Booking bands for events...musicians I have a couple of ?

It has been bestowed upon me, the duty of booking a band for the"Big Kahuna Hot Rod Luau" in June. I am needing a surf or beach type of a band....circa 1960ish. How would a guy go about finding a band to fit a need like this? I have asked everyone in town, music stores, local papers etc.

If you call a booking agent, say out of the phone book, are the musicians usually under contract with these guys?? Or could you hire the band directly cheaper?

First off here's some info on a talent agency in your city that handles a friend of mines band here in Tulsa. His band is more "red dirt" type music so he couldn't help, but his agency might give you a place to start. (Box Talent Agency, 405-360-2263, Jeff Scheel-booking agent.

A band from Tulsa that might fit what your lookin for could be the "bopcats" It's some older guys around here that play late 50's earlier 60's rocknroll/beachboys type songs. One of the singers is Rockin John Henery who does the Smokehouse Blues radio show on KMOD here. He also has another show on the oldies Kool 106.1 station. If John could'nt help you he'd know everyone that could.

You can also sometimes get the band cheaper if you go outside their agency but it just depends on the contract they have and how sly the event can be. If it's too big and the agency gets wind they'll want their cut.

Thanks. I saw a surf band here in OKC a year or so ago and they were a couple of brothers from Tulsa. I can't remember their names for the life of me...................
