September 17th - 19th.

The Dallas Model A Ford Club is currently the only group allowed to have swap meets at the Ballpark in Arlington.

Earhart Production's who held the other swaps at the Arlington was told by the city that he will not be allowed to hold another one there.

In fact, eventually he gets told not to return to every swapmeet location that he tries to hold.

They tried to move the swap meet to the old naval airstrip not too far from the Ballpark, but the permit was denied sometime in the last month or so.

Here's the website: http://www.oldcarswap.net/

I know Dean, the guy that put on the Ballpark swap, personally and he's not a bad guy. In fact he's from Waco, and has been putting on swap meets with his son for years.

I believe he can't do the swap at the Ballpark anymore because he didn't want to hire overnight security for the people that stayed on the grounds after dark. The 'city' (I think) got pissed when he wouldn't play by their rules and tell the vendors they couldn't stay in their motorhomes or whatever. So basically he pissed the wrong people off and they won't let him hold it there anymore. I'm not 100% sure of details, as all of this is secondhand info. Personally, I think he fucked up...but that doesn't give anyone the right to talk trash about him.

Elrod is a member of the Dallas Model A Ford Club, by the way.

And since there's a void left by all this, why can't the Model A Club take their Geritol and have a spring meet as well?

Hey. I didn't mean to get on Bass' bad list or anything, but I guess I have been on your nerves in the past few posts for some reason.

But as a swap meet attender, as well as a Model A Club Member, it's kind of a drag to have to move all over the place because the promoter messed up their venue. Also, it's frustrating to have to fight extra hard as a club to prove to the city of Arlington that it will not make the same mistakes. The Dallas Model A club almost lost it's major source of fundraising because he angered the city of Arlington.

The Dallas Model A Club isn't in the business of holding swap meets. Therefore, they aren't going to "take their Geritol" and start doing more.

But Earheart is in that business. So you would think he would learn to play by the rules. I would also think that the venders would get tired of buying spaces at a swap meet that keeps getting canceled.

Carl's corner is May 14th, 15th, and 16th.

Guess I need to use more smilies. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Anyway, that was not a personal attack or anything...just trying to fill in a little of the gray area.

Carl's Corner swap is towards the end of May....don't have the exact date in front of me. It's getting better, but it'll be a while before it's as good as the spring Ballpark swap. FWIW, I think the swap meet that the Model A Club puts on is and has been the best one at the Ballpark, and I'm glad those guys take the time to put it on.

But hot-rodders don't always play by the rules...that's for restorers. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (see I used a smiley that time)

I'm with you Bass.... I don't want to start any personal attacks with you, either. I didn't know that Earheart was a friend of yours, and so for that, I'm sorry for painting a negative picture of his business practices. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I too found a good deal out at the Carl's corner swap... An aluminum dual intake for early MoPar inline motor.

I also agree that there need to be more swaps around here. I need to put my coupe together!

He's not really a friend, more of an acquaintance...but you get the idea. No sweat.

One of the guys that puts on the Carl's Corner swap IS a family friend, though...so I'd really like to see that one take off. It's got the potential to be as good as the old Pate, but it's still kind of immature since it's only been around for a few years. They've put a lot of work into promoting it...The only problem is that it doesn't have the local traffic that is built into a DFW area swap meet. People actually have to drive to get to this one....which was the deal with the old Pate as well, so it is possible that it can be big some day. They've definitely got the room.

Last year was a big improvement, let's hope the weather cooperates this year and the swap turns out even better.

Carl's corner isn't that far, I'll do my part to help it grow.
Elrod, maybe you know the old lady that was bashing my car
when I pulled out of the parking lot because it was not
restored. She was wearing one of those gay red vests and
pretending to be important.

Yeah, she was a real treat...I remember it was hot and you could smell her and that worn leather and Bengay scent in the heat http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Amen man, I miss the old Pate...only place I ever saw a Tucker for sale and the stuff you would see at it boggles the mind...Mercallacs built in the 50's, roadsters from the 40's and 50's...if I only knew then and had the money http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Come on now Bass. I heard reason it was canceled was because of some HotRod Death Race between 2 wicked Ford coupes. I think it was over the rights to see who got to race Milner or something like that. But thats just what I heard. (insert smiley here) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can,t beleive the Navel station meet was canceled now. I thought that was ready and set to go. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Them's pretty strong words. Pate was pretty amazing back in the mid 80's-early 90's. That was back when I had time to go to swap meets.

I hope Carl's gets that good. I've got Fridays off now, so I should be able to get to some swaps.

Ok now that thats clear....When is Pate and when and where in the hell is Carls Corner????

Bass
03-18-2004, 10:02 AM
Yeah, I know those are pretty strong words...but they've got the room, and a pretty decent location that's really not much further from Dallas than Pate was. It's got the right "feel" too, since it's held in a pasture like Pate was. (doesn't have the cool old airplanes to play in, though)

The only thing they're still missing is the reputation needed to get the vendors in the swap. That takes time to build...but if it keeps improving year after year, in ten years time I really believe it could be something like Pate used to be.

Right now people are still unsure if they should take the time to go out there or not. My advice is to go...but keep your expectations low for the first time you go. If the vendors are selling, word will get around and draw more vendors and more parts. Eventually that snowballs and we have something that resembles the way Pate used to be.

It's up to us...the guys that love swap meets to make these things grow. I'm not just saying all this because I know one of the guys helping to put it on, but because I really miss Pate, and I do think this could be the replacement if cared for and nurtured properly.

With the absence of the Ballpark meets (which were getting really good IMHO), there's a need for a really strong spring swap meet, and the new "Pate" at the Texas Motor Speedway just doesn't seem like the best candidate anymore.

It is another that's still worth going to, but has been dwindling in size over the past couple of years as people are realizing that it just doesn't have the 'feel' of the old Pate. And I do always find good stuff there, because there are diehards that are going to go to Pate no matter where its held.

I found good stuff at Carls Corner too...a $1.00 copper metalflake Cal Custom steering wheel, a $10.00 F-1 pedal assembly, a $5.00 pair of 15" International truck wheels that accept early ford caps, and a $25.00 '28-29 A cowl...to name a few.

Maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, but I'm going to do what I can to support my local (and not so local) swap meets.

I always pegged you for a hopeless romantic.

Doesn't mean you are wrong about the swaps, though. I can't believe they still call it Pate. Doesn't seem the same at all. Carl's does have the space, and it's about the same distance from Dallas. Closer for Austin, Houston, and S.A. folks. Maybe it'll grow into a goodern.
