This comes up on most projects[with roofs]....what is a good source for finding a new universal heater unit for my old car?any sources would surely help us all......
What is a heater anyway?
A heater core, which is just a small radiator plumbed ino the engine's cooling system, an electric motor with a fan on it, and a case that looks sorta like a ToastMaster toaster... ?
Yea, you can get fancy with a fresh air intake and some defroster ducts. My truck uses those aluminum flex hoses that go from the exhaust manifold to the airfilter for preheaters, to duct hot air to the defroster.
A vacuum cleaner upholstery attachment works as the under dash defroster outlet, or a reasonable facimile. looks like a flattened funnel.
Hey, a flattened metal funnel might just be the ticket!
My truck has a circa 1940 "Chevrolet Deluxe" heater in it and all it is is as i described above. It sucks air in from around the inside of the cab by the firwall, pushes it out the front of the shell and cooks the passengers shins. A lowrider told me it was worth $300 to guys building "correct" '39-'41 Bombas. I'm keepin it, it came with the truck and because it works...

YES thanks-DrJ- I had thought of buying the components- a new fan /a new core etc....it just makes money sense to get a complete -rather than spending as much on the seperate parts ,then having to build it....[My situation ]is this- I have a complete NEW A/C unit with no heat. I want a seperate unit for the heater so I can use what I have for a cond.....its for my ChevySub project.
also I live in a region where 40 below zero is a reality .....HERE- a heater can save your life.....NOW-ANYONE KNOW OF A SOURCE?
Kenny, not new, but I found a cool heat only unit in mid 80s Toyota PUs.

Summit has one for $80 or so, nice and small. I have a NIB one I'll make somebody a deal on.
Enjenjo, is the heater similar to the ones Big Al's Carponents sells?
About 10" or so square"
I'd be interested.

A guy at NAPA showed me a nice little heater and said it would be about $150.00. It has a lower door and 2 side doors plus two round plastic plugs (one on each side) that looks like you could run defroster duct hose.
Found it on their web site. Retail for $159.
The photo shows it upside down.
