Lets take a short trip down memory lane....

In the summer of 2002 there was a little flathead-powered, purple T-bucket at the NSRA Nats in Louisville, KY. It had '35 Ford wire wheels, no radiator, no headlights, and a black top on a piano hinge across the top of the cowl. It looked like a purple egg when closed.

Anyone remember it? anyone have any pics of it?

Thanks, JH

That's it. Looks like it had acquired headlights by this time though. It also looks like he might have ditched the flip-top "lid" that was on it also.

When was this pic taken? Any idea?

Anyone have any more pics of this car?

Thanks, JH

I think his name is Steve Grimes. He's from the east coast somewhere. He did one with a Crosley engine in it. Cars are real simple, but with lots of detail. Notice the front hub covers on the purple car. I think most of them are farigrounds cars, but I could be wrong. My only contact with them has been through magazines. All of them look really cool. I've had the hots to build a clone of the Hilborn Streamliner for a few years but I find out a few months back that a clone is near completion in So-Cal somewhere so I've kinda switched gears to something similar to this and the Hilborn car.

I saw a pic of the Crosley-powered car he did now that you mention it. Silver & red if I remember correctly. Anyone have a pic of that car? Seems like I saw it in some coverage of the Indy Hot Rod Happening last year.

As spring and summer approach I'll get back out hunting parts. It shouldn't be hard to scratch up enough parts to screw one of these together.

Thanks, JH

Again with the bare engine in front? This one looks like it definitely has NO radiator - but I've been wrong before. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif So what are your plans for something similar to this and the hilborn car? Solid axles? No radiator? T-body?

The purple car had the radiator under the turtle deck with water lines running through the frame rails. With the top on it, it was the craziest looking thing I have ever seen. All bowed up like a stink bug.

My thoughts? Really narrow frame, narrowed body, and a flathead. I'm wanting to put a flathead in something really bad and this would be a cheap way to do it. Something simple to blast around town in. Homemade RPU body or cut a 'glass '23 T. I'd want to run 1/4 elliptic springs on each corner and run a stock Ford front and rear (banjo) axle on Ford wishbones. '40 Ford wheels. Simple and cheap are the key words.

Harrison -- I don't now of any clones of Danny Sakai's lakester. It would be a relatively easy build, other than the chin and the grille surround. They could be made up of bits from existing fenders or done in fiberglass. Even the LaSalle grille shape could be done in expanded metal or heavy-gauge stainless screening.

Just a thought . . .

AV/8 that is a cool car. I don't have the Don Montgomery books and heve never seen many of these old modifieds.

The greatest expense would have to be the engine. I had a Crosley engine a year ago that a guy gave me. I want to do a Flathead but that Crosley would have been perfect. I should have kept it.

The body would be easy using pieces from fenders, roofs, etc...
