View Full Version : super secret hamb thrash?

I haven't done a one day thrash on a car in a LONG time. Anybody wanna do a HAMB thrash?....Here's my thoughts....Denise wants a change on "Big Olds" and I think a one day bump and paint would be mucho fun. I know we have the talent, and one day with a gang of punks with sandpaper and bondo would be possible. We would need some materials, and that is the hard part. I have some leftovers from other jobs and I'm sure there are others that could "kick in" stuff too. Maybe someone with connections in the industry could pull in a favor or two.
I've got a couple of weekends free in April and a saturday "Bondo Barbecue" is what I'm thinkin. Last time I did one, we decided that at 6p.m. "We Paint"
Anybody got a shop we could invade for a day?...(that is, if Denise thinks it's an OK idea).......how about some thoughts on this?

If it's a little later (drier) we can move things outside and use my place to do the damage. While the destruction is taking place Denise can train my wife on how to do the picture posting thing. We wouldn't want any "WIMMIN" in the way would we? I've got a good size grille and we could do the barbeque on the deck. Like I said it will have to be after Lake Burrell dries up.

Some artwork ...scallops maybe... would be cool if we have the time. If we do basecoat with no clear, it's possible....no sense doing it unless we can end up with a killer job to show off. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Where exactly is this gonna happen?
Finally something that I can join in and is somewhat close AND a weekend with nothing to do!.
Chances of that happening again are slim so I'm jumpin' in on this one!!!!
I can wet sand like a motherhumper...as long as the women don't mind seeing a fat man in a wet T contest!
Ya see the key is to use a squirt bottle (with a little soap in the water) in the left hand, sanding block wrapped in paper in the right hand and a full sheet of paper stuck to the belly http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif This way I can block out the flat areas and get those big round curves of big Olds done at the same time http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Of course we all know it's time to go home when it looks like the fat man is trying to smack a couple of kiwi in a wet paper bag against the side of the car http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif....and being the fat guy I can't see what the hell's going on and the last to know! This "Thrash" sounds great! I would love to attend and sand and drink beer! I'm not 100% sure yet.
When I was at the Detroit Autorama, I had a talk with Denise about pinstriping Big Olds at BilletProof. Although nothing was cast in stone, she was mighty excited. I took this seriously and the prospect of a straight flattened copper color is what I feel she really wants. Maybe with some striping. So I don't know about scallops, yet.

Ya know what I mean. Anyway this whole thing looks like a great oppurtunity to have fun and help out a Hamb'er.

i think that hanging out with all the "gay bitches" is reason enough to count me in...let alone getting to defile big olds. i can't wait.
speaking of scallops, we're laying out the scallops on my shoebox tomorrow night and i'm planning a scallop TECH!!!!!
i'm no pro, but it should be interesting viewing atleast.
p.p.of chicago and safariknut, this could be a good opportunity to do some hamber co-op striping...whether it be on big olds or on little do-dads. we could have people bring items with them that they would like to see pinstriped, and for a nominal fee (which would help denise offset some of the cost of supplies needed for big olds)we could stripe them. just an idea....

Denise, If you're going with the copper, I have a sheet of light bronze colored glass that would look great, I have patterns for all the side glass... BUT if you're going with Power windows I usually have to add 1 1/2 inches to the bottom and I would need a pattern of the rear window unless you have a stock olds frame. also need a shipping address and I doubt if my schedule would allow me to get it there in time for the thrash, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif it sound like you'll have enough thing happin' without worrying about glass problems http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well I just hired security for the day. Everyone must show ID to get into the shop and NO ONE from the Flint area will be allowed inside, or anywhere near Big Olds. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The Flint boys will be assigned food prep, BBQing and serving duties, OUTSIDE http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Seriously though, the response here is alittle overwhelming. Alot of the ideas I've been thinking about regarding Big Olds are going to become a reality and I know I couldn't do it without help. My good buddies from the HAMB type of help.
Roadstars going to make a list of materials that he thinks will be needed and we'll post that. He's also going to check his cost for some of the stuff. I'll take a few photos of a couple of things on Big Olds that need attention and we can kind of brainstorm beforehand.
Fab32, I'd like to come up on a Sat and help you do whatever is neccessary to make room. Maybe I'll join you guys on Sat the 20th for breakfast and we can talk about things and make sure we're all on the same page with realistic goals for the day. hotrodladycrusr

Yes they would as a matter of fact. I talked to Red Shoes at the Autorama about me writing up something for the mag about what my plans were for the continued buildup of "Project Big Olds". He thought it was a good idea. Wait till he gets the recent scoop and some of the things that him and I talked about are getting done NOW! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Tim at Rod and Custom also mentioned to me, shortly after I purchased Big Olds, to contact him when I "finished" him. I'm going to make sure he knows this is going down as well.

At last count it looks like about 40-50 are going to show up. That being the case I'll provide valet parking for $25 for the day and I'll make enough to get my old tired '32 back on the road for the summer. I sold one of the '32 bodies and am in the closing details for the other one. To hell with the stock market I smell the retirement fund nearing it's goal. I don't know, retiring with only 7 projects does sound a little risky. What am I going to do after I reach 110? DENISE. do me a favor. measure your hood down the middle from the cowl to the grill following the shape so i know how long to make the piece for the "peak". if i fab that part ahead of time we should be able to finishe the rest of it in one day. i think it's gonna be a LOOOOONG day too with all the work that is planned.
hatch
03-14-2004, 02:39 PM
A peaked hood would be great....how much prelim can ya get done on it?...I know it would be tough to get through the hood transformation in one day, but if the welding was done without much distortion, the rest would be easy.
If we can get any "heavy fabrication" done before "paintday" we shouldn't have any problem getting it completed in one day. By heavy fab, I mean things like panel fit or the hood peak...small stuff concerned with welding shouldn't slow us down too much..small stuff like filling door handles, etc.
If we plan on shooting the paint around 4pm, that would give some dry time...(dinner break)...and then some striping for dessert....this way, everyone involved gets to see the finished product and get home before 4 in the morning.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The front of the hood needs modifications so it meets the top of the grill properly. I talked to a guy last summer that had just done a 47 Olds and aked him how he got the hood to fix so perfectly in the front and he shared with me that he actually welded a piece of rod at the bottom edge. I'll be able to explain better on Saturday

Just in case anyone is still following this, tonight after work I sprayed PB Blaster on the 9 bolts that hold the hood onto the main support. They were all pretty rusty. Let them soak a short while. Then when Roadstar got here I racheted them off pretty easily. I was surprised on how light the hood was for being as big as it is. It's ready to throw in the truck on Saturday morning.
Big Olds looks even MORE like an honest to goodness hot rod with no hood and that kick ass BB sticking up for all to see. Only on the HAMB would we get a blow by blow account of hauling an old Olds hood. AND... Eagerly awaiting updates! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just to report that Cherry Blossom (the dear thing) left with the hood in her PU after the HAMB breakfast. The hood was handled very gently by the attending HAMB crew and I'm sure it's almost back to Charlotte (sp) as we speak. Denise seemed to to take the departure well (its a strategic part of her beloved BIG OLDS) and a few hugs and a couple of Kleenex helped her regain her composure. She will be reunited with the wayward body part at the SSHT at my place in a couple of weeks. Mike (kustombuilder), the ball is in your court, do a good job for our HRLC.

Kustombuilder, I've got stick/arc, mig (two machines one 220 and one 110), tig, and oxy/acc. with a conventional Victor torch and tips or a Henrob outfit. Is there anything else you need? Oh! I forgot I also have a new bottle of Elmers glue and a scotch tape dispenser.

Everyone knows that all you need are some pop-rivets for the hood scoop. I will bring the JBweld just in case. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
