View Full Version : got to spend a couple minutes on the rod today..
After months of real life distractions I finaly got to spend a little time on the rod..
I bought some 3" stainless tube the other day, had it expanded to fit the big 2Gs, and today I trimmed and started polishing.
The object is not only to get the earlier look (60's vs 70's) but also to see what happens when you put the ram before the carbs instead of after:

Oh yeah,
heh heh, even with all the clutter in the new shop from the move, I couldn't stand it, I had to wire the compressor and put some air to the lift to make sure it goes up and down,
kinda got all funny feelin' with that big shaft goin' up and down and in and out of ol' Mother Earth!

Paul, Good to see you start getting the shop in order, I still remember moving into mine. As I recall this was a dream of yours to get a bigger place and have more conveniences to work with. It took me 4/5 years to get my hoist operating, just too much to do and little money. After saving for 25 years to build our dream home and shop it still took a few more to put the finishing touches on it. After all the time I wasn't sure if the hoist wasn't frozen in the cylinder. After putting a little air to it, surprise, it just floated out of the ground. Anyway, congrats on the progress.

paul, i think the problem with your ram is that, well, i don't think it will 'ram'...
unless i'm mistaken, the function a tunnel ram performs is to accelerate the intake charge so that it's travelling at higher velocity to force its way into the cylinders.
this is achieved by reducing the cross sectional area of the passage the the air is travelling through. if the same VOLUME of air tries to pass through a smaller cross sectional AREA, the velocity must increase to compensate.
in the case of your induction tubes, the cross sectional area is non-varying, and as such i don't believe you're going to experience any ramming effect.
luckily for you, it looks punk rock. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I love the look! Just what I was looking for to spiff up my 4 single barrels on my ancient Hemi. What do you have in mind for air cleaners? Let us know how it works.
autocol,
I am sure you are right, the tubes are way to fat to get a ram effect, I would think 2" diameter might be a better starting point.
I just like the look http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Rocky, no filters, but I will put some fine mesh stainless screen in them to keep the bigger junk out.

Bitchen'!
I can't wait to see it installed...
The stacks look like the ones Harold Graves had on a SBC set up that was in The Book of Engines article...
Neat.
