm not sure & i'm too lazy to go outside to look at mine. i can't decode the vin, but there are guys/gals on here who can or you can find the info on the web.

I'll look on the frame then and see if its there, the plate on top of the firewall is gone though

I got a 49 f1 with that mercury and was going to try and make 1 good one between them, I got the paper work on the ford so I was going to pirate the better stuff off the merc for the ford, but if there is a vin number on the frame maybe I can track down a previous owner and have 2 trucks? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

the ford has a mercury flathead in it and was running many moons ago but might have a busted block from sitting all these winters unattended,I have to get them home and have a look, I'm dragging them home at the end of the month

1 other thing I noticed was the ford has only 1 winshield wiper and the mercury has 2 whats with that?

The Ford only needed one driver?

there weren't many options available on these trucks, and the passenger wiper was one of them. the panel trucks have individual (sort of bucket) seats. the passenger seat was an option. i can't verify it, but i think i've heard that the passenger wiper was part of a deluxe package that included chrome (or ss) grill bar covers and maybe mirrors.

also check under the passanger side fender for a tube running from the area above the passanger side headlight toward the passanger side cowl area under the fender.. if the tube is there then the truck is a five star cab..and that stupid little tube is worth a mint to some restorers..

if you have the pass side wiper.. you may just also have the pass side heater tube and the unique fresh air heater of the 5 stars..

good luck.. I am partial to the fords.. but the mercs are cool too.. looks like your off to a good start..

by the way welcome to the hamb

The domestic Ford and Canadian Mercury trucks shared major stampings but differed in trim. As you can see, the '48-'50 Mercury had a four-bar grille whereas the Ford had five bars. Note also the front fender trim, the fender-mounted parking lights, and the MERCURY badging on the nose and between the bright trim on the hood sides.

Another thing to help narrow it down, if it is the same as a Ford, some 50's had flat bed sides and a wood bed floor.
