View Full Version : TIRES, Make your own Wide White Walls
Bugman

It's commonly known that you can use a grinder to make your own Wide White Wall tires. I've been doing it for years. Heck, there's even a How To in the Tech-o-Matic. I try to describe the process to people, but am often met with blank stares and "you're pulling my leg" looks. Still pictures just don't really convey just how easy it is to do.
So, last time I made a set, I filmed it. Here it is, explained step by step, shown for the very first time with moving pictures and Monophonic sound, How to make your own Wide White Walls:

Thanks for postin'!
I've been grindin' whites for a while and have found that the Kumho model #795 tires work great. They have a nice crisp outer edge.
One day, I will make/buy me one of these machines.:D

This is my vote for winner.
Now this is what YouTube Thursday and HAMB TV should be all about!!! It's hard enough to remember to take pictures while you're building. So taking the time to actually present on video and edit it, is really impressive.
I ground out my skinny whites and they look good from 10ft. The passenger side looks good from 5ft since I learned my lessons on the driver's side!! If I would've seen this prior, they'd all look good from 3 ft.
BTW, some white plasti-dip or fusion paint will clean up any little burn throughs you may have.

Great video.
You have a keen and easy-going way of explaining things. Good instruction.
And I enjoyed the sped-up portions. I imagined the Benny Hill "Yakety Sax" music over these parts. I'm easily entertained that way.

Very well done! I'm not a wide-white kinda guy (I run blackwalls on everything), but I still want to try that. What is the brand name on the see-thru disks? Those definitely would be cool for many applications. Thanks for the fine effort! A great tech week post.:D

This is the tech week winner IMHO and here's why I think so:
The tools used EVERYONE has, (or should).
Little background knowledge needed to understand the method.
There's been a TON of talk regarding how to do this, so not only is this a great subject, it's pretty darn timely.
Well executed video. Seeing it done in action trumps still photos which trumps no photos. I don't care how well you think something is described.
And most importantly, ANYONE can do this, now that we've seen it done.

Thanks for all the kind words. I really didn't expect this big a response. I didn't really think about it before you guys mentioned it, but you're right, this is my teacher side starting to show through once again.
About my grinding discs, I got them from the now defunct Machine Shop Supply that was a subsidiary of Lab Safety. I got a bunch through school when MSS went under. I think they are now sold by Rotozip, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, a flexable disk without a backing pad works tons better than a stone disc does.
I haven't really noticed a width/brand pattern yet. It's pretty inconsistant. I believe a RWL will be wider than a narrow WW, but again it varys. Even within the brands, different style tires are wider than others. I did notice however that Coopers seem to have the smoothest outer edge. The last set of Goodyears I did were pretty wavy. Since I'm perpetually on a budget, I always use new used junk yard take off tires. They range from $10-$15 a tire around here.
Haring, I was very very close to putting the Benny Hill music in the background. It's hard to use speeded up footage without it(course I didn't speed anything up, I really am just that good...:D )
Tingler, yes, my real name really is Jeff Tanko
Tok, you need to start with a thicker chunk of rubber...

Real good video!
I might add from experience that General XP2000 RWL-tires are unsuitable for grinding a white wall on them.
The outer line is very irregular and I also noticed a 'starting line' in the white parts.

Dunlop Rover ATs work pretty good, The only thing I did different was I left them on the wheel. It made the sidewall more stable and I felt, less likely to gouge the white.

4t64rd, I've tried it both mounted and unmounted. I found that with the tire unmounted it was easier to get down near the bead, but like you said, the sidewall was softer and gouges easier. I still prefer unmounted though, but it's just my personal preferance.
Another tip I didn't mention, try to keep the grinder as flat as you can. The steeper the angle, the easier it is to gouge the WW.

ive been grinding white walls for years! on the curb out side trying to get as close to the yard as i can. it turned a full set of thin whites into 3' whites. but i thought it was bad unsafe. thanks for the truly helpful post. i will grind some white walls this week. this is the winning tech post.

Jeff, That was great tech! Love the video. I never really thought about it until I watched your video. Then I remember a girlfriend I once had that drove an old Torino with white letter tires and the pass side was always scraped into a 3" wide white. I used to get pissed and I ended up painting them flat black. Rods and Customs should have wide whites not Torinos! LOL
Great tech Thanks alot
