View Full Version : I OPENED UP MY 57 PONCHO REAREND gears question?
I've been sorting through my roadster parts. I'm sending as much stuff as I can to get blasted and making sure the missing parts are either located or on a list in the junk yard to PICK UP SOON...
The gears look great, the ring I counted 41 teeth...
the pinion i didnt count but it looked like 3teeth mesh with the ring.
So not to sound extremely retarded b/c rear ends arent my bag...
would this be a 3:41 gear ratio? thats how I always thought it worked...
I want to take the carrier apart and pull then pinion gear so I can chrome the front along with the housing.. is there anything I should watch out for.
I'm still looking for 57 poncho backing plates... I bought this rear end from a drag racer who needed the 12" breaks. I figured I would find a set somewhere.

Count the # of teeth on the pinion, then divide the # of teeth on the ring gear by that number to find the ratio.

Tuck....on the ring gear, they'll be a buncha numbers stamped. one series will look like this
43:13 but the actual numbers may be different. The small number is the number of teeth on the pinion gear and the big number is the number of teeth on the ring gear. Divide the small number into the big number to get the actual gear ratio. Whatcha got?
this is what i got
the math was 41/12=3.416666666666666666666666666666~
3:41's
the pinion gear was a 12 tooth
cool shit... i learned something this weekend.
I droped the pinion out and bearings etc... and pulled the carrier off with the ring etc etc...
Put em in the partsWASHtub[tm] and cleaned em up.
THe housing is ready to go to the blasters!!
I FORGOT MY CAMERA this weekend so it sucks I cant take any pics.. its pretty cool.
I'm wondering if the bearings are expensive for this stuff. They look good, but wouldnt hurt to replace the axle bearings and some seals! {the easy ones}
this rear end is gonna look SWEET all chrome.
This is way more fun than working on shoebox fords... or galaxies... or any damn car I can think of....

oh yeah
how do these compare to a set of 3:73 gears?
are they lower or higher?

They're higher, so you get less rpm for the same road speed.
You mentioned blasting the rear and chroming the housing. If you mean sand-blasting, it leaves a pretty rough surface that will have to be polished out before it can be chromed. Your polisher may thank you if you bead-blast it instead ?
im doing all the polishing
it needs to be blasted, its got alot of scale.
I'll start polishing with 80, the 180, then 320, then the polishing wheel for that SHOW CHROME look...
thanks for the heads up,
the media blasting doesnt really take the rust out... i just want it SUPER CLEAN and silica is the only way to go.

Keen man http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I just polished some headers I built, then had them chromed. It's not much fun, but it's a good way to save a shitload.

Tuck.....your parts went out UPS today. The man says they'll arrive at your address Wednesday. I just put your name on the package [not the school's name] and the address. Hope it gets to you alright....
