How does the brake attach on a Briggs engine? Does that band just wrap around the clutch and tighten when squeezed? What holds it on?

Help.

Thanks, JH

A band brake usually goes around a brake hub on the rear tire.

Phil...I totally forgot to ask you about this same thing last night.

I saw drum brakes and band brakes at Northern the other day. The band style is a lot cheaper, but how does one connect it??? Does it work using a cable?

Also...I assume the brake would attatch on the side opposite the sprocket? If it's a drum brake...the drum bolts to the wheel, and the shoe assembly floats on the axle?

I have no idea what I'm doing...

You don't need a brake on a minibike. Just point it at a wall, stand up and let go. Like Terry the Toad in American Graffitti. Except he forgot to let go. Rookie mistake. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I've got a suicide/right hand scrub brake on my mini-donorcycle. It's easy. Weld a plate on a rod that attaches to both sides of the frame in front of the rear tire. Attach a shifter-like rod to one side, push or pull the lever and the plate 'scrubs' the rear tire to a stop. Plus, it looks kick-ass. Also, a foot throttle is easy. But that's a different story altogether...Pete

Now that sounds like an option....

KR, I'll try to post some pics tonight. Band brake or drum, neither work that well on the minibikes that i've rode. My band brake is actually on a gokart and it does stop the wheel but with a slick on the back it just keeps going.

I buy my brakes at K-mart. They usually have cheap sneakers in the $6.99 to $9.99 range. They wear out quick, and really only kinda slow you down some...but I've survived every ride thus far with 'em!

I made my own minibike brake using the front drumbrake from an old bicycle.Cut he spokes and drilled out the rivets that hold the drum to the hub. Then I drilled new mounting holes and bolted it to the rear wheel using the sprocket bolts. Works great. Dont have any closeups but here is the bike:

Scrub brake! Simple round rod lever that pushes a steel plate onto the back tire, and a spring to return it when you let off. Works like a champ!

I'm using a bicycle front wheel...would a regular bike caliper style brake on the front be asking for trouble?

I think that is what Barnett and Anti C ran on the Trike O Doom. Just set it up so it does'nt lock up.

The only brake that I have seen work is on Hudson Hawks. Its a scrub brake. He bout one of the little curved scrub peices made for minibikes and has a knobby tire on it. It locked up real good.

I thought about buying one of those for mine but was'nt sure if it would help since I have a slick.

I use #35. Its seems to be more common espesially for small minibikes. I think #41 is a larger heavier chain.

Not at all. I think it would work tits. You would have really good braking power, and it wouldnt be too hard to hook up. I am using the canitlever style brakes from an old mountainbike on the front of my mini. They are on my homemade springer forks. I will try to put up a picture tomorrow.

How about something cool like this to clamp onto your sprocket,

I have a caliper on the rear sprocket didn't work very well until I stoped the oil leak and the pads set it. Now it stops great.
