I was talking to my uncle the otehr night who built up a 383 back in the early 70's. It never made it into a car and he's got it all in his garage. Anyway... He mentioned he has a Hurst Ram shifter. He claims it has no left-right movement, but uses a release to select 1-2 or 3-4 gears. Anyone have any info on this shifter and what it might be worth. It's for a new process 4spd.

Its like a vertical gate from mr gasket Hurst calls it a ram rod. their noisey and you have to cut a hole in the floor the size a st bernard with a weight problem could climb through. Its a cool shifter in a old hotrod though..
sounds like a verticle gate, I had one on a Muncie, if it's like mine they are good heavy shifters that are easy to setup and adjust
takes a little getting used to the pattern but they are good shifters.
here's mine

Used to be popular with racers in the early 70's. But then they don't need to get in and out of reverse much. Some swear by them, others swear at them.

Not be brag or sound like a fag but I had one in my 69 GTO Judge back in the High School (mid 80's), it was a Hurst V gate and I loved that thing...none of my auto shop goon buddies could out shift me or catch me with that thing http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
My original 4 speed reverse was a little weak also with the regular 4 speed and the V gate solved the problem with the seperate lever and ended the "if you can't find it grind it" issues that would come up from time to time...I could bang the hell out of that thing and plus no worries about a mis-shift.

when i had mine i'd always get it stuck in neutral when i'd try to switch it to drive burn out,and not just me,the local old legend who's been kustomizing cars since everyone's daddy was in diapers.i just hate it cuz it's a hassle and looks ugly..might be ok in a racer or muscle car,but not in my car.
