View Full Version : V-dubs in the traditional hot rod style

like em or not (and i don't really care if you don't so move on if all you have to do is bitch) they are gathering quite a folowing. i personaly have always liked Beetles as an orange 66 was my first car i got when i was 13. i spent nearly 3 years dreaming (and drawing) up all kinds of wild plans for that car. i had no skills, no tools and no money so they were all simple do it at home for CHEAP ideas. like making it a woody wagon or putting a model A style bed on the back of one and choppin the roof right off while i was cutting that back off anyway. i had all these ideas as a kid and the VWs appealed to me cause even to a teenager these cars and their parts were CHEAP.
i never did anything more than tear that car right down to it's most basic pieces (it's easy takin em apart) but even though i've been a hot rodder since damn near birth i've always liked those little Bugs.

at any rate. the point of this is to show a few trad hot rod styled V dubs that i've found and see what you may have found. we started touching on this in CherryBlossom's photoshop post but it was kinda getting off the subject so i thought i would bring it here so all those interested could get a chance to see some of the killer things you can do with a VW Beetle and still keep within the traditional hot rod "style". i do realize that "back in the day" there prolly were'nt too many Bugs (if any) done in this style but we all kinda have put our own little spin on the traditional hot rod theme so why not try the V0dub rod on for size. whats it gonna hurt?

BTW. check out the newest issue of VWTRENDS (May 2004, just out on newsstands this week) for a BUNCH of "Hot Rod VWs".

i'll start this off with a couple examples i found. the first couple are not my favorites but interesting none the less and might be a cause of insperation to someone.

The first from Alf is a photo manipulation that I did
for a guy,
on Volksrods.com,experimenting with wheelbase ideas.
He reversed the front trailing arms to move the wheels forward.
I moved them a little further.

hey!!!! it's my car!!!! the first photo alf posted, is a photochop of the car i'm currently workin' on. unk. whipped it up for me. car will have radir's out back with sprint car tires, and either some 10 spoke americans or sumpthin else skinny out front. suicide tank between the wheels. rake chop, narrowed 49 ford dash,(unless i can find a rambler american dash, anybody wanna trade?) already has orange and black tuck n' roll interior. probably gonna get away from the flat black, mabye a patina'd factory grey. and of course, a whole lot of Robert Hamilton way kool art on it.
car has a 2332 cc vw motor. scat forged crank, carillo rods, ported/polished heads, and the ever popular 48IDA weber carbs. all msd ign. and a little bit o' nitrous, just for laughs.

the vw today, is like the 32 fords of back when. they are cheap to modify and fix up, very plentiful, they were designed in '38 so they share alot of the same styling cues as american cars of the same era. you can stick a v8 in one. or a rotary, how bout a pinto motor? or just build a bad ass vw motor.
if you're looking for a cheap car to have fun with, try a vw. take two home, they're small !!!

Ok, I'll jump in....
I am a bug owner, not by choice, but by luck.
last year I was GIVEN a mint condition '73 vert Super Beetle, Karmann edition. It was a gift from a friend. It is about the cleanest Beetle I have ever seen. Aftermarket A/C, CD player, 140W amp, new interior, new engine, new paint, new top... hell, everything is new...
All I have done to it is add some Empi 5 spoke rims and some new tread. (yeah I put 5 spokes on my '73, I had to use wheel adaptors, but I hate the 8 spokes that are avaliable in the late model bolt pattern) and remove the bumpers. The only thing left I have planned to do to it is drop it as low as I can get it...
Here are some pic's of it when it was given to me...

I love Vdubs! If it hadn't have been for the cheap prices of them in the early 90's I might not have ever got into cars at all. Here was my first custom car ever, after this I got a 59 Chopped bug although it is in various parts right now. This is a really cool post- it is nice to see the examples that have been put on here.

When I was in my teens and twenties VW's were all I drove. I had as many as 7 at a time. I've owned every model made except the Thing. And wanted one of them. I modified those rascals with everything possible at the time including multiple carbs (Solex', Webers, Holleys), blowers, cams and even once a Porsche drivetrain. My all time favorite though was running a Corvair Monza engine in a beetle with the 2 stage, 4 carb setup. Scariest machine I ever drove. Even with the trunk full of tools and concrete blocks it would do a wheelie at any speed in any gear. Just punch it and see the sky.

The other day I grabbed a VW magazine just for something different to look at. Looks like a lot of the buggy parts could be used for a hot rod, i.e. fuel tanks, steering columns, seats, etc.?? The stuff is pretty cheap too.
Like someone else said earlier, a well done car is a well done car, no matter what it is.

VWs were how I got started on the whole car thing. I have posted pictures of my old flamed split windowed bug here before but I don't have those pictures on my new computer. I had a good time with that car and after it received it's turbo, it was quite a handful.
It is an easier jump from a german car designed in the '30s to a traditional Ford hot rod than most people think. I think old Mr. Porsche went to see Ford's set-up before starting the Stuttgart plant up.

Gas prices sky-rocketing???!?!?!? Are you having a laugh?!?!? US is one of the cheapest places to buy petrol (or gas as you lot call it!) We pay around $6 dollars for 1 US Gallon (roughly converted) so think yourselves lucky!

You know what I do have one bitch about VW since no one else will bring it up... why are the parts for the the old flat 4's so much cheaper then for my Ford Sled. That is about the only bitch that I have. It is amazing that you can build a VW engine at about a dollar a CC. I had a buddy that had a split window here that we nicknamed Bitching Camero just for kicks and giggles. Half the mullet guys here in Oklahoma couldn't ever figure out how a VW could run with the Cameros. Pretty funny stuff I think.

That bus brought the bank because it is a "Barndoor". Barndoors were pre-1955 if I remember correctly. Notice it has no turn signals over the headlights and no overhang above the windshield. Tiny taillights and the "barn door" engine lid. The Barndoor is the '32 Ford of busses. The 23 window Deluxe Barndoor would be the Deuce roadster (or coupe, depending on your taste) of busses.

I've always liked bugs, just back in the rust belt of WV, it was hard to find one. They seem to be a dime a dozen here in CA though! Nice ones too!

I've always wanted to get a Ghia, and stick a GM front drive (citation) unit under the rear. Maybe a 4.3, but probably a 350 V-8. That would be interesting. I've got some pics somewhere of a beetle with a 76 Eldo frame under the rear of it.. pretty stupid looking, a real death rod. On the other hand, what was that company that used to make tube VW chassis that used Eldo transaxles in the rear? They used to advertise in the back of HotRod in the 80's... anyone remember the name of that company? I always wanted one of those chassis...

I got on the HAMB late tonight and was going to post about the latest issue of VW trends. If you have not seen it look at it for a good laugh and some really cool cars. I myself still have a 64 notchback and some Empi stuff around. I had a notchback featured in vw trends in the mid 1990's. The vw is where I cut my teeth on how to work on cars and then moved up to hot rods. The shop I work at specializes in vw air and watercooled, but will work on anything. When I get my 32 5 window done I have thought about building my notchback pulling from the hot rod world and build one that looks stock from the outside but has V8 drive train in it, just another project waiting in the wings.

Here's a picture of the first one I owned and painted that new metalic brown they had just come out with on Buick Rivieras in 1967.
It's a '61 I bought in 67 for the insanely high price of $365 but I just had to have it anyway! (sold the POS 9 months later for $750 and bought a '57 TR-3 for $240)
The next two (in a row) were a '67 with a 914 Porsche engine I lost to the first Ex, and then a '62 that i sold to buy a '65 Sunbeam Alpine.

(60's bugs made to look like 40's Hot Rods are still gay...) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I was just thinking about this and I remember the bugs with the poorly cast fake 40 Ford grills and the wavy bad glass hood that went with them.
I have to think that the poor finish and fit of most of them is what's bad about them, becasue in concept, they are not much different from a '36 Ford sporting a Packard grill or a '46 Ford with a Cadillac grill grafted on the front end, with a lot of lead and not always flowing part transitions.
We call the latter traditional 40's style customs.
Are Westergard customs Gay? NO WAY!
Is it because they were "kits"?
Barris andfriends had roof C pillars prefabbed just to make chopping tops on 40's Fords easier...That's at least a similar thing.
Then there's prefabbed mail order tube grills for every car made just about.
A bug is a 1937 German version of Airflow style car.
They have as much right to be hotrodded as a '37 Zepher or a 52 Topolino.
I think what gets most goats is the fact that you could buy a brand new "1937" car in the 60s and fix it up like any other "fat fender"era car without having to deal with barn spiders and rust and scarce parts.
It was and still is too EASY!
So it irritates the heck out of people who are still looking for that fourth perfect Fiesta hubcap.

Speaking of Dr.J ... I think it would look good with a airflow grille too. This one is a Fiat 500. Just imagine a flathead behind that grille, move the firewall back just a bit so it would fit. I think bugs are custom fodder as much as anything else, after all it is a 40's car for all intents and purposes. Just imagine if Ford made the Model A or Deuce for 40 years with basic chassis updates along the way...

IDK if this has been mentioned, I had too many Sam Adams to read thru all 12 pages, but I read somewhere that Virgil Extner actually was the one who designed the Ghia, for Chrysler, around the mid fifties, but the top brass at Chrysler rejected it as too radical... it was in some book about fifties cars my dad got off half.com. Anyone know if that's true?

BTW, that K-G on the first page slammed, I convinced my wife THAT is the VW we need... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And I tried talking my brothers friend who has a new Jetta (bright red too) into putting a triple wing on the decklid and calling it the "Red Baron"... somehow, he didn't see the humor like I did. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i gotta say that saying cal look bugs are off topic in my opinion is wrong. the cal look as it is known was started in the 60s. are all the 60s style customs here OT? i don't think so. maybe i say that because in both cases thats what i have always built. i, like alot of guys here cut my teeth on vws. i've loved those cars for a long time. unless you count my wife's New Beetle i haven't owned one for a long time. this thread has me wanting to build another cal look bug so bad i can taste it. even considered putting an add in the paper and selling the '55 plymouth to fund the venture. alas the plymouth is to far into the project for that now. the bug will come i've never stopped thinking about them and theres a few nice cal lookers around here to remind me. that and i've still got a set of BRMs stuff away from past plans. but back to the issue if 60s style cars fit in here so do cal look bugs of the same era...ken....

Here is a 57 ghia I built some 10 years ago. Back then most people were restoring those old ghias to stock condition. So the flat paint and racing decor was something of a protest I guess. I`ve never liked to go mainstream http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I was heavily involved with vws back then, and have built several custom bugs, buses, a buggy and this ghia. But I got so bored with it when the resto trend boomed. Whats the challenge in a lowered restored stocker? Time was ready to move on to Hot Roddin early Fords. That is the only true Hot Rod nostalgia in my opinion. I have kept a 58 convertible bug however, just never now if I get the urge to hear that flat four sound again. Fun to see this new Vw-Rod trend tho. Some of those bugs look bitchin.

I think the split between the VW crowd and the ""Street Rodder" crowd only goes back about 15-20 years when the VW crowd bacame a predominantly younger "punk" crowd and the street rodder crowd became an ever more sedentary "gold chainer crowd who banned "Those rowdy punks with their VWs and Mini Trucks" from "Street Rod" events.
Now it seems that gold chainer attitude has been inherited by the few "punks" who made the transition from VWs to"Hotrods"

Being anti-VW is being Gold Chainer!

if the "New Traditional Rodder" was to cast off all the grumpy ld fart's ways they would be accepting VWs and even Mini Trucks with open cruise/show gates. Otherwise they (YOU) are being, and having the same attitudes in the same way about VWs as the dreaded "Street Rodders" have for the past two decades.

Did you know that except for the rear seat shoulder room width, a VW bug has the same interior space of a GTO?
I read that in a magazine back in the 60s and just remembered it....
