View Full Version : Midwest Winter Challenge: Slot Cars... OF DEATH!

Okay, midwest HAMBers. Old Man Winter approaches, and before you know it it'll be too friggin' cold for anything but sedentary activity. I propose we break the boredom with a no-holds-barred rumble at the slots!
This weekend I stumbled upon a vintage 1/25 slot parlor in Des Plaines - Dad's Slot Cars - that looks like a great venue; complete with road course, dragstrip and oval track. And, it's only a few blocks from an old 50s era bowling alley & lounge.
Here's what I was thinking: HAMB Drags, in miniature. We form teams to build the most badass 1/25 cars and then we settle it on the tracks. Three races: road course, strip, oval. Tentative point system for each race:
First place - 5 points
Second place - 3 points
Third place - 1 point
Best wreck - 5 points
Purtiest car - 5 points
At the end we tally points and winners get free beer at the bowling alley and kiss from the trophy girl, Miss Hot Slot.
I was thinking January or February would be the ideal time, but am open to other suggestions. Tinsoldier mentioned that there's also a good slot place in Evanston, and bobbleed mentioned Lucky Bob's in Milwaukee as well. Lemme know if you're interested, and I'll get some prices on renting out the slot place for a couple of hours...

I'm in Mr Z, what are the build rules?? I need to start collecting parts and testing them. Are we going traditional or high tech Carbon fiber crap?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Did you do know it's the same owner for both Tin Lizzy and the slot car place.. So I would think it a traditional track, but he's a stocker/ restorer type of guy??

Hey fellers, hold off on buying any kits yet... I better check if that place is 1/25 or 1/32 scale.
As far as build rules, I like the idea of having a common kit (say scalectrix) and allowing modifications off it; honor system to keep total costs per car under $40 or $50. I'm open to any suggestions.
I also like the idea of making this a HAMB fundraiser. Maybe we could have a $50 prize to the winner to cover build cost, and then donate the winning car for a HAMB auction? Whatever, I just want to drink beer and crash slot cars.

john, those cars at the cheaters show last yer weren't slot cars, but they were rocket cars! I'm working on a design for a rocket SLED when the snows come. We can add rocket car/sled races to the Winter Challenge. Here' mine from last year

I'd love to go, but it would be too far for me. I'll show ya my wicked slot though. It's a 1/32nd Whomp Whomp. Now, if you talk to slot guys, they'll say a Whomp Whomp, how stupid. That is what I planed on with this one. I spent hours and hours learning how to drive this thing at it's limits. Although not fast in the curves, I'd blow them away on the straights. It has the fastest/biggest motor I could find in '95 and I stuck it in there. It's "Super Wasp" 18 turn motor?? or 20, don't remember and a 3 ohm on the controller. This little monster can scream!!!

I still have two cars from 1965, or was that 66? They probably don't run anymore. A (make U/K), #196(?) I think is the model number, inline powered car and a Ram 22 powered one. THey used to be very fast pre suspension era.

Bleed went through a slot car faze a couple years ago. We would go racing after band practice every Wed night at "Lucky Bob's."
All of the regulars hated us cause we would crash them so we would always end up with the track to ourselves. It was AWSOME.
We used these chasis that you could put model Car bodies on.

HAMB Drags Rambler Rumble .025!
http://www.slotcargarage.com/gallery24.htm
I was visiting my brother in Marietta GA a few weeks ago, and he took me to a huge hobby store in Kennesaw, they had 1/32 and 1/24 layouts and cars in stock. I'm not sure what brand name they were, but they had a bunch of formula 1 and Can Am IMSA racing cars, and a couple Pontiac GTOs, Corvettes and Jaguar XKEs. The Website above seems to have information about chassis and stuff, Scalectrix looks like a UK company.
I don't know anymore than what I learned about slot cars from looking at old (1968) AutoWorld model car catalogs my dad had when I was a kid, and most of that info followed the beer out through my bladder.
Looks like fun though.
Could we ship our creations up there and have them destro... I mean raced by other HAMBers? I do have some doubles of model kits that could be butchered for this.

Sez you, SuperCuts. You Green Bay fudgePackers best bring yo' "A" game.
How's this for a tentative set of rules?
1. TEAMS - we do this on the basis of club, state, whatever; Each team represented by one car. For example, the Chrome Czars might want to enter as a team.
2. CARS - run what ya brung, honor system to keep total build cost per car under $50. Car body and paint must be 'traditional' rod style - no kenji, VTEC stickers, Lambourghini bodies, carbon fiber, etc.
3. POINT SYSTEM - Three races: road course, oval, strip. 20 laps on the road course & oval, 10 runs each on the strip, recording low ET. Fastest team in each race gets 5 points, second 3 points, third 2 points, fourth 1 point. Point ties will be broken on the dragstrip.
4. Prizes - trophy and $50 to overall winning team. Winning team must donate car to be auctioned off for HAMB. Additional trophies for best wreck and purtiest car. Last place team car will be destroyed violently.
5. COSTS: each team throws in $10 for the prize kitty, plus $5 per person admission. If that doesn't cover the cost for the parlor rental, I'll cover the rest. If it does, then it goes toward buying beer. I've got some old trophies I will contribute.
6. MISCELLANEOUS - I'll check into getting some commemorative T-shirts made.
Anyway, I'm open to suggestions. I still have to find out if Dads is 1/32 or 1/24 scale.

I like the idea of running what you brung as an indiviual AND as a club, but gotta wonder just how big it'd become if you didn't keep it to one car representing a group, Hey, that could be fun too! More prize or track rental money!
AND I've got some original old slot cars, both 1/25th and 1/32nd. SO
RULE #2. 'Traditional "STYLED"' Must be further defined. I'm sure if I were to remotor and wheel some vintage racers I've already got they would be competitive, UNLESS "STYLED" were able to include vaccuformed plastic bodies which aren't so-far defined as illegal while offering significant weight savings. AND HOW exactly are we defining "TRADITIONAL"? I'd hope that to mean as the SlotCar Hobby went? This too needs defined (for me http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) since I have early Indy cars to Porsche Speedster's to mid-60's stockcars and they ALL are "Traditional" in the sense that they survived racing 40some years ago. My latemodel is a 1/25 '66 Galaxie stocker, but it's a "Traditional" slotcar as it's got a brass frame and an AMT body. SO let's be sure to define everything like any race sanctioning body would to be fair and equal among competitors options.

The easiest way to keep cost down on an enterprise like this it to use a buyout clause like the lower classes of stock car racing use.
Basicly, you say that any competitor can buy your car from you for $50 and you can not say NO if you've entered and raced the car.

Unless anybody has any objections, I think we should go with 1/24 scale. 1/24 is "more traditional" and it would allow using bodies out of AMT, Monogram, Revell, etc plastic model kits.
This site offers a bunch of different turnkey 1/24 chassis ...
http://www.ncphobbies.com/124slotcar.html
anywhere from $15 to $120 and up. I think a $50 max cost is reasonable... $25 for chassis and $6-$12 for body leaves $15 or so for speed and dressup goodies, paint, etc. The buyout rule mentioned by modernbeat seems a good way to enforce it.

Mike, I used to race around 10 years ago.
Probably the best bang for the buck is a Flexi by Parma and/or JK (JK is actually from McHenry I think). They used to do a spec racer class at the now defunct Arlington Hobbies track. Easy to start.
If you get too hot a car, the rental controllers can't handle it & will overheat. Then, you'll be over budget.
The Flexi is a 1/24th scale ready to run for about $35 The only traditional body is a 33 Ford.
If you look hard enough though, you can find other bodies for $5 - $15. You might want to open the years to leaded gas cars.
By the way, Paradice moved to Algonquin (the town). They would be a better place to fit a dozen or so guys. Dad's is pretty small.

To all the Chicago HAMBer's,
A month or so ago I went to Al's Hobbies in Elmhurst to scope out parts and chassis' for 1/24th cars.
They told me they don't carry any 1/24th items at all. The retail slot car hobby is all 1/32nd now. Alot of Carrera stuff.
I was told the only way to find chassis or parts for 1/24th was to go to the Slotcar tracks themselves.
Well, I still think we should go with 1/24th scale, alot bigger selection of cool cars to start with.
Just a heads up! I hope we can do this. It would be great to do something this winter and get to know each other better as HAMBer's. I hope that doesn't sound too gay, does it? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

1/24th scale slot car primer
Ok. This is what I heve from 10 yrs ago & this is what I remember of the rules...
This is a basic 4" wheelbase flexi-chassis by JK. It comes similar to how you see it here. The front wheels are aftermarket - usually, the fronts are o-rings. Really, the only modifications for optimal performance are soldering. Solder the motor to the mount. Solder the rear axle bushings to the chassis tabs, and you might want to double-check the factory soldering on the leads.
The axle was 1/8". No bearings. I forget the ground clearance, but it can't scrape. It shouldn't anyway with normal tires.
An organized race consists of heats of about 2 minutes. There are usually 8 lanes on a regulation road course. You race once on each lane, so nobody gets screwed with the inside lane.
If I may be so bold, I suggest we race 'em out of the box, maybe upgrading the motors to balanced, allowing to change wheels for fashion's sake. If this is going to be a real competitive race, there should be some sort of body rule, pre 64 or something. Or even earlier. Maybe period classes. We'll have a hundrerd or so guys, right?
MrExotica
11-28-2003, 11:31 AM
here are a couple bodies & the chassis that had to be built to fit the old body.
This is a Cheetah. Don't ask me where I found it. I used to go to Dad's & look through the catalogs & order stuff. Although I raced sometimes, I still liked realism.
MrExotica
11-28-2003, 11:44 AM
This is the chassis I built for the Cheetah. It's a Parma Flexi with a Narrow (or Indy) pan. That motor is a balanced 16 (stock) motor. That's about as hot as the rental controllers can handle. As you can see, there is a home-made brace soldered to the front axle tabs. With the Indy chassis, there is no protection for the front axle. Bad for durability. This chassis likes to launch, & with the slightly hotter motor, it doesn't like to go in a straight line without a body with some downforce. A real squirrell!
MrExotica
11-28-2003, 11:47 AM
These are a couple bodies on an extended wheelbase chassis.
A Ford Talladega stock car...
MrExotica
11-28-2003, 11:49 AM
And a Chevy Impala lowrider. I don't remember what possesed me to paint it pink. The only regulations with the bodies were that they show 1/8" of bumper, so people didn't cut their bodies into an unrecognizeable wedge.
MrExotica
11-28-2003, 11:53 AM
This is the chassis for those bodies. I believe these bodies were labeled for 4 1/2" wheelbase, so it wasn't hit-or-miss. The chassis is a parma Flexi with a wheelbase extender. It uses a 1/8" solid front axle, which allows for more to-scale size wheels. The stock car class allowed a balanced motor because of the extra weight of the cars. Without the downforce of the newer car bodies, these babies love to fishtail & take out the guy in the next lane. The competitors didn't like that, And that didn't really make a fast car if it was sideways all the time.
MrExotica
11-28-2003, 12:00 PM
Also, the stock car required it, and I put them in all the cars they would fit in...

1 more from Mr. ExSPAMica.
I wandered over to Paradice Raceway in Algonquin today. Ready-to-run flexi cars cost around $50. One hour of free track time with every car purchase ($8 value). Rental of a track is $69.95 for 1/2 hour & $109.95 for 1 hour. That's $8.74 & $13.74 each respectively for 8 drivers. That includes controllers, beater cars, and track time. For comparison, rental of all therr costs $14. You save 26 cents. The guy there did say he would run a race for us. I didn't ask if we could get a deal with our own cars. That would have made sense.
Then again, if we all went there, bought a car, we'd all have one hour of track time. All we'd have to do is rent controllers for $2.50/hour.
Assuming you guys would want to do this on a weekend, keep in mind they have organized races on friday & saturday nights at 7 & drag racing Sunday at 2.
IF the decision to go to Paradice was made, I would suggest Saturday afternoon, for a better chance of having the place to ourselves.
I heard back from Paradise. Buy a RTR car for $50 get a free hour of track time. Rent your controller if you don't have one. simple as that. No rental. I assume other tracks would have similar deals.

Here's a 60's vintage Revell slotcar that a buddy gave me years ago:

Cripes..., how do you guys hold onto that stuff so long...? I sold my slot cars and a bunch of other doodads to pay for a four barrel carb for my 63 Gallaxy! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Whatever I didn't sell my younger brothers would steal, loose, or destroy...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

You can buy a ready-to-run car at any track & you usually get free track time. Just solder the motor to the mount, oil 'er up, & GO!

Stopped by "LUCKY BOB'S" in Milwacky the other day to price the 1/24th scale cars..., They run anywhere between $25 used to $70 for some new kits. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
There's not alot of "Traditional" body styles available. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I have found that the HO scale cars have many more options and body styles. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Should we run two different classes 1/24 and HO...? Or just stick to the 1/24th scale cars...?

HO is gay. You need to get the chassis that regular model car bodys go on. That way you can run whatever body you want.
these bodys are held on with velcro

I have been building and racing slot cars since i was about 5 or 6. My whole family was into the little sport untill 7/8s of the tracks dried up around my area. I still build some occationaly when im bored and race them on this little one lane course in my basement. Im willing to help out any one if they need a car, since i have tons in storage. 50 dollars for a quick competion car is really low but I guess do-able..
You guys know theirs different type motors,, meaning different classes from 16d (slow) to the fastest motor "group 7" and theirs different type of body styles for different tracks... a Wing car is good for long strait a-ways while a non wing car is good for curves and tight turns.. A drag set up is totaly different from these classes but i guess a normal car will do.
If any of you guys are interested in one of my cars just let me know, I will build you one, or give you the whole car for 50... Basicly with a group 12 or 24 motor, hand made frame or used chassie. I have old bodys too, never raced on and look prurdy ... give me some time to let my Dig Batterys charge and ill post up a few pics.
With me and my friends "slot car track" is code for the nudie bar! You know, in front of the wives and girlfriends...

Has anybody decided where this "Race Of Death" is going to be held...? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I don't think "Lucky Bob's" is a good choice since "Bleed" and his gang have been asked to leave the premises...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Difference between chassies... the one on the left is heavier but made for cuvey tracks .. the hand made one on the right is for speed!!! recomend this for strait tracks and for wing cars..

[/ QUOTE ] Try running Plastic kits ( like Revell or AMT) their abit heavyer, but its better if you hit a wall... MOst kits start at 50 to 200... 200 for "professionaly" built ... You guys can also rent crappy ones at the track for a few bucks, but their so damn slow..

hell no.
I've got to get moving. I still don't know anything about these things. I was kind of waiting for a date to be set before I started buying, but so far it's all been talk. No dates. Right now I don't care when or where.
I think we need to have a side race involving rocket cars/sleds though...

Feb 14th "St Valentines Day"..., what does everyone think about that day...? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I agree we should have Rocket and sled cars for the outdoor portion only..., (bad experience with high speed indoor pyrotechniques...!)! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

the 14th is probably ok for everyone who doesn't have a girlfriend. Otherwise you might get some protests.
rockets are definitely an outside thing. I need to fix Ankle Biter I and work on a sled "in case" there's snow on the ground.
