Actually it hasn't changed as much as you think. Mostly bolt on crap, but underneath it's still butt ugly!

I sure hope it's changed a lot, because I can't comprehend anyone voting that thing the most beautiful roadster in America.

If you have this book http://www.pitstop.net.au/pitstop/upload/product/13597.jpg Go to page 35, pic 8, Jerry Woodwars "Thunder Rod".

Say' it was a "Controversial" choice. I should say so myself.

JimA is right...it really hasn't changed as much as you'd hope

I don't think anyone ever accused that guy of having good taste. I have a copy of "Rodding and Restylng" with it on the cover. The guy probably should have his head examined for building it in the first place, let alone bolting all that pompous shit on it later on.

However...Like it or not, that thing is a piece of hot rod history, and probably should be "restored" back to its AMBR winning appearance. If for no other reason than as an example of how NOT to build a roadster.

Well it does have possibilities, but why dump a load on one you're gonna change anyway?

Explains why we all think it's butt ugly, at least.

I'm more worried about the judges (yes, more than one person) that picked that THING for AMBR!

I thought the car that had the title of most controversial winner was the one that had the dual slicks on one giant wheel in the back…or maybe the was the converted Kookie T that had those…man, I don’t think I really want to see it but does anyone have pics of the car when it won? I am sure I have seen them before but I just can’t remember what it looked like other than the funky headlights.

The book say's it was a contraversial winner of that show. Not of all time.

Byron Crump

Hmmm, actually I do not think I remember ever seeing this car before...it looked better then than now though. What was the car with the dual slicks in back on the extra wide wheels I am thinking of?

KIRK!

That was was VERY controversial. The judges were required to be completely high on crack during their duties. Ugly then..ugly now.

I've seen roadsters similar to that before, but still don't understand what goes through someone's mind to build such a ugly car.

Since when is it in style to have the grill shell higher than the cowl? I think you guys are right, the judges were all high. But then again why not, they were high this year too for not picking Shine's Ardun Roadster.--Why does it seem like the judges vote for Liberacce "Vegas" glitzy shit and not Southern Cal hot rod slick? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gifTV

If he was that high when he built that car, I'm sure there's enough residue left over for him to want more than that.

Car did look better back then but I think it could be used for the raw material for something much cooler than either version. Come on guys, you don't want to just scrap it do you?

Remember, this was in 1957.
Who was the promoter of the show in 1957?
What were the other entries?

Was crack invented then?
Or was the uncut stuff the mainstreamer of the day?

I read the details about the car, the R&C issue must have been before the AMBR. Not much to report back, the car cost $900 and 8 months to build. The body was bashed in at the trunk lid, A frame rails with a 40 X member scabbed in and the 96 inch wheel base dictated the body's size.
R&C also said that he was going to build a rear engine 3 wheeler.
After looking at the photos in R&C, and compairing them to egay, it looks like the owner tried to update the thing.
I think it looked much better in 57.

LOL, I said the same thing when I read that. Maybe the plates are cut out in the shape of a fish or a Carvel"Fudgie the Whale" ice cream cake.

Merc50 - the famous T-bucket with dual read tires was Norm Grabowski's trend setting T from 77 Sunset Strip. After he sold it to a guy that owned the Golden Sahara the guy put on four rear tires, four headlights, two blowers and other assorted stuff to make it "right" for the show circuit at the time. Last I heard the guy still has it locked up in Dayton OH. Any Ohio HAMBers got the current word on Norm's T?

a fish plate is in the shape of a diamond and placed over a butt weld to reinforce.

That car won an award? For what? Looks like a hot rod crashing into a Kragen's stock truck. That's so horrible.

Actually, that cover picture on R&C has a few differences. The headlights are single on the cover of R&C, but double in the black and white photo, and the ebay auction.

Also, The dash has changed from the cover car to the ebay auction.

i remember reading an article about the 50th anniversary of the gnrs that mentioned the '57 winner was something they wanted to forget or was too ugly to print photos of or something like that. thank's for the pics, as i wondered what the car looked like. the article was right.

I don't think that the rice stuff is as bad... oh hell yeah it is- butyat least those turds don't want an arm and a leg for that tupe of crap... then again they most likely think that the fart pipe rice car is some great introduction to the "custom world" whatever this is awful!
