Still fooling around with motorvating ideas (until some one gives me a Seagrave V12). I noticed that the Packard Super 8 and the later 327 St 8 had a 3.5 inch bore. So does the Olds Quad 4. Coincidence?
Well OK, the bore centers are WAY off.

So I was wondering how stupid/expensive it would be to cut that Olds head (2 of'em) into 8 little bitty individual pieces to give me the right bore spacing...and weld them back together (with spacers...with water passages etc.)
Or...how bout casting a NEW one (in two parts, say split horizontally for coolant/oiling etc) then bolt up the valvetrain align bore etc.
OR...how about welding up a SHEET metal head like Charles Taylor did with the whole Crosley engine(!)...THEN set up the valvetrain etc.

Here's some links to a '61 HOT ROD article about a later Taylor engine.

Didn't Seagraves use the same motors as Packard?
I found this on Hemmings.com:

PACKARD 1937 12-cyl engine, totally rebuilt iron heads, complete with manifolds, water pump, fan and clutch, this 12 engine turns free and is priced below what it would cost to rebuild, $7,950 fob, Pittsburgh. Les, 239-404-1673, FL. Category: Collector Date Posted: 02/19/04

If you need something BIG,an Allison,or Rolls Royce Griffin would make a nice motor.

As if Quad 4 heads don't have enough problems!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If you would build a block out of sheet metal, and use 2 production heads it might be less machine work.
Or you could do like the guy that built a replica of an old Alfa Romeo, he welded two Alfa 4 cylinder engines together to make a straight 8 .
Another way to get a really big engine would be to use a block and crank from an 18 Wheeler and build a head to make it run on gas ( or alcohol like the Tractor Puller Guys do...)

Ooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....you could hit some of the army surplus stores for an M-88 engine....an m-88 is also called a VTR...Vehicle-Tank-retreiver. It's a killer gasoline V/16 of 1790 cu.in. with overhead cams, 4 magnetos and puts out 1000 hp. This thing has a lumpy idle and the noise is unbelievable! These things will push a 58 ton tracked vehicle along at 60-70 Mph. They came with an automatic tranny but it all weighs a bunch!

I just saw this post on inliners.org so I thought I'd bump the thread...

IT CAN BE DONE!

Welding together OHC heads would be a Bitch
trying to get all the cam bearing saddles lined up.
And then you find out, just like the ARDUN guys did with the flathead Fords,
the bottom end won't stand up to the increased rpm and HP.

If you have an inline 8 flathead,I'm sure a couple roots type blowers would wake it up.
