View Full Version : Opening a Billetproof can of worms...

Well it's that time again already. Time to start the phone calls, running around, designing, mailing, crying and everything else that is the hell of getting ready for Billetproof, CA.

What can of worms you ask? Well I want people's input about the show. What should be changed, what should be added and what's just fine as it is. Keep in mind that "it's too big" is not valid input without a logical and realistic resolution. I still say there is nothing that says 700 great cars can't be in the same place and still have a great time.

The biggest NEW thing so far for 2004 will be requiring a photo with entry forms. The lame cars have been a VERY small percentage of the total but I'd like to be able to weed out more or all of them before they show up on the doorstep whining about how far they drove.

Can you smell it? It's open.

Thanks in advance for your help and support.

Photo`s with registraition??? sounds complicated???I say just put on a car show there will be critics so what!!! I would like to see some kind of cool off activity it was hot as you get the picture last year.I myself dug the army jeeps and that kid has a nice 31 wide bed should be ready this yr and his Dad has a sweet 34 roadster the total ratio of inapropriate cars to great cars speeks for its self out of 700 cars come on??? I would also like to see some more artist vendors too!!! I love that stuff

I think sending in a photo with entry is a good idea. I have to send in photos of my artwork with my applications to "jury" for shows that I want to do. Weeds out the unacceptable very easily, plus it gives you some good photos to use in your publicity.

Whatever happens, keep the model car contest. That was one of the best ones I have been to in a while. It really brought out a great bunch of people...

I hand paint on ladies clothing and sell at art shows on the weekends I'm not at a car show. I have to send in the application for the show way in advance, including photos of my work so they (the promotors) can determine whether my work is good enough for their show. This is a very common practice in the art show world. Good quality photos, showing your "stuff" in the best possible "light" can make or break whether you get into an AWESOME show or not.

A show might have 500 spaces and 5,000 artist that want to get in. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif They have to choose who gets in some way.

So does a person actually have to show up with the same car they send the picture in of, and get the acceptance and entry for?
You better specify that or people will send in a pic of a car they think is "right" and try to drive in in a different car, and then bitch about how far they drove, yadda yadda.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

How about a "spectator" entrance that's closer to the "spectator" parking... It was hot last year, as has already been pointed out, and I had to walk half way around the perimeter of the fair grounds to even get through the gate...

I loved the 'live customising' competition. Every time my friend & I walked past, we checked it out to see how far the guys had got. Who needs Monster Garage's 5 days!!

The whole feel of the show, was in my humble opinion, just right, I really enjoyed seeing people actually wandering round checking out cars etc, made a change from all the other (sit in the lawnchair) shows I had been to in 2003 (apart from Paso!) I have only lived here in CA for 15 months, but BILLETPROOF was on the calender almost from the day I arrived, and will stay that way for a long time to come.

The music was a nice little distraction as well, how about a varied line up?

The Choptops? or Hopped Up!! would be cool.

Just my $0.02 worth.

But whatever you do...I'll be there!!

Can we do an online registration, and send a pic as an attachment that way? Also I'm torn between taking my 59 (yet again...) or bringing the beater 55 Chevy truck that I plan to throw together...

just put gary minor at the front gate, he said he would do it, you won't have half the cars you did last year, but what will be inside will be pretty cool ones, but then again, i think you would have a lot of pissed off people!...whatever happens, we will be there, do we have to send a pic if you already know the car??? just kidding, i think i have one........chip

ScaryLarry is using a two parking area idea for his show. The "traditional vehicles" will be in the preferred area and the "marginal" ones parked elsewhere. Late models and Street Rods will be turned away and if they don't like it, Oh Well!..........

DUDE!

Don't be chicken, its you're show, do what the hell you want. Hell, make it GAYPRIDEPROOF '04 if you want... might lose some attendance tho. Do your thing as you see fit, its a freakin car show, not religeon.

Billetproof will be Billetproof. There won't be any major changes. The formula is pretty solid. I just want the show to stay current and offer something new for people who go.

Kirk, how about FREE BEER? j/k

I went last year and the only other year I went was `99 (due to work) and I thought that it had stayed true to form, but got alot better due to the larger venue and the major increase in number of cars. I do think online registation would make things easier on some.

ok if no free beer, how about Laidies free at the gate and $10 for guys?

Last year kicked butt.

Maybe have a special section for the cars that aren't "billetproof" type cars... "just go down there and turn left at the gate..."

Park them behind a wall or something?

Anyway, it's not like the show was crawling with them... so because the percentages are so low... I say screw it... keep the show "as is".

The ONLY thing I didn't care for was the group of guys that turned that car into a hot tub... that was stupid. Maybe if you're going to have a customizing competition... have the contestants submit their plans to you first... so you don't end up with a totally useless car.

Also, maybe have a "Motor Meltdown" competition... as a HAMB fundraiser maybe? I think I may try to have another Saturday night party... maybe do it then?

I know we talked about this last year... but at the time I was ass deep in work and didn't have the time.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Sam.

I still think that would be KILLER. I'd love to see it during the day at the show. Great attraction and it would raise money.

The offer still stands to clubs out there who want to earn money for their kitty or for a charity to get a FREE booth. The rule is that you cannot sell anything and must have an activity. It can be like a carnival booth or wheel changing competition where the customer pays a fee to try to be the days fastest. The winner of the day gets half the dough or a cool prize. Something like that. The booth idea would have to be approved in advance. It just gives people more to see and do while earning clubs some dough for a club project or something.

Hmmmm...
I really do like the "HAMB parking" idea-
I say someone should DONATE HAMB stickers for the occasion-
You know, stickers you ONLY get if you're a HAMBer and were at Billetproof 04

I would like to see more bikes this year too...?
But maybe that's just me-
(I was thinking maybe the cut-off year could be DIFFERENT for bikes to get more in?)

A HAMB / Billetproof sticker would be cool. Billetproof could even cover the cost. It needs to be OK'd with Ryan and designed. If someone gets serious about this project I'll get specs for it.

My ideas...

-a car parts swap meet area...

-NO gay billet wheels etc. on cars PERIOD...
(stay true to the name..!!)

-Online reg. would be awesome...easier..??

-Giant tents for the cars to park under in the field area
would be neat...shade was KEY last year...too damn hot..!!

I'm sure I'll think of something else...

Later, Snacks...

We had online reg last year and it was a huge success. It will happen again this year. I'll definitely look into the tent idea. We talked a little about it last year but never got around to checking into it. The swap area is something I really want to do but I don't know where to do it. The whole grounds will be packed as will the spectator parking. Suggestions?

wasn't there the covered areas to the left of the car
'building' area..?? behind a short chain link fence..??
kind of like at Turlock..??

or maybe the area to the left of where the bands played..?
that seemed like a cool little area that could be
designated for just swapping... couple of rows..?

I honestly don't remember the layout of the fairgrounds that well...
I was drinking a little bit last year... Hahahaha..!!!

KIRK!

Yeah, that far back area would be cool if we can get it. It's covered and cool.

The only negative about last year was sweating like pigs!

Definitely something to add shade to the big field area would be a good move - I really felt sorry for the poor bastards stuck out there.

How about a spot somewhere with those mist sprayers for when you reach critical meltdown?

Too wus for Billetproof? How about PBR misters?

How about the races on the track run during the show instead of at night so more "fans" could see them. Also a parts swap meet would be cool.

More beer vendors or the free beer sounds good!

How about a special area for HAMB guys and gals and then have the Motor Meltdown there? $5 a ticket, winner gets half the pot? The HAMB gets the other half?

i can't suggest any changes for your show. bitchin. i can, however, tell you what i'll do differently and advise others to do. get there early and plan on the entire weekend. we drove down friday night 4 hours away. got to downtown as the cats were crawlin home. woke up, hit the show all day long. hung out until awards and split, 4 hours away. had to work in the morn. would have loved to hang for the races and been able to hang the nite b'fore. get her planned kirk, i'm anxiously waiting. we'll bring the new surprise if done, if not will bring the truck.

oh, online reg was flawless lastyear.

oh oh, stay true. if it's got billet, stay home. i had some doner/loner billet on the engine that i ditched just in the nick last year. i wasn't about to have billet on my ride. i was spectin serious hazing for the clowns that had it. none here.

First off I wanna say the show kicked ass, so with that said here's my suggestion....
FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD more more more FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD
God, me and the old man had to walk out the gate about a mile total in that heat to go eat at a corner deli cause http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gifthe damn food vendors closed up. The people workin the deli were full on Twilight Zone family to top it off! This years
show needs lots more...ALL DAY food and beverage vendors.

03-11-2004, 07:48 PM
oh another idea......
those plastic "Buddy L" rocket cars you had in your garage, man it would be fun to race those for some cash. have dudes bring in toy hotrods and race them powered by estes rockets or something....i dunno, maybe that would be better left for home entertainment when drinking.....

Nimrod
03-11-2004, 07:50 PM
Yeh..... I remember. I was joking (half joking).
It was the highlight of the show I thought. It is too bad that was the last of Livermore, I liked the Rodeo Park. It was nice and dusty, had a good feel to it.

"Hot Rod" shows need something besides parking and looking at all the pretty cars (even if thats why they call it a SHOW).
More activities. I like the swap meet idea.

Wicked Death Chop
03-12-2004, 05:18 AM
it would be cool to organize some sort of cruise. not in the show, but maybe the night before, or after the show, or something. maybe a premeditated destination.......some parking lot to overrun??!!!?? inject some of that 'punk rock' feel.

i don't know how to make it work, BUT it would be cool if it could be pulled off somehow. i just love seeing the cars in action!! probably why paso is my favorite event, all the cruising and action going on.

cars in motion...........just a thought.

Farmer
03-12-2004, 09:11 AM
cruise would be cool for sure.....there are alot of hotrods at Billetproof that I would like to have heard loping around

Just got back from Famoso. Freakin' hot and tons of racing. Over 500 race cars alone. Anyway....

Last year we couldn't "Officially" cruise because we were invading the town for the first time. I really want to have a cruise this year down where we hung out Friday night last year. I will be working on getting a permit to close the road so we can see the heaps moving. No guarantees on that yet though.

Also looking into more bands in the hall across from the bar too. It would be GREAT to have a club do the Friday night band gig. Thay can set it up and charge a small admission to pay the bands. That would be a HUGE help and let more people get more involved.

purple
03-18-2004, 02:12 AM
I think the pic idea is alright, but most cars last year were right on so I don't think it matters much that you "out" the billet rides. I like the small swap idea, we can squeeze it in somewhere no problem. Hot? It was cooler there than here, didn't bother me much. Keep the model car contest, I might acually finish a kit and not bring 10+ year old stuff. Keep the bikes year cutoff the same, there should be more bikes there with word of mouth, tell a friend! Get the OK to have an additional food/beverage vendor there, I'm sure you can get a roach coach to show up no problem. I was going to agree on a HAMB area, but there so many of us. HAMB/BP'04 stickers would work, we'll be everywhere. A Sam's motor meltdown again would be great, it was so much fun the first time. A small area set off for that would need to be safely picked, try not to be near any fire hazard ya know. We want to come back. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
