View Full Version : Rustoleum Paint for Cars?
Well I am getting ready to throw some paint on the T....and I would like to see what opinions people have on rustoleum for car paint. I am going to go with a pale yellow/tan for the majority of the body with maroon accents. Any thoughts?

I've done it before...it's cheap, you can buy it by the quart at the local hardware store...but if you ever plan on doin a "real" paintjob it will all have to come off...and it is a bitch to DA. I would do it again if I was low on funds

I bet he does.
Tim if you insist on doing it anyway, I suggest you use a live chicken as a brush. The texture from the bird struggling and it's feathers will only add to the 'rustic' appeal.
Is it that bad? Can someone explaint to me what exactly would the result be? I seem to remember a CK Delux that had an A painted with it and it looked fine? I am not set on it...please understand...just wondering.

Nads, I had a buddy from Florida back in the 70's who used to call red rods with wide whites & white tuck&roll voo-doo rods. Never figured it out till just now. Blood and white chicken feathers...
Now help me clean this damned coffee off my screen and keyboard!

Tim - You going to Spring Meet @ Daytona this weekend? If so I'll have some REAL paint that i will GIVE you, you just have to buy the reducer. (but dont be picky about the color) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
let me know!
IMHO - The problem is that almost most any solvent paint or primer that goes over it in the future will cause it to wrinkle & lift since it is a pure enamel paint and it fades fast which maybe what you want?

I dont think rustoleum is a acrylic or synthetic enamel its probably oil based... just get some cheap synthetic enamel and the reducer with the inigrated clear and use acrylic hardner... thats what we do on our cheapie 699 paint jobs.... and dont ask me why on the acrylic hardner in the synthetic paint but it works better.
Actually I have to play a show on Sat so I will not be there but dv8 and voodoo will be there. No need to bring any paint for me though...I'll pic up some automotive paint soon enough...I was just curious.

I used the semi-gloss Rustoleum for outdoor furniture on my
A. It is holding up fine in the sun and can be cleaned
much easier than the DP90.
I, however, don't ever plan on doing body work or putting
shiny paint on this car.

Try tractor supply enamal with TS hardner. Cheap at 14.00 per QT. and will hold up but it s still enamal. Any color as long as there is atractor that color. Jd blitz black is just fine.

I would not use rustoleum but that has been said already many times. My two cents -- Keep in mind what good automotive paint costs. Paint is expensive but alot of that expense is in the name brands and in the many coats of primers and etc. If you are going to just shoot a top coat with a qt. or two of rustoleum, compare that to the price of a qt. or two of automotive paint. I picked up a gallon of black omni single stage paint last month. $85 retail/$60 shop price. Quart should be $20-30. There is also the price for a little hardener and thinner but you need the thinner for rustoleum also. I think the extra few bucks for real paint is worth it. Neal
So I guess real auto paint it is....truth be known the only real reason for this post was to give Sinner irritable bowel syndrome(IBS)...which is what happens everytime I mention painting the car with Rustoleum.

Just go to the dollar store and buy 10 cans like you did last Saturday. Also be sure to NOT wipe it down with etch beforehand. Or I'm sure Jaime has some PINK or some other leftover Mopar color laying around.

Hmmmm, $6 quart of rustoleum Vs $35 plus hardner, plus reducer.
I stand by the Rustoleum, plus my car stopped rusting http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Go for it. that's the only stuff i use on metal anymore. it even holds up the bonneville salt real well.my modified would not feel confortable without it. it even matches well from one spray can to another!!!!!!.

So can you do a decently shiny durable paint job with Rustoleum or is it just the "can't paint over it" thing?

I used the John Deere Blitz black on my winter beater Porsche and it's got a few chips from the winter gravel used on the streets. Otherwise, it still looks ok. BTW, I have absolutely no plans to paint this car any other color in the future.....and if I sell it, the new owner can deal widdit. The paint cost me $22 a gallon.

Nads you'r fkng crazy!!! Still laughing my ass off. Previous posts stated that Rustoleum is fish oil based and would have to be absolutely and totally removed if anyone EVER wants to recoat the car with anything other than more Rustoleum. By the way I heard that Tyler (flt-blk) had to use Rustoleum because someone threatened to bring over a bottle of rust remover and make his truck disappear! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you're looking for the cheapest way to paint a car, you can't go wrong with Duplicolor paint. Pep Boys, etc sell it for $30 - $50 per gallon depending on the color and reducer is another $8. I think it's cheaper than Rustoleum and it looks pretty good.

Rocky's right. I have heard the John Deere Paint is great, but by time I called them they stopped caring it in California! So back to rustoleum, or take a trip to vegas! Satin
