I need a little help with the plumbing on a stock style oil filter canister for my 40 merc flathead. When I got the car it had no filter, don't think it ever did, kind of scary! I found one on ebay, fits the stock location on the left head. Now I need to run the lines to the block (which I don't have yet). Can someone tell me which port on the block hooks up to which connection on the canister? There is a bottom fitting and a side fitting on the canister. The block has a plugged port above the oil pressure sender and another below the sender. Also, where is a good place to find replacement cartridges for the stock canister?
Thanks alot guys!

From the back side outlet (top is for the pressure sender)of the block, THRU A RESTRICTOR, into the side of the filter. Out the bottom of the filter to the lower part of the block where it dumps into the crankcase.
The restrictor MUST be in place to limit flow.
Filter is still available from Fram, Hastings (LF-101), Motorcraft, AC and others as it is/was used into the 80's on industrial and farm equipment.

The Fram filter # is C3P.

But then, nobody would actually use a Fram filter in anything but their swap meet pickup or their mother-in-law's car....

Those oil filters are not very effective (approx 10% effective) and can cause more problems (leaks) than they are worth. Unless you want one installed for the looks (beehive style, chrome canister style, etc..), I would just change your oil more frequently. The better solution to the flathead oil filtering problem is to install a full flow oil system that now is available. Of course, you want to do this next time you have the engine out.
You might want to ask more questions about the canister style oil filtering sytem here, or on Fordbard.com, or the Early V8 Forum.
