Well Luke, here's a guy with a 1950 Merc tailgate. Not sure how different the script is, but it may fit your box. I'm just passing on the ph # from an ad in "Old Autos".

"1950 Mercury tailgate- $100 (Can= approx $66US) Ph Rob (519) 633-8929, St. Thomas, Ontario" (Think, two hours northwest of Detroit).

If you phone, the guy'll be surprised by a phone call from Calif.
Being a thinly populated country, we've only got a few print outlets for old car stuff. The biggest is a (twice monthly) newspaper called Old Autos. You amost GOTTA subscribe to it up here, if you're looking for old cars/parts.

Thanks guys, Fordnutz, is it true that you have lots of stuff? Would any of your stuff be a tailgate for a 53-56 Mercury truck? Would you like to sell it? I'm gonna check the measurements and see if the 50 gate will fit too!

Luke, don't have tailgate for a 56 Merc rite now. They go pretty fast if they are any good. The swap meets are starting up here at the end of the month so will keep an eye open. I usually pick up any good ones. This is pickup country. I don't know if 50 will work on 56. I know 51 and 52 are different than 48-50 in the design on them, but I think they will interchange. With the cab design change in 53 I don't know if they changed the boxes. Some ford pickup guy on here should know. The Merc is the same box, just a different gate. Pat

Yeah, there's a swap meet up here too, early in October. Will keep my eyes open.

God, I had one about two months ago.... chopped out the Merc insert and welded a louvred one in!
Got a buddy who had a couple, I'll ask if he still has 'em and let ya know. And yes, they are different gates on M-1's and M-100's. <font color="black"> </font>
