View Full Version : OT Tech... fabricating a metal bra for my GF... PICS

autocol

yeah, it's off topic, but it involves cutting, bending and welding metal, AND tits, so i figured you guys would be up for it!

my girlfriend and i are going to a party this week with a horror theme, and she's getting fully bodypainted to look like she's half girl, half machine... so i'm making a full metal bra and skirt to hide her 'bits'.

here we go...

first, the ubiquitous paper template:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra01.jpg

next, we have the components cut out, and me bashing them to shape:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra02.jpg

here's two of the parts taking shape:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra03.jpg

then we tack:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra04.jpg

then we seam weld (yes, i'm a shitty welder... bite me):
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra05.jpg

this is one side ground back and crudely polished, and attached to the breast it will finally call home http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif :
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra06.jpg

here's the nearly completed article:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra07.jpg

and here it is attached to my girl:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/cfink/metalwork/bra08.jpg

it's not quite finished (it got too late for grinding, my neighbours would'a been eating dinner), but it's close, and it should be pretty funny...

anyway, sorry for the OT post, but hey, i reckon yall will like it more than minibikes! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif i'll post again tomorrow with the finished product.

guage? um, dunno, but it's about 20 i'd guess... i'm just using some scrap i had around...

i knocked it together in about two-three hours, but it still has a couple of hours to go before it's done...

it was really all just a ploy to get her gear off! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif (you'd think having been together for nearly a year i wouldn't have to stoop to such lows, but hey http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )

Nice job! If there is a next time, you might try doing each breast from one piece. All you need is a ballpeen hammer, and a small leather shot dolly, or purse tightly packed with sand to pound into. Pretty easy to get the shape you want this way. And you can smooth the lumps out with a pair of modified swivel pad vice grips. I'll tell you how it works if you are interested. I'm doing a video for metalshaping, and this is one of the tricks I'll be putting in it. You could go into the breast guard business!

He could but for the robot costume i think the welded look is TITS.

Hey john let me know when the video is out i am definatly intrested.

Actually, the longer you are together, the trickier you have to be to get the gear off! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi Garth,

Email me at: ghiafab@msn.com to get on the "to notify " list for the video. Glad you are interested!

Autocol, The trick is if you have sheetmetal with lots of small lumps, first smooth with a hanmmer and dolly with lots of on-dolly work, not worrying about over-stretching, then use a pair of modified swivel-pad vice grips, either vise mounted or by hand to slide back and forth over the metal under pressure. Use WD-40 for a lubricant. The modification to the vice grips is to simply pound and grind a compound curve in the upper and lower swivel pads. This allows you to use it as a poor man's english wheel. It will help smooth and polish the metal. Then bump up low spots and maybe hammer and dolly some more...then a shrinking disc to reduce the slightly high area created by all the hammer and dolly work. Knowing that you can over-stretch, then shrink back down frees you up to do shaping without the concern of going too far. The vice grip method works really well over small bumps created by stretching with a ballpeen hammer into a shot bag, or shot dolly.

I've attached as picture of a fender flare done this way.

cool... i think i get the idea... thanks very much, i'll try that soon. i've never tried to get anywhere NEAR that much deformation in a compound curve in a single sheet, which is why, for this project, i resorted to slices of pie, welded together...

say, is that car a triumph?

oh, and guys, some of the cracks in this thread (particularly the one about tinsnips) are hilarious!... i love this place...

Yeah Great! Go and give the rest of us Aussies a bad name. I've been with my wife for 7 years and married almost 3. I've got no problems getting her gear off!

But then again... I don't have your metalforming skills either... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Hi Autocol,

It's a Porsche 914. Here is a picture of the whole car (unfinished).

i've never seen or heard of a 914 before. my dad had a 924 turbo (which has sat and rotted since he died) and a friend has a 944 in immaculate nick, but that's the first i've ever seen of a 914...

don't worry brootal, i was only kidding... in reality i have to fight her off with a stick, and just last night i had to tell her that her seven friends could NOT join us... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

okay, so i finished the bra and the steel skirt to match, it was night time so the photo's aren't fantastic, but wait till i add the body painting part! (which of course is going to be included!)

Did you line the bra with fabric? I would think that might be a bit cold.

The 914 is a great little car on the cheap...mid-engine 4 wheel disc brakes, room for bigger engines etc. I was once in one that did a 110 mph just after it shifted into 3rd gear (5 speed). It had a flat 6 911 engine that was hopped up. Scary fast. V8 conversions, Buick V6 conversions etc.

People really like the 914 for autocrossing. They can be set up to out perform much more expensive/exotic cars. The car in the picture I posted is raced in autocross, and has a 4 cylinder 2.1 litre engine with webers. It is healthy, but Porsche flat six is in the works. Maybe it needs a steel bra for that ugly gash in the hood?

Yes they were badged as VWs in Europe.

Garth, I sent a reply to your email and it bounced. Is your inbox full?

In Europe, 914s were badged both ways... 4 cyl were VWs and 6 cyl. were Porsches.

just got back from the ball... what a blast, i got thoroughly tanked without spending a cent!

unfortunately i left my camera at my bro's house so you'll have to wait till tomorrow to see the final pics (as will i)... there's some funny shit.

econoporsche? here we call it the 'poormansporsche'... dad's one was dented on every fender, and came from the old school of turboing where you had nothing down low and it all came in a rush like a two-stroke into band when the turbo spooled up. i nearly crashed it in the wet once when the revs climbed over three grand up a hill and she just lit the back up...

yeah, i lined the bra with fabric, and around the rim it's got rubber tube slit open and glued with epoxy so she didn't get stabbed to death as she danced... the dress was a bit of a danger when the butt got movin' though! i could have been castrated!

final shots tomorrow. i think my brother must have taken out the stupidest costume prize, but i was a CLOSE second!

guesses as to what my outfit was meant to be ranged from bowser, from mario-kart, to a WWF wrestler of some description (can't remember which one), or a power ranger... most people refused to believe that i just made it up, and in particular, that i made it myself, even though it was unfinished and you could peel back various bits fo material to expose the foam of the mattress that i made it out of...

my brother also makes dumb shit, and here's his effort... he's a jockey riding an emu... two other friends had identical costumes so they spent all night having emu races around the ball!

Hi Bruce,

I've heard those called fender rollers. They have less contact area than my "smoothing clamp", but are probably easier to use. The modern one posted on that thread looks interesting too. I was going to make one before I came up with the smoothing clamp.
