Seems to me to be pretty presumptuous of you to have people design something for you that they might ordinarily get paid for. Even if it is hot rod related. And why does everything have to have a skull in it? (kinda' unoriginal isn't it?)

03-11-2004, 12:38 AM
Just an idea but you could use an island in the foreground with maybe a palm tree to the side and the skull half buried in the sand with a derelict rowboat in the background. The logo could run in an arc across the top (the word island)and straight across the bottom(rod and custom).

Ok, just my gay 2 cents worth, but as much as I like pin stripping, I think it's a little too much. Especially if you were going to use this on a business card, I think it would get muddy. The design is awesome. I also agree about the skull (over used) but I guess it depends on the clientel you're looking for.

When I see skulls and flames and all that "hip" stuff on a logo I wonder how much of the product line is going to be T shirts, pecker studs, and belt buckles.
For an actual rod-building shop or service garage I would be more attracted to a business with a more subdued yet obviously to the point logo like the one on this old balance slip from a local company.

Don't get me wrong, I love skulls... Been drawing them and playing "pirate" since I was about 3 (even have a pirate tattoo! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif), but leave it out of your logo if you're in it for the long haul. I'd really try to stick with something more relevant, more "to the point".

Although, now that I think of it, that might not work either; I'm a body piercer for a living, and I've had people that were scared to get pierced by me because I had "too many piercings"! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif WTF???

Are you building skulls or are you building hot rods? I just whipped this up quickly, so don't be too critical. For concept only.

If you liked it and wanted to use it to creat the finished artwork, and this goes for anyone/everyone, you should offer some kind of barter. I do it all the time. You need design work: I need welding or parts. Works great.

He's on an island in Canada. We all know if given the chance, EVERYONE would live in CA where there are... palm trees! IMHO, I think Django nailed a long lasting, marketable, and traditional logo. It could be used successfully for store signage, shirt & jackets, decals ect.

Even if it's got the trees or a skull in the grill, that logo says: "Quality Hotrods & Customs built here". 'nuff said.

Fitzee, as others on here have said and you seem to agree, skulls are a bad idea on a business logo.
A couple of young guys in my town started an automotive repair business"Skull Automotive" . They even put their name on the side of a new Blazer. No one took them seriously and they folded in 6 months.
Same thing with a friend of mine.He named his shop "8 ball Auto Repair" with an 8 ball for a logo. He never made it.

I think the design looks pretty good. Maybe switch the flames out for a solid color, medium size bar (rectangle) behind the oval? Maybe in black with everything on a white background...it would give more of an "old style" look, where as the one above is more contemporary. Just a thought.

Fitze: Loose the skull...looks like a shop for Halloween costumes or perhaps a tatoo parlor. Approach you logo this way: If you had to make a small 2 ro 3 inch badge to put on a stunning, just finished project car, what would it look like? I'll bet NOT the skull! (If it is, then I don't want you working on my car!). I don't know why you are avoiding the obvious: Island = Palm Tree. It's a word association thing. If people look at a skull will they think Island Hot Rod? No. If people see a palm tree, will they think Island Hot Rod? Yes.

So rip off a nice single trunk palm tree from the internet, and put a ring around it with the words Island Hot Rod Shop and location. If you have to be weird about it, put some tombstones under the tree!;)

(Unkl Ian has the right idea!! You should send him a check!)

Skulls make for bad logos. You aren't Hot Topic.

Logo I am trying to talk RACEFAB into:

Ryan, If RACEFAB doesnt want that, I'd like to use the basic design idea on the doors of my dodge. cool stuff!

I want to put "chuckles garage" on it.

Incorporate your design in a circle with the logo of an island in the center. Position the name Island over the top of the circle forming a curve, then the words Rod(s)? and Customs in a circular pattern on the bottom of the circle. Many marketing studies established the fact years ago that circles are "eye catchers" and tend to grab the attention of those who see it. I'm sorry I can't post a sketch of this proposal, my computer's in need of a lot of things. Since I sense that you are a fellow irishman, the idea is gratis;...your's for the asking! After all, us "Micks" need to stick together as you have no doubt concluded after reading previous posts on this thread! good luck to you bucko!

Hey Guy...Thats what I do ..design logos. First I ask the customer : mild or wild , contemporary or traditional. Then we have a direction. Next come's Stuff like color ,graphics, things it has to incorporate. Since we already know the name , I ask about slogans, discriptive phrase/e or services rthat are not self discriptive in main name and need to be included. We do a couple of preliminary ideas to norrow things down to go to a final camera ready . I Always make it work in black & white before going crazy with colors. And it should be done as Vector art Not original in digital. Goto www.thelogofactory.com (http://www.thelogofactory.com) for a complete explaination of Vector vs. digital in thier library tutorials. Its the best I've seen . Skulls ??? leave that motif to the bikers. Dino

Skulls are cool, if you're building motorcycles, but a rod shop should have something associated with hot rods in it.

Unkl Ian, I think your design is the winner. It'll look perfect on my Dodge Panel tooling around Padre Island and other parts of South Texas. My son and I are planning the build and have been looking for a logo for the truck. I originally wanted to go back in local history to the 40's and use a name the really existed but Corpus has no hot rod history, that I can find. Got anymore island ideas? My artistic abilities suck so any help is appreciated. Thanks, A.
