Have you seen how big a '71 Mustang is? I think it will be way too wide for that little hot rod. It looks like it is 61.25" wide http://hiqties.hypermart.net/9inch.html#3rdmember .

http://www.kevinstang.com/Ninecase.htm heres some more info. Lots of links at the bottom too. How wide is the '41 rear (wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange)? What motor is going in it?

I have a '67 Cougar 8" in my '31 coupe. I think it runs 52" backing plate to backing plate.
My brother's '64 Comet rear end loks to be similar in width.

Aren't the Mustang 8" axles only 4 lug? I am using an 8" from a Maverick (5 lug). The width is within a 1/2" of the stock Model A rear axle.

Comet and Mavericks run 57" outside some also have the 5 lug pattern.
edit - love that body - gives me some ideas for the extra 30 A firewall i have. Did you make the doors?

V8 Mustang 2s came with a four lug eight inch rear axle, but the common 8" out of early Mustangs will have five lugs and be about the right width. Also consider:
1970-77 Maverick/Comet
1975-79 Granada/Monarch
1966-69 Ranchero/Falcon/Fairlane/Comet/Torino/Montego
Many early Mustangs with six cylinder engines were equipped with wimpy four-lug rear axles, same with Falcons, Mavericks and Comets up to about 1970 or 71.
If you have the 41 rear axle, and it's good...I'd use it. Keep the project low buck and build with what ya got when you can!

Why an 8"? I've got two and parts are getting harder and harder to find or should I say that part prices are going up and up! The 9" is still plentiful and cheap to build. Go price a posi unit for an 8" versus a 9" and then try to find the set of gears that you want....Speedway offers a few 8" ratios but a shitload of 9" gears and yes you can get skinny 9's from a yard still. Hell use truck axles and you can still have a 5 on 5 1/2 boltpattern!
